Oba Minako(1930-2007)was a Japanese postwar female writer who had lived in Alaska for more than 10 years. She had deep insights into the ethnic problems in American society. The background of The Seashore of Totem is just before the Osaka World Expo in 1970,and the American government issued an order that the Tredgett tribe of Indians should exhibit unique totem poles of its own at this Expo.Under the circumstance of the increasingly intimate Japan-US relationship and the grand and noble slogan of“the progress and harmony of mankind”of the Osaka World Expo, the writer used the totem poles of the Indian minority as the breakthrough point, providing the mythological narration of the characters with three different identities and cultural backgrounds, and depicted the multiple survival dilemma faced by American ethnic minorities, which had tremendous ironic significance. The mythological narration of the characters of various stands in the novel revealed the hidden ecological viewpoints in the narrator's mind. The study of the ecological view points and ethical expression can clearly outline the valuable courage in exposing the contemporary minorities’survival problems and the justice in criticizing the overwhelming cultures'oppression and nibbling over the weak cultures.
