Portia, a bright figure in The Merchant of Venice, was considered a symbol of uprising woman in Shakespeare's plays in which she represents a new type of woman in the Renaissance period. However, she is suppressed by the prevalent male-dominated discourse in many respects at that time: as a rich daughter, a devoted lover, a faithful wife and a renowned lawyer. To top it off, she is not aware of this suppression, and is unconsciously content with the subordinate position, showing no disagreement with it. Therefore, her subversion of the prevalent discourse is in fact quite limited and weak and beneath the permission of the mainstream authority.
