Despite improvements to accommodate larger ships,North American ports are still under pressure from crowded yards, chassis shortages and a lack of skilled equipment operators,a problem exacerbated by unprecedented imports since last fall.In the first 10 months of 2020,according to PIERS,17.5 per cent of berthing vessels in the US West Coast ports handled between 10,000 and 15,000 TEUs.This is up from 1.1 per cent in 2010,8.6 per cent in 2014 and 16.5 per cent in 2018.In the US East Coast ports,15 percent of the ship capacity in the first 10 months of 2020 is 10,000 TEU or more.Lars Jensen,CEO and partner of Sea Intelligence Consulting and an analyst at JOC,said the workforce will continue to be between 12,000 and 14,000 TEU on the trans-Pacific eastbound route. However,US port facilities, particularly at the ports of Los Angeles,Long Beach and New York-New Jersey, are under pressure because of unprecedented volumes of imported containers, even for ships of this size.
