摘要
五四传统的精神实质并不是表层的“民主与科学” ,而是深层的民族主义和自由主义。“五四”自由主义既脱离当时的现实 ,又脱离中国的传统。就其严重脱离传统而言 ,中国自由主义与西方自由主义是截然不同的 ,这是他们迄今为止总是失败的一个重要原因。西方自由主义乃是与其“二希”(古希腊、希伯莱 )传统对接的。中国文化传统亦自有其自由精神 。
The spirits or essences of the May 4th in 1919 is not ‘Democracy and Science' on the surface, but nationalism and liberalism below the surface. The May 4th liberalism divorced itself from both the realities at that time and Chinese tradition. Considering the grave divorce from the tradition, Chinese liberalism is quite different from the Western one, which is an important cause that they have been doomed to fail so far. The liberalism in the West is docked in their tradition of both the Geek and the Hebrew. However, Chinese cultural tradition has the liberty spirits of its own yet. The only question for us is how to transform the liberty tradition of our own into modernization.
