二语形态问题成因之谜——对不同语言水平、不同母语背景二语学习者的实证研究

Revisiting second language morphological problem: An empirical study on learners of various proficiencies and different L1 backgrounds

摘要 二语形态问题是指二语学习者在习得和处理特定二语形态结构方面的困难。二语形态问题对成人二语学习者来说是个普遍现象,往往持续相当长的时间,甚至变成一种石化现象,即使高级的学习者也难以避免。关于问题的成因目前二语学界存在争议,从认知视角看,主流的观点有四种,分别为认知突显说、母语影响说、资源缺乏说和语言能力缺陷说。为了检验以上观点,本文选取12种有代表性的英语形态-句法结构作为研究对象,采用限时语法判断的研究范式,对不同语言水平、不同母语背景的二语学习者进行对比研究。研究结果支持能力缺陷说,学习者语言能力缺陷是造成二语形态问题的主要原因;认知突显说、母语影响说和资源缺乏说都无法完全解释二语形态问题的成因。 Second language morphological problem refers to the difficulty that second language learners encounter when they acquire and process certain second language morphological structures.Morphological problems is a common phenomenon among adult second learners,often lasting for a long time and sometimes evolving into a fossilized endstate that even highly proficient learners areincapable of avoiding.Although the causes of second language morphological problem remain controversial,there are four mainstream viewpoints among researchers of second language acquisition,i.e.,cognitive prominence of forms,influence of L1,lack of cognitive resources,and deficit of competence.To test the plausibility of the above views,this paper selects 12 typical English morphosyntactic structures as the object of study and adopts the paradigm of timed grammaticality judgment test to compare learners of various proficiencies from different L1 backgrounds.Results of the study show that second language morphological problem is mainly caused by learners’competence,whereas cognitive prominence of forms,influence of L1 and lack of cognitive resources all fail to fully account for the problem.
