Irish writer James Joyce in his collection of short stories The Dubliners describes the decayed spiritual status of the Dubliners when they were British colonial rule in the 19th century. The writer clearly realizes that the spiritual crisis of the Irish people is closely related to their vague identity concept. What’s more pitiful is that their vague identity concept was admitted and even encouraged by the British authorities, and they became the Others on their own land.To probe into the issue of identity, and to know the criticism on the identity concept of the Irish people under the cultural colonization and the colonial policy of the British empire is a key dimension to understand the Joyce’s works.
