It is interesting to note that the total number of students belonging to ScheduledCaste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and women are settling at a level of around 6%,3% arid 25co respectively, though the main objective of the university is to provide education, among other things, to "large segment ofsociety" with special emphasis on the disadvantaged groups. In the present paper, the data has been collectedfrom various sources to analyse casual factor for low enrolment of SC,ST and women groups. This gives acontrary view and not in proportion to their demographic position in the society. Besides this, an attempt hasbeen made to offer some measures to improve the enrolment of these groups. In brief, the present paper intends to critically analyse the following aspects of IGNOU impact on the disadvantaged groups: 1.Status ofenrolment of SC, ST and women groups in IGNOU programmes.2.Causes of low enrolment. 3.Measures suggested for further improvement of education among the disadvantaged groups.展开更多

As theAsia-Pacific is well provided with communication satellites all across the region,satellite-based digital audio broadcasting can be particularly usefulfor launching joint educational ventures by different open universities in the region, mass level awarenessprogrammes on a regional scale as well as for development communication in general. The paper examines the new technology of satellite-based digital audio broadcasting, its potentialities inthe context of distance education and some infrastructure requirements for its effective use. It is noted that,in addition to transmission of sound, digital broadcasting system can simultaneously carry multi-media. Therefore, the system can he readily adopted for: Audio/audio-graphic conferencing; High quality broadcasting ofeducational audios; Data broadeasting for real time delivery of textual materials; Transmission of multi-mediacourse wares. As the new technology combines in itself the inherent pedagogical virtues of the audio medium, vast andinstant reach, simultaneous transmission of multi-media content and real-time interactivity, digital audiobroadcasting holds the promise of a cost-effective solution for the distance education needs of the region atlarge.展开更多
