However, recent research has challenged these beliefs and suggested potential positive effects of the menstrual cycle on cognitive performance. Despite these emerging findings, there is still a lack of consensus regarding the impact of the menstrual cycle on cognition, particularly in domains such as spatial reasoning, visual memory, and numerical memory. Hence, this study aimed to explore the relationship between the menstrual cycle and cognitive performance in these specific domains. Previous studies have reported mixed findings, with some suggesting no significant association and others indicating potential differences across the menstrual cycle. To contribute to this body of knowledge, we explored the research question of whether the menstrual cycles have a significant effect on cognition, particularly in the domains of spatial reasoning, visual and numerical memory in a regionally diverse sample of menstruating females. A total of 30 menstruating females from mixed geographical backgrounds participated in the study, and a repeated measures design was used to assess their cognitive performance in two phases of the menstrual cycle: follicular and luteal. The results of the study revealed that while spatial reasoning was not significantly related to the menstrual cycle (p = 0.256), both visual and numerical memory had significant positive associations (p < 0.001) with the luteal phase. However, since the effect sizes were very small, the importance of this relationship might be commonly overestimated. Future studies could thus entail designs with larger sample sizes, including neuro-biological measures of menstrual stages, and consequently inform competent interventions and support systems.展开更多

Historic preservation and heritage conservation are two mainstream concepts related to the sustainability and renewal of historic houses.With the aim of enhancing the sustainability of historic houses,this article cri...Historic preservation and heritage conservation are two mainstream concepts related to the sustainability and renewal of historic houses.With the aim of enhancing the sustainability of historic houses,this article criticizes the view of historic preservation that insists on preserving historic houses with their old appearances,which does not fully develop their sustainability.In contrast,the article provides support for the view of heritage conservation that aims to promote the sustainability of historic houses and related legislation.In the second and third parts,this article examines the theoretical origin of historic preservation,which emphasizes and summarizes the one-way protection of cultural memory via historic houses.In the fourth part,the article turns to heritage conservation,highlights the sustainable cycle between historic houses and cultural memory,and underlines the advantages of this sustainable cycle.In the fifth part,this article presents a sustainable approach to heritage conservation and related legal safeguards by taking the renewal of historic houses in China’s Bagua Village(or"Eight Diagrams Village")as an example.In the last part,this paper summarizes the theoretical value,practical value and limitations of this article.The findings can facilitate the UN’s sustainable development of social inclusion,economic growth,and environmental protection to promote the heritage legislation and policy of present and future generations.展开更多
Allocation,dereferencing,and freeing of memory data in kernels are coherently linked.There widely exist real cases where the correctness of memory is compromised.This incorrectness in kernel memory brings about signif...Allocation,dereferencing,and freeing of memory data in kernels are coherently linked.There widely exist real cases where the correctness of memory is compromised.This incorrectness in kernel memory brings about significant security issues,e.g.,information leaking.Though memory allocation,dereferencing,and freeing are closely related,previous work failed to realize they are closely related.In this paper,we study the life-cycle of kernel memory,which consists of allocation,dereferencing,and freeing.Errors in them are called memory life-cycle(MLC)bugs.We propose an in-depth study of MLC bugs and implement a memory life-cycle bug sanitizer(MEBS)for MLC bug detection.Utilizing an interprocedural global call graph and novel identification approaches,MEBS can reveal memory allocation,dereferencing,and freeing sites in kernels.By constructing a modified define-use chain and examining the errors in the life-cycle,MLC bugs can be identified.Moreover,the experimental results on the latest kernels demonstrate that MEBS can effectively detect MLC bugs,and MEBS can be scaled to different kernels.More than 100 new bugs are exposed in Linux and FreeBSD,and 12 common vulnerabilities and exposures(CVE)are assigned.展开更多
