The method could be employed to handle the vertical flow under variably saturated conditions and for horizontal flow as well. The method allows for better estimation of velocities at the element nodes which can be used as direct input to transport models. The advection-dispersion process was treated by the Eulerian-Lagrangian approach with particle tracking technique using the velocities at FEM nodes. The method was verified with the classical one dimensional model and applied to simulate contaminant transport process through a slurry wall as a barrier to prevent leachate pollution from a sanitary landfill.展开更多

It has been used in...BACKGROUND Ilizarov non-free bone plasty is a method of distraction osteogenesis using the Ilizarov apparatus for external fixation which originated in Russia and was disseminated across the world. It has been used in long bone defect and nonunion management along with free vascularized grafting and induced membrane technique. However, the shortcomings and problems of these methods still remain the issues which restrict their overall use.AIM To study the recent available literature on the role of Ilizarov non-free bone plasty in long bone defect and nonunion management, its problems and the solutions to these problems in order to achieve better treatment outcomes.METHODS Three databases(Pub Med, Scopus, and Web of Science) were searched for literature sources on distraction osteogenesis, free vascularized grafting and induced membrane technique used in long bone defect and nonunion treatment within a five-year period(2015-2019). Full-text clinical articles in the English language were selected for analysis only if they contained treatment results,complications and described large patient samples(not less than ten cases for congenital, post-tumor resection cases or rare conditions, and more than 20 cases for the rest). Case reports were excluded.RESULTS Fifty full-text articles and reviews on distraction osteogenesis were chosen.Thirty-five clinical studies containing large series of patients treated with this method and problems with its outcome were analyzed. It was found that distraction osteogenesis techniques provide treatment for segmental bone defects and nonunion of the lower extremity in many clinical situations, especially in complex problems. The Ilizarov techniques treat the triad of problems simultaneously(bone loss, soft-tissue loss and infection). Management of tibial defects mostly utilizes the Ilizarov circular fixator. Monolateral fixators are preferable in the femur. The use of a ring fixator is recommended in patients with an infected tibial bone gap of more than 6 cm. High rates of successful 展开更多
BACKGROUND The Ilizarov bone transport(IBT)and the Masquelet induced membrane technique(IMT)have specific merits and shortcomings,but numerous studies have shown their efficacy in the management of extensive long-bone...BACKGROUND The Ilizarov bone transport(IBT)and the Masquelet induced membrane technique(IMT)have specific merits and shortcomings,but numerous studies have shown their efficacy in the management of extensive long-bone defects of various etiologies,including congenital deficiencies.Combining their strong benefits seems a promising strategy to enhance bone regeneration and reduce the risk of refractures in the management of post-traumatic and congenital defects and nonunion that failed to respond to other treatments.AIM To combine IBT and IMT for the management of severe tibial defects and pseudarthrosis,and present preliminary results of this technological solution.METHODS Seven adults with post-traumatic tibial defects(subgroup A)and nine children(subgroup B)with congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia(CPT)were treated with the combination of IMT and IBT after the failure of previous treatments.The mean number of previous surgeries was 2.0±0.2 in subgroup A and 3.3±0.7 in subgroup B.Step 1 included Ilizarov frame placement and spacer introduction into the defect to generate the induced membrane which remained in the interfragmental gap after spacer removal.Step 2 was an osteotomy and bone transport of the fragment through the tunnel in the induced membrane,its compression and docking for consolidation without grafting.The outcomes were retrospectively studied after a mean follow-up of 20.8±2.7 mo in subgroup A and 25.3±2.3 mo in subgroup B.RESULTS The“true defect”after resection was 13.3±1.7%in subgroup A and 31.0±3.0%in subgroup B relative to the contralateral limb.Upon completion of treatment,defects were filled by 75.4±10.6%and 34.6±4.2%,respectively.Total duration of external fixation was 397±9.2 and 270.1±16.3 d,including spacer retention time of 42.4±4.5 and 55.8±6.6 d,in subgroups A and B,respectively.Bone infection was not observed.Postoperative complications were several cases of pin-tract infection and regenerate deformity in both subgroups.Ischemic regeneration was observed in two cases 展开更多
Inverse calculations using data from 16 repeat hydrographic transects collected from April 2003 to June 2007 have yielded velocity structures and volume transports(VTs) of the Ryukyu Current in the region east of the ...Inverse calculations using data from 16 repeat hydrographic transects collected from April 2003 to June 2007 have yielded velocity structures and volume transports(VTs) of the Ryukyu Current in the region east of the northern Ryukyu Islands.The inverse calculation results show that the Ryukyu Current is dominated by a subsurface velocity core with maximum velocities from 15.1 to 80.0 cm/s,whose positions vary between 110 and 600 dbar and 27.2°-28.2°N along the transect.The mean velocity exhibits a subsurface velocity core with a maximum value of 24.6 cm/s at 326 dbar depth,a VT of 14.0 Sv(1 Sv≡106 m3/s),a vertical dimension of 800 m,and a horizontal dimension of 60 km.The seasonal mean velocities show that the Ryukyu Current is stronger in autumn than in other seasons.It is suggested that this seasonal variation is coincident with the intensification of the anticyclonic eddy south of Shikoku,Japan.展开更多
Contagious pathogens like COVID-19 transmitted via respiratory droplets spread effortlessly in the passenger compartments of transport,significantly jeopardizing passengers’safety when taking public transportation.To...Contagious pathogens like COVID-19 transmitted via respiratory droplets spread effortlessly in the passenger compartments of transport,significantly jeopardizing passengers’safety when taking public transportation.To date,studies on the fundamental theories of airborne droplet transmission and the engineering application of decontamination techniques are insufficient for the prevention and control of pathogens transmitting in the compartments of passenger transport.It is essential to systematically investigate the control approaches to restrain pathogens from transmitting in passenger compartments.Herein,a theoretical framework for calculating the transmission of pathogens in a complex compartment environment was proposed,and experimental platforms that satisfy the Biosafety Level-2 Laboratory safety level for compartment environment simulations were built based on a set of real train cabins.On these bases,numerical investigations on the motion of pathogen-laden droplets were conducted,and decontamination techniques were examined experimentally.Thereby,control measures on the pathogen transmission and pathogen decontamination schemes were proposed.Moreover,highly efficient decontamination devices were developed,and coping strategies for epidemic emergencies were devised.The outcomes provide theoretical and technical support for developing the next generation of transportation and the prevention and control measures cooperatively considering regular and pandemic times.展开更多
Quantum tunneling conductance of molecular junctions originates from the charge transport through theπ-orbitals(π-transport)and theσ-orbitals(σ-transport)of the molecules,but theσ-transport can not be observed du...Quantum tunneling conductance of molecular junctions originates from the charge transport through theπ-orbitals(π-transport)and theσ-orbitals(σ-transport)of the molecules,but theσ-transport can not be observed due to the more rapid decay of the tunneling conductance in theσ-system compared to that in theπ-system.Here,we demonstrate that dominantσ-transport can be observed inπ-conjugated molecular junctions at the sub-nanometer scale using the scanning tunneling microscope break junction technique(STM-BJ).We have found that the conductance of meta-connected picolinic acid,which mainly occurs byσ-transport,is∼35 times higher than that of its para-isomer,which is entirely different from what is expected fromπ-transport through these systems.Flicker noise analysis reveals that the transport through the meta-connection exhibits more through-bond transport than the para-counterpart and density functional theory(DFT)shows that theσ-system provides the dominant transport path.These results reveal that theσ-electrons,rather than theπ-electrons,can dominate charge transport through conjugated molecular junctions at the sub-nanometer scale,and this provides a new avenue toward the future miniaturization of molecular devices and materials.展开更多
