Improper location results in defects, such as cold shut, air cavity, shrinkage, etc. Therefore, it’s sure that the molten metal full fills the mould cavity before it solidifies. And, it’s to be wished that no vortex occur during the filling process, because the vortex is a main source that induces gas entrapment. To get the high quality and performance product, the inlet and outlet locations must be set properly. This paper, an optimal design problem of nozzle and vent locations, which is constrained by nonlinear partial differential equations and boundary and initial conditions, is introduced to describe the location selection on die casting filling process. By numerical simulation, one can compare the filling time, flow pattern and temperature field at different inlet and outlet locations, then choose the most proper locations.展开更多

In view of flow features and stealth constraints, the inverse-design idea is described and the uncertainty-based robust design model is presented. A robust design system employs this model to combine deterministic optimization and robust optimization and is applied into design of a conformal expansion nozzle. The results indicate that design optimization can conform to the anticipation of the inversedesign idea and significantly improve the aerodynamic performance that meet the requirement of 6σ. The present method is a feasible nozzle design strategy that integrates robust optimization and inverse-design.展开更多

A numerical simulation on the turbulent flow and heat transfer coupled with solidification in the slab mold using the volume of fluid (VOF) model and the enthalpy-porosity scheme was conducted and the emphasis was put upon the flow effect on the shell thickness profiles in longitudinal and transverse directions. The results show that the jet acts a stronger impingement on the shell of narrow face, which causes a zero-increase of shell thickness in a certain range near the impingement point. The thinnest shell on the slab cross-section locates primarily in the center of the narrow face, and secondly near the comer of the wide face. Nozzle optimization can obviously increase the shell thickness and make it more uniform.展开更多
