As an emerging zero-dimensional nano crystalline porous material,porous organic cages(POCs)with soluble properties in organic solvents,are promising candidates as molecular fillers in mixed matrix membranes(MMMs).The ...As an emerging zero-dimensional nano crystalline porous material,porous organic cages(POCs)with soluble properties in organic solvents,are promising candidates as molecular fillers in mixed matrix membranes(MMMs).The pore structure of POCs should be adjusted to trigger efficient gas separation performance,and the interaction between filler and matrix should be optimized.In this work,ionic liquid(IL)was introduced into the molecular fillers of CC3,to construct the IL@CC3/PIM-1 membrane to effectively separate CO_(2) from CH_(4).The advantages of doping IL include:(1)narrowing the cavity size of POCs from 4.4 to 3.9Åto enhance the diffusion selectivity,(2)strengthening the CO_(2) solubility to heighten the gas permeability,and(3)improving the compatibility between filler and matrix to upgrade membrane stability.After the optimization of the membrane composite,the IL@CC3/PIM-1-10%membrane possesses the CO_(2) permeability of 7868 Barrer and the CO_(2)/CH_(4) selectivity of 73.4,which compared to the CC3/PIM-1-10%membrane,improved by 15.9%and 106.2%,respectively.Furthermore,the membrane has maintained a stable separation performance at varied temperatures and pressures during the long-term test.The proposed method offers an efficient way to improve the performance of POCs-based MMMs in gas separation.展开更多
A monolithic column-based mass spectrometry(MS)analysis kit was prepared for whole blood analysis with MS.The kit is disposable and can be used for purification,storage,transportation and direct analysis of whole bloo...A monolithic column-based mass spectrometry(MS)analysis kit was prepared for whole blood analysis with MS.The kit is disposable and can be used for purification,storage,transportation and direct analysis of whole blood.The kit mainly consists of a capillary for quantitative microsampling,a cation exchange monolithic column for purification and storage,and a syringe for loading sample.This kit is very friendly to various users that one can easily siphon the blood in the kit followed by rapid clean-up.We established a quantitative method using the kit with a limit detection as low as 0.33 nmol/L,and achieved more than five orders of magnitude enhancement in sensitivity compared to direct nanoelectrospray ionization MS analysis.The column can avoid analyte exposure to environment,which helps the storage of the sample for laboratory analysis.The relative standard deviation of immediate blood analysis and storage blood analysis within 10 d was less than 10%.This method has been successfully applied to the quantitative analysis of procainamide hydrochloride in 2μL rat blood.These results indicate that this disposable kit does have the potential to achieve highly sensitive quantitative MS analysis in biological samples,which is expected to become a cost-effective and powerful tool for in vitro diagnostics.展开更多
In today’s manufacturing industries,hard competition between rival firms makes it compulsory for researchers to design lighter and cheaper machine components due to the megatrends of cost-effectiveness and anti-pollu...In today’s manufacturing industries,hard competition between rival firms makes it compulsory for researchers to design lighter and cheaper machine components due to the megatrends of cost-effectiveness and anti-pollution.At this point,aluminum syntactic foams(ASFs)are new-generation engineering composites and come into the upfront as a problem-solver.Owing to their features like low density,sufficient elongation,and perfect energy absorption ability,these advanced foams have been considerably seductive for many industrial sectors nowadays.In this study,an industrial-oriented automatic die casting technology was used for the first time to manufacture the combination of AA7075/porous expanded clay(PEC).Micro evaluations(optical and FESEM)reveal that there is a homogenous particle distribution in the foam samples,and inspections are compatible with the other ASF studies.Additionally,T6 aging heat treatment was operated on one half of the produced foams to explore the probable impact of aging on the compressive responses.Attained results show that PEC particles can be an alternative to expensive hollow spheres used in the previous works.Besides,a favorable relationship is ascertained between the aging treatment and mechanical properties such as compression strength and plateau strength.展开更多
Silica biomaterials including Bioglass offer great biocompatibility and bioactivity but fail to provide pore and degradation features needed for tissue engineering.Herein we report on the synthesis and characterizatio...Silica biomaterials including Bioglass offer great biocompatibility and bioactivity but fail to provide pore and degradation features needed for tissue engineering.Herein we report on the synthesis and characterization of novel amorphous silica fiber matrices to overcome these limitations.Amorphous silica fibers were fused by sintering to produce porous matrices.The effects of sacrificial polymer additives such as polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)and cellulose fibers(CF)on the sintering process were also studied.The resulting matrices formed between sintering temperatures of 1,350-1,550◦C retained their fiber structures.The matrices presented pores in the range of 50-200μm while higher sintering temperatures resulted in increased pore diameter.PVA addition to silica significantly reduced the pore diameter and porosity compared with silica matrices with or without the addition of CF.The PVA additive morphologically appeared to fuse the silica fibers to a greater extent and resulted in significantly higher compressive modulus and strength than the rest of the matrices synthesized.These matrices lost roughly 30%of their original mass in an in vitro degradation study over 40 weeks.All matrices absorbed 500 wt%of water and did not change in their overall morphology,size,or shape with hydration.These fiber matrices supported human mesenchymal stem cell adhesion,proliferation,and mineralized matrix production.Amorphous silica fiber biomaterials/matrices reported here are biodegradable and porous and closely resemble the native extracellular matrix structure and water absorption capacity.Extending the methodology reported here to alter matrix properties may lead to a variety of tissue engineering,implant,and drug delivery applications.展开更多
This work focused on the influence of TiC reinforcing particles on the tribological properties of titanium matrix composites(TMCs)with open porosity,processed by spark plasma sintering(SPS).Materials composed of an eq...This work focused on the influence of TiC reinforcing particles on the tribological properties of titanium matrix composites(TMCs)with open porosity,processed by spark plasma sintering(SPS).Materials composed of an equimolar mixture of Ti and TiH2 with 0,3,10 and 30 vol.% of TiC were sintered at 850 ℃.Nanoindentation and wear tests were carried out to assess the nanohardness and the wear resistance in a tribometer with a reciprocating sliding ball-on-flat configuration.Results showed a nanohardness increment from 5 to 14 GPa with increasing TiC content.The coefficient of friction(CoF)showed a minimum of 0.2 for 10% TiC grade,which also showed the lowest wear rate.For the low TiC content sample,adhesive wear with severe plastic deformation was identified.Meanwhile,medium content TiC sample showed a mechanical mixed layer(MML),whereas high TiC content composite showed abrasive as the main wear mechanism.In conclusion,the wear mechanisms,CoFs and wear volume changed with TiC content.展开更多
Phase change materials(PCMs)are used in various thermal energy storage applications but are limited by their low thermal conductivity.One method to increase conductivity involves impregnating organic PCMs into highly ...Phase change materials(PCMs)are used in various thermal energy storage applications but are limited by their low thermal conductivity.One method to increase conductivity involves impregnating organic PCMs into highly porous conductive matrix materials.Of these materials,compressed expanded natural graphite(CENG)matrices have received the most attention.Despite this attention,the effect that CENG processing has on PCM saturation and overall matrix thermal conductivity has not been fully investigated.Therefore,the effect of the heat treatment process used to expand intercalated graphite flakes is evaluated here.Higher heat treatment temperatures yielded higher saturation rates and overall saturation at similar matrix porosities.For example,increasing temperature from 300℃to 700℃resulted in approximately 60%-70%increase in pore saturation after 100 minutes of soaking.The exposure time to heat treatment had less of an effect on PCM saturation.The exposure time had negligible effect above 30 min and above 500℃heating temperatures.However,because the expanded graphite was found to oxidize around 700℃,the use of longer exposure time in manufacturing applications can be beneficial if a shortened impregnation time is needed.Heat treatment conditions did not impact thermal conductivity.The composite latent heat of fusion was also reduced approximately proportionally to the PCM mass fraction.A local maximum in axial thermal conductivity was observed at around 83%porosity,which is similar to previous studies.The observed conductivity at this maximum was a factor of 81 times greater than the conductivity of the PCM.展开更多
