This study picks up the places where jixi(缉熙)or its equivalent is quoted in the recently excavated Chu bamboo slips from Guodian and the Shanghai Museum Bamboo Scrolls Vol.1.and analyzes its meaning. The meaning of jixi in these artifacts can be thought to be different from its meaning in the classic anthology Mao-shi(毛诗).Jixi as written in the actual text of Mao-zhuan(毛传)was annotated as"glorious light",and since Zheng-jian(郑笺)was annotated as"respect the glorious light from the king’s virtue"(又能敬其光明之德),excluding Zhu-zi(朱子),the approximate meaning of jixi can be understood to be"light".However, according to Dr.Li Jiahao’s(李家浩)revision, the old character for jixi(■■)in the excavated texts,at the very least, reveals that jixi in the pre-Qin Dynasty could be interpreted as"inheriting and spreading".
