Giuseppe Castiglone(Chinese name Lang Shining,1688-1766)and Ferdinand Augustin Haller von Hallerstein(Chinese name Liu Songling,1703-1774),two Jesuits missionaries at the Chinese court in the eighteenth century, exerted considerable influence on the Chinese Qianlong Emperor(r.1736-1795).While the celebrated Milanese painter and missionary Castiglione was Qianlong’s favourite painter,a Slovenian Jesuit Hallerstein, impressed him with his advanced scientific knowledge, and was appointed Head of the Imperial Board of Astronomy in 1747,a position he would maintain until his death nearly 30 years later. In contrast to Castiglione, who has already been the subject of numerous studies and articles in both the West and China, due to historical circumstances Hallerstein’s achievements at the Qianlong court have been overlooked or forgotten for more than 200 years. His work and life became a focus of new research in Slovenia and China in the last three decades, thus his numerous letters have only recently been collected and edited.Hallerstein`s recently rediscovered letters offer fresh insight into the life and art of the celebrated painter Castiglione. They provide important new evidence concerning not only Castiglione’s career, but also his position at the court and within the Jesuit community in Beijing. The present paper will thus focus on Hallerstein’s letters and his references to Castiglione`s art.It will explore Hallerstein’s views on Castiglione and his art and will conclude with new evidence concerning Castiglione’s artistic achievements.
