Viewing the modern Japanese literature in its entirety,we would find the private-individual-oriented novels(or literature)is the most marked and the greatest characteristic of it.In Japan,it is with the private-individual-oriented literature as the key, that the modern literature opened the door of the“modernization of literature”,and the mainstream of modern Japanese literature is none but private-individual-oriented literature. In fact,so-called“the awakening of modern ego”,one of the most important theme of modern Japanese literature,is precisely nothing but the awakening of being private individual.Meanwhile, the fact means the retreat of delusion that existed from ancient times to the present of being public person(or sociality). This paper makes a new attempt to decipher the modern Japanese literature with two concepts:public-affair-oriented literature and private-individual-oriented literature, and shows a specific example of text analysis by using Sensei no Kaban, which means“the bag of my teacher”,a novel written by Hiromi Kawakami.
