Based on the first 13.4 yr of Fermi science data in the energy range from 300 Me V to 500 Ge V,we discovered a bright Ge V gamma-ray source with a ~5.64σ detection,named Fermi J1242.5+3236,which has an offset of about0°.0996 from a nearby star-forming galaxy NGC 4631.When using the 12 yr’ data,the detection significance of Fermi J1242.5+3236 is about 4.72σ.Fermi J1242.5+3236 is a steady point source without significant temporal variability and has a hard gamma-ray photon index of about-1.60 ± 0.24.The spatial offset and the hard gammaray spectrum disfavor this source as the diffuse gamma-ray emission from this galaxy.This new source might have a possible origin of an unidentified background blazar,which is more likely a high-synchrotron-peaked blazar for its hard gamma-ray photon index.A follow-up optical observation would help distinguish origin of Fermi J1242.5+3236. 展开更多

We report the discovery of 64 luminous infrared galaxies, based on new observations of 20 square degrees from the LAMOST Complete Spectroscopic Survey of Pointing Area at the Southern Galactic Cap and the WISE 22 μm catalog from the AllW ISE Data Release. Half of them are classified as late-type spirals and the others are classified as peculiar/compact galaxies. The peculiar/compact galaxies tend to exhibit higher luminosities and lower stellar masses. We also separate AGNs from HII galaxies in a simple way by examining LAMOST spectra. Those cases show that host AGNs are easily distinguished from others in the mid-infrared color-color diagrams. 展开更多

An Analytic Model of Galactic Winds and Mass Outflows

Galactic winds and mass outflows are observed both in nearby starburst galaxies and in high-redshiff star-forming galaxies. We develop a simple analytic model to understand the observed superwind phenomenon with a discussion of the model uncertainties. Our model is built upon the model of McKee & Ostriker for the interstellar medium. It allows one to predict how properties of a superwind,such as wind velocity and mass outflow rate, are related to properties of its starforming host galaxy, such as size, gas density and star formation rate. The model predicts a threshold of star formation rate density for the generation of observable galactic winds. Galaxies with more concentrated star formation activities produce superwinds with higher velocities. The predicted mass outflow rates are comparable to (or slightly larger than) the corresponding star formation rates. We apply our model to both local starburst galaxies and high-redshift Lyman break galaxies,and find its predictions to be in good agreement with current observations. Our model is simple and so can be easily incorporated into numerical simulations and semi-analytical models of galaxy formation. 展开更多

As part of a study of star formation history along the Hubble sequence, we present here the results for 11 elliptical galaxies with strong nebular emission lines. After removing the dilution from the underlying old stellar populations by use of stellar population synthesis model, we derive the accurate fluxes of all the emission lines in these objects, which are then classified, using emission line ratios, into one Seyfert 2, six LINERs and four HII galaxies. We also identify one HII galaxy (A1216+04) as a hitherto unknown Wolf-Rayet galaxy from the presence of the WolfRayet broad bump at 4650A. We propose that the star-forming activities in elliptical galaxies are triggered by either galaxy-galaxy interaction or the merging of a small satellite/a massive star cluster, as has been suggested by recent numerical simulations. 展开更多

Circumnuclear Star Forming Activity in NGC 3982

We present a study of the nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 3982 using optical, infrared and X-ray data acquired by SDSS, Spitzer and Chandra. Our main results are as follows: (1) A simple stellar population synthesis on the nuclear and circumnuclear SDSS spectra gives unambiguous evidence of young stellar components in both the nuclear and circumnuclear regions. (2) The Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) spectrum of the central region (∽ 3") shows a power-law continuum, a silicate emission feature at 9.7μm, and significant PAH emission features at 7.7, 8.6, 11.3 and 12.7 pro, suggesting the coexistence of AGN and starburst activities in the central region of NGC 3982. (3) We estimate the star formation rate (SFR) of the circumnuclear (∽ 5" - 20") region from the Hα luminosity to be SFRHα = 0.52 M⊙ yr^-1, which is consistent with the result from the Spitzer IRAC 8 μm luminosity, SFR8.0μm = 0.57 M⊙ yr^-1. (4) We measure the spectral energy distribution for the active nucleus of NGC 3982 from radio to X-ray, and obtain a bolometric luminosity of Lbol 4.5 × 10^42 erg s-1, corresponding to an Eddington ratio (Lbol//LEdd) of 0.014 The HST image of NGC 3982 shows a nuclear mini-spiral between the circumnuclear starforming region and the nucleus, which could be the channel through which gas is transported to the supermassive black hole from the circumnuclear star-forming region. 展开更多

The Long-term Survival Chances of Young Massive Star Clusters

We review the long-term survival chances of young massive star clusters (YMCs), hallmarks of intense starburst episodes often associated with Violent galaxy interactions. We address the key question as to whether at least some of these YMCs can be considered protoglobular clusters (GCs), in which case these would be expected to evolve into counterparts of the ubiquitous old GCs believed to be among the oldest galactic building blocks. In the absence of significant external perturbations, the key factor determining a cluster's long-term survival chances is the shape of its stellar initial mass function (IMF). It is, however, not straightforward to assess the IMF shape in unresolved extragalactic YMCs. We discuss in detail the promise of using high-resolution spectroscopy to make progress towards this goal, as well as the numerous pitfalls associated with this approach. We also discuss the latest progress in worldwide efforts to better understand the evolution of entire cluster systems, the disruption processes they are affected by, and whether we can use recently gained insights to determine the nature of at least some of the YMCs observed in extragalactic starbursts as proto-GCs. We conclude that there is an increasing body of evidence that GC formation appears to be continuing until today; their long-term evolution crucially depends on their environmental conditions, however. 展开更多

Observational evidence for the evolution of nuclear metallicity and star formation rate with the merger stage

We investigate the evolution of nuclear gas-phase oxygen abundance and star formation rate(SFR) of local far-infrared selected star-forming galaxies along the merger sequence, as traced by their optical morphologies. The sample was drawn from a cross-correlation analysis of the IRAS Point Source Catalog Redshift Survey and 1 Jy ultraluminous infrared galaxy sample with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 database. The investigation is done by comparing our sample to a control sample matched in the normalized redshift distribution in two diagnostics, which are the nuclear gas-phase metallicity vs.stellar mass and the nuclear SFR vs. stellar mass diagrams. Galaxies with different morphological types show different mass-metallicity relations(MZRs). Compared to the MZR defined by the control sample,isolated spirals have comparable metallicities with the control sample at a given stellar mass. Spirals in pairs and interacting galaxies with projected separations of rp 〉 20 kpc show a mild metallicity dilution of0.02–0.03 dex. Interacting galaxies with rp 〈 20 kpc, pre-mergers and advanced mergers are underabundant by~0.06,~0.05 and~0.04 dex, respectively. This shows an evolutionary trend that the metallicity is increasingly depressed as the merging proceeds and it is diluted most dramatically when two galaxies are closely interacting. Afterwards, the interstellar medium(ISM) is enriched when the galaxies coalesce.This is the first time that such ISM enrichment at the final coalescence stage has been observed, which demonstrates the importance of supernova explosions in affecting the nuclear metallicity. Moreover, the central SFR enhancement relative to the control sample evolves simultaneously with the nuclear gas-phase oxygen abundance. IRAS F21013-0739:a possible evolutionary successor of an ultraluminous infrared galaxy

The H-band absolute magnitude is MH = -25.1, whic... We present a stellar population synthesis study of a type II luminous infrared galaxy, IRAS F21013-0739. Optical images show clear characteristics of a merger remnant. The H-band absolute magnitude is MH = -25.1, which is -2 times as luminous as L* galaxies. Stellar populations are obtained through the stellar synthesis code STARLIGHT. We find that it experienced a recent starburst (SB) phase - 100 Myr ago. By reconstructing the ultraviolet-to-optical spectrum, and adopting Calzetti et al. and Leitherer et al.'s extinction curves, we estimate the past infrared (IR) luminosities of the host galaxy and find it may have experienced an ultraluminous infrared galaxy phase which lasted for about 100 Myr. Its i-band absolute magnitude is Mi = -22.463, and its spectral type shows type 2 active galactic nucleus (AGN) characteristics. The mass of the supermassive black-hole is estimated to be MBH = 1.6 × 107 M⊙ (lower- limit). The Eddington ratio Lbol/LEdd is 0.15, which is typical of Palomar-Green (PG) quasars. Both the nuclear SB and AGN contribute to the present IR luminosity budget, and the SB contributes -67%. On the diagram of IR color versus IR/opfical excess, it is located between IR quasars and PG quasars. These results indicate that IRAS F21013-0739 has probably evolved from a ULIRG, and it can possibly evolve into an AGN. 展开更多

We select 947 star-forming galaxies from SDSS-DR7 with [O III]λ4363emission lines detected at a signal-to-noise ratio larger than 5σ. Their electron temperatures and direct oxygen abundances are then determined. We compare the results from different methods. t2, the electron temperature in the low ionization region, estimated from t3, that in the high ionization region, is compared using three analysis relations between t2- t3. These show obvious differences, which result in some different ionic oxygen abundances. The results of t3, t2, O++/H+and O+/H+derived by using methods from IRAF and literature are also compared. The ionic abundances O++/H+are higher than O+/H+for most cases. The different oxygen abundances derived from Teand the strong-line ratios show a clear discrepancy, which is more obvious following increasing stellar mass and strong-line ratio R23. The sample of galaxies from SDSS with detected [O III]λ4363 have lower metallicites and higher star formation rates, so they may not be typical representatives of the whole population of galaxies. Adopting data objects from Andrews & Martini, Liang et al. and Lee et al. data, we derive new relations of stellar mass and metallicity for star-forming galaxies in a much wider stellar mass range: from 106 M to 1011 M. 展开更多
