AIM:To compare if there is an improvement in visual functions with age-related cataracts between patients receiving a aspherical intraocular lens(IOL) based on corneal wavefront aberration and patients randomly assign...AIM:To compare if there is an improvement in visual functions with age-related cataracts between patients receiving a aspherical intraocular lens(IOL) based on corneal wavefront aberration and patients randomly assigned lenses.METHODS:A total of 124 eyes of 124 patients with age-related cataracts were placed in experimental group and a group receiving randomly assigned(RA) lenses.The experimental group was undergone Pentacam corneal spherical aberration measurement before surgery; the targeted range for residual total spherical aberration after surgery was set to 0-0.3 μm. Patients with a corneal spherical aberration 【0.3 μm were implanted with a zero-spherical aberration advanced optics(AO) aspherical IOL and patients with an aberration ≥0.3 μm received a Tecnis Z9003 aspherical lens in experimental group. RA patients were randomly implanted with an AO lens or a Tecnis Z9003 lens. Three months after surgery total spherical aberration, photopic/mesopic contrast sensitivities, photopic/mesopic with glare contrast sensitivities, and logMAR vision were measured.RESULTS:Statistical analysis on logMAR vision showed no significant difference between two groups(P =0.413). The post-surgical total spherical aberration was 0.126 ±0.097 μm and 0.152 ±0.151 μm in the experimental and RA groups, respectively(P =0.12). The mesopic contrast sensitivities at spatial frequencies of 6,12 and 18 c/d in the experimental group were significantly higher than of the RA group(P =0.00; P =0.04;P =0.02). The mesopic with glare contrast sensitivity in the experimental group at a spatial frequency of 18 c/d was also significantly higher vs the RA group(P =0.01).CONCLUSION:Pre-surgical corneal spherical aberration measurement in cataract patients followed bycustomized selection of aspherical IOL implants improved mesopic contrast sensitivities at high spatial frequencies, and thus is a superior strategy compared to the random selection of aspherical intraocular lens implants.展开更多

AIM: To study the distribution of ocular higher-order aberrations(HOAs) and mesopic pupil size in individuals screened for refractive surgery. · METHODS: Ocular HOAs and mesopic pupil size were studied in 2 458 e...AIM: To study the distribution of ocular higher-order aberrations(HOAs) and mesopic pupil size in individuals screened for refractive surgery. · METHODS: Ocular HOAs and mesopic pupil size were studied in 2 458 eyes of 1 240 patients with myopia, myopic astigmatism and compound myopic astigmatism and 215 eyes of 110 patients with hyperopia, hyperopic astigmatism and compound hyperopic astigmatism using the Zywave aberrometer (Busch& Lomb). All patients had correctable refractive errors without a history of refractive surgery or underlying diseases. Root-mean-square values of HOAs, total spherical aberration, total coma and mesopic pupil size were analyzed. Ocular HOAs were measured across a ≥ 6.0 mm pupil, and pupil size measurements were performed under the mesopic condition. · RESULTS: The mean values of HOAs, total spherical aberration and total coma in the myopic group were 0.369 μm, ±0.233, 0.133±0.112μm and 0.330±0.188μm, respectively. In the hyperopic group the mean values of HOAs, total spherical aberration and total coma were 0.418μm±0.214, 0.202±0.209μm and 0.343±0.201μm, respectively. Hyperopes showed greater total HOAs (P <0.01) and total spherical aberration (P <0.01) compared to myopes. In age-matched analysis, only the amount of total spherical aberration was higher in the hyperopic group (P =0.05). Mesopic pupil size in the myopic group was larger (P ≤0.05). · CONCLUSION: The results suggested that significant levels of HOAs were found in both groups which are important for planning refractive surgeries on Iranians. AIM:To determine the effects of change in light conditions on refractive error and visual functions including visual acuity,stereopsis and contrast sensitivity.METHODS:This cross-sectional study was conducted in the o...AIM:To determine the effects of change in light conditions on refractive error and visual functions including visual acuity,stereopsis and contrast sensitivity.METHODS:This cross-sectional study was conducted in the optometry clinic of the Shahid Beheshti School of Rehabilitation on 48 students in 2021-2022.All of them had eye health and normal visual function and could have refractive errors or not.Light intensity of 4 lx was considered equivalent to photopic light condition and light intensity of 1 lx was considered to be equivalent to mesopic light condition.The amount of refractive error was checked by auto refractometer and its changes in mesopic light condition were subjectively measured.Also,visual acuity,stereopsis and contrast sensitivity(in five spatial frequencies of 1.5,3,6,12,and 18 cycles per degree),were measured first in photopic light condition and then in mesopic light condition,by Snellen control vision chart,stereo butterfly test and the M&S technology monitor test respectively.RESULTS:In the 48 student subjects with an average age of 22.69±3.56y,mean of refractive error as sphere equivalent,visual acuity and stereopsis were-1.25±1.74 diopters,0 logMAR,44.37±13.03 seconds of arc,respectively in photopic light condition while in mesopic light was equal to-1.56±1.75 diopters,0.12±0.09 logMAR and 50.62±33.35 seconds of arc,respectively.The mean of contrast sensitivity measured at spatial frequencies of 1.5,3,6,12,and 18 cycles per degree in photopic condition was equal to 2.38±0.04,2.37±0.07,2.04±0.21,1.27±0.32,0.82±0.27 logarithm of contrast sensitivity,respectively and in mesopic lighting condition was equal to 2.34±0.12,2.30±0.16,1.84±0.28,1.02±0.28,0.63±0.24 logarithm of contrast sensitivity,respectively.Statistical analysis showed a significant difference between the two lighting conditions in all evaluated variables[refractive error(P<0.001),visual acuity(P<0.001),stereopsis(P=0.008)and contrast sensitivity(P<0.001)].CONCLUSION:The refractive error of the student subjects in展开更多

Pupil si...·AIM:To study the relationship between corneal white-to- white (WTW) distance and mesopic pupil diameter. ·METHODS:This study is composed of 30 cases that underwent photorefractive keratotomy (PRK). Pupil size measurements were performed with Schwind ORK wavefront analyzer in mesopic conditions. WTW distance was measured with a measuring caliper. Also, A-scan ultrasound examination was performed in all patients. The relationship among the mesopic pupil diameter and age, sex, axial length, lens thickness, anterior chamber depth(ACD), horizontal WTW distance, vertical WTW distance, spherical equivalent, and average keratometry were analyzed with univariate and multivariate regression analysis. ·RESULTS:Mean pupil diameter was (6.39±0.80)mm (range:3.70mm to 7.73mm. Horizontal WTW distance measurements were between 11.00mm and 12.50mm and mean horizontal WTW distance was (11.79±0.43)mm. On the other hand, vertical WTW distances ranged between 10.00mm and 13.00mm, and their mean was(11.42±0.72)mm. Bivariate correlation between pupil diameter and other variables showed that the axial length, ACD, spherical equivalent, and horizontal WTW distance had a moderate correlation with mesopic pupil diameter. Multiple regression analysis revealed that spherical equivalent and horizontal WTW distances were significantly associated with mesopic pupil diameter (R =0.598, R 2=0.358 P =0.02). ·CONCLUSION:This study shows that mesopic pupil diameter is closely related to horizontal WTW distance. These two factors must be taken in consideration together in preoperative ablation zone planning.展开更多

With the increasing attention on circadian effects driven by light,lighting industry has inspired a revolution of photobiological lighting design.Due to diverse evaluation criteria for visual and non⁃visual systems,mo...With the increasing attention on circadian effects driven by light,lighting industry has inspired a revolution of photobiological lighting design.Due to diverse evaluation criteria for visual and non⁃visual systems,models that combine these evaluation parameters are indeed urgent.Thus,an integrated model for mesopic lighting evaluation of circadian effects was proposed.The circadian efficiency function adopted in this study was synthesized by CIE 1931 XYZ 2 deg color matching functions and standard scotopic sensitivity function.Then,the integrated model composed of International Commission on Illumination 1931 xy chromaticity coordinates,scotopic/photopic ratio,and illuminance could be obtained with synthesized circadian efficiency function.The model showed that for light sources with fixed chromaticity coordinates and fixed illuminance,enhancing the circadian effects is equivalent to increasing the scotopic/photopic ratio,which suggests a useful method for practitioners to explore the photobiologically reasonable spectrum for mesopic lighting.Light⁃emitting diodes spectra optimized by four⁃component color⁃mixing method were employed to figure out the property of the integrated model.展开更多
