李唐皇室尊奉老子爲先祖玄元皇帝,故道教亦被奉爲唐國教,其中又尤以外丹之方術爲皇帝所重,他們委派道士煉合丹藥,以期長生。到了開元末年,玄宗在位既久,海内昇平,他自然也滋生了這樣的想法,於是一系列所謂符瑞、神異便在當時頻繁出現,改元"天寶"亦是這種氛圍下的産物。位於中岳嵩山的嵩陽觀,因爲"直天中晷影之正",被視爲絕佳的吸收天地陰陽靈氣的寶地.
The Songyang Taoist Temple’s Monument to Emperor(Datang Songyangguan Ji Shengdeganying Zhi Song《大唐嵩陽觀紀聖德感應之頌》)in Henan Province has been a famous monument.The content of the inscription was created by the Grand Councilor(zaixiang宰相)Li Linfu李林甫,and it was copied with official script(lishu隸書)by the famous calligrapher Xu Hao徐浩.Pei Jiong(裴迥),the Chief Administrator of Henan prefecture(Henan yin河南尹),wrote the monument’s headline with seal character(zhuanshu篆書).This inscription records the historical event that a Taoist priest named Sun Taichong孫太冲successfully refined elixir for emperor Xuanzong玄宗皇帝in Songyang Taoist Temple嵩陽觀,and it simultaneously praised the emperor’s wisdom and morality.Despite at the end of the inscription indicated the monument was established on the fifth day of the second lunar month of744,its completion time should be reconfirmed by comparing and clarifying the time when Li Linfu,Pei Jiong and Xu Hao were holding their respective positions.According to historical documents and unearthed epitaphs,the Chief Administrator of Henan was Pei Dunfu(裴敦復)in 744.Pei Jiong had held this post since 750,and his retirement couldn’t be later than the sixth lunar month of 755.Xu Hao was the Deputy Director of Treasury Bureau(jinbu yuanwailang金部員外郎)when he copied the inscription.Several sources show that his Deputy Director began after the first lunar month of 750.Therefore Xu Hao could not engage in this activity in 744 as the Songyang inscription shows.According to the inscription,Grand Councilor Li Linfu had a prestige title(sanguan散官)of“Commander Unequalled in Honor"(kaifu yitongsannsi開府儀同三司),but his biography in Tang’s official archives shows that Li’s getting the title was actually in 749.Li Linfu’s other position,the Military Commissioner of Shuofang(Shuofang jiedushi朔方節度使),was appointed in the first lunar month of 751.But he was the vice-commissioner when he created
