Cold is a common exogenous disease caused by wind evil invading the surface. Its core mechanism is that pathogens invade the mucosal barrier to produce mucosal immune response. The mucosal immune system plays an important role in the initial stage of infection.Academician TONG Xiaolin believes that there are roughly three reasons for the onset of a cold:Taiyang,Wei phase and gastrointestinal tract, all of which belong to the exterior syndrome(the syndrome in the initial stage of exogenous disease is relative to the“internal syndrome”),so he puts forward the theory of mucosal exogenous disease.Specifically, the skin mucosal exogenous disease corresponds to the exterior of Taiyang. The exterior of Wei phase corresponding to respiratory mucosal exogenous diseases. The exterior of gastrointestinal tract corresponding to mucosal extravasation of digestive tract.Sanbiao Decoction(三表汤)is a basic prescription formulated by academician TONG Xiaolin for all kinds of common cold.It consists of Gegen(Radix Puerariae Lobatae),Mahuang(Herba Ephedrae),Guizhi(Ramulus Cinnamomi),Jinyinhua(Flos Lonicerae Japonicae),Jiegeng(Radix Platycodonis),Huoxiang(Herba Pogostemonis)and Gaocao(Radix Et Rhizoma Glycyrrhizae). The prescription covers the basic medication of cold diseases, which can be used as a basic prescription for various kinds of common cold as well as a preventative prescription for influenza.
