5月18日晚,中国驻法国大使吴建民在使馆文化处举办的招待会上,为前来参加第四十七届世界乒乓球锦标赛的中国乒乓球代表团打气。大使明白在国内非典疫情尚未解除的时候,乒乓球队此次出征是做了充分准备的,而且法方的态度一直很积极,但是,他仍要讲几句鼓励球员们努力打出水平的话。国人关注国球,本来顺理成章,况且中国的外交官员对乒乓球有着非常特殊的感情。一个星期过去,驻法使馆再次举行招待会,这回是庆功会了。吴建民向乒乓球队和李富荣,徐寅生等老国手道喜,有意无意地说:“祝贺中国乒乓球队这一次拿了4项冠军,只差一个男子单刀。不过也好,要是全拿了,人家会说我们在乒乓球方面是超级大国了。”
