The suppression of polarization cross talk in lead zirconate titanate phase modulators as a key error source has been challenging for open-loop fiber optic gyroscopes(FOGs).We developed a polarization-diversity optica...The suppression of polarization cross talk in lead zirconate titanate phase modulators as a key error source has been challenging for open-loop fiber optic gyroscopes(FOGs).We developed a polarization-diversity optical frequency domain reflectometry(OFDR)to measure the distributed modulation polarization error in the modulator.The error contributes 8×10^(−6) rad to FOG’s bias instability.Using a UV-fabricated in-fiberλ/4 wave plate and polarization-mode converter with fiber taper technology,the modulation error has been suppressed by 15 dB in assembled FOGs.This approach reduced error with temperature from 25°/h to 0.7°/h,meeting the requirements of control-level gyroscopes with bias errors less than 1°/h.展开更多

Because of the high cost and complex architecture of multicast capable (MC) node, splitter- sharing switch structure is introduced in which the light splitters are shared by all input signals. To accommodate to this situation, by extending resource ReSerVation protocol-traffic engineering (RSVP-TE) and open shortest path first-traffic engineering (OSPF-TE), a new optical multicast mechanism is provided and the signaling flow and its finite state machine model are given. At the same time, a multicast routing algorithm in splitter-sharing optical network and a changing link weight policy to balance network traffic are proposed. Simulations in NSFNET show no matter with or without wavelength converters, when the number of splitters is 25% of that demanded by traditional MC nodes, the multicast performance has been close to the ideal circumstance. Wavelength converters and changing link weight help much in improving the traffic performance when the number of splitters is adequate.展开更多

The performance of the p...A novel scheme for all-optical inverted wavelength conversion with 40-Gb/s pseudorandom bit sequences (PRBSs) based on a modified terahertz optical asymmetric demultiplexer (TOAD) is proposed. The performance of the proposed wavelength converter is analyzed in term of extinction ratio (ER) through numerical simulations. For a typical ER of 10 dB, some key characteristic parameters of the semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) are designed. With the properly designed parameters, a high quality eye diagram is achievable, indicating that the amplitude fluctuation of the output signal is effectively reduced.展开更多
The systematical and scalable frameworks were provided for estimating the blocking probabilities under asynchronous traffic in optical burst switching(OBS) nodes with limited wavelength conversion capability(LWCC) . T...The systematical and scalable frameworks were provided for estimating the blocking probabilities under asynchronous traffic in optical burst switching(OBS) nodes with limited wavelength conversion capability(LWCC) . The relevant system architectures of limited range and limited number of wavelength converters(WCs) deployed by a share-per-fiber(SPF) mode were developed,and the novel theoretical analysis of node blocking probability was derived by combining the calculation of discouraged arrival rate in a birth-death process and two-dimensional Markov chain model of SPF. The simulation results on single node performance verify the accuracy and effectiveness of the analysis models. Under most scenarios,it is difficult to distinguish the plots generated by the analysis and simulation. As the conversion degree increases,the accuracy of the analysis model worsens slightly. However,the utmost error on burst loss probability is far less than one order of magnitude and hence,still allows for an accurate estimate. Some results are of actual significance to the construction of next-generation commercial OBS backbones.展开更多
