They are widely distributed and caused tremendous damages. The sliding mechanism and characteristics of these earthquake-induced landslides are different from those of conventional gravity landslides. Their occurrences are apparently controlled by the powerful earthquake, and they are characterized by high potential energy sliding and ejection sliding. In this article, the earthquake-induced landslides are classified, the characteristics of the sliding and destruction of these landslides are described, and the rela- tionship between the earthquake and the landslides is analyzed. The Donghekou (东河口) landslide is used as an example to characterize fast-moving long-distance earthquake-induced ejection slippage and landslide. This research suggests that many phenomena and issues related to earthquake-induced land- slide are beyond current recognition and knowledge, and new methodologies should be adopted to consider the effect of the earthquake as the paramount factor in the development of landslides. Furthermore, the study of fast-moving long-distance earthquake-induced landslides can also shed light on the formation of old and ancient landslides.展开更多

These landslides caused deaths, damaged infrastructure and threatened endanger species. This study analyzed the impact of landslides on giant pandas and their habitats from the following aspects: threatening pandas‘ lives, damaging pandas‘ habitat, influencing giant panda behavior, increasing habitat fragmentation; the final aspect, and blocking gene flow by cutting off corridors. A habitat suitability map was created by integrating the landslide factors with other traditional factors based on a logistics regression method. According to the landslide inventory map, there are 1313 landslides, 818 rock debris flows, 117 rock avalanches and 43 mud flows occurred in the study area. A correlation analysis indicated that landslides caused the pandas to migrate, and the core landslides within 1 km2 had greater influence on panda migration. These core landslides primarily occurred in mid-altitude regionscharacterized by high slopes, old geological ages, large areas and large rock mass volumes. The habitat suitability assessment results for the Wolong Natural Reserve had better prediction performance(80.9%) and demonstrated that 14.5%, 15.9%, 20.5%, 47.6% and 1.5% of the study area can be classified as very high, high, moderate, low and very low giant panda suitability areas, respectively. This study can be used to inform panda and panda habitat research, management and protection during post-quake reconstruction and recovery periods in China.展开更多

Previous studies have described the basic characteristics, distribution, and the formation mechanism of seismic landslides (Bijan Khazai et al., 2003; Chong Xu et al., 2013; Lewis a. Owen et al., 2008; Randall W. Jibson et al., 2006). However, few researches have focused on the early identification indicators of large-giant bedrock landslides triggered by earthquake (David k. Keefer., 1984; Janusz Wasowski et al., 2011; Alexander L.Strom., 2009; Patrick Meunier et al., 2008; Shahriar Vahdani et al., 2002; Bijan Khazai et al., 2003). This paper presents the identification indicators of large-giant bedrock landslides triggered by earthquake in the Longmenshan tectonic belt on the basic of their characteristics, distribution and the relationship between seismic landslides and the peak ground motion acceleration.展开更多

The modulation and triggering factors such as the earth rotation, earth tides are analyzed. The results show that: the giant earthquakes with the magnitude more than 8 occurred about every 24 years and the earthquakes with the magnitude more than 7 about every 7 years in Chinese mainland. The Western Kunlun Mountain M=8.1 earthquake exactly occurred at the expected time; The spatial distance show approximately the same distances between each two swarms. The earth rotation, earth tide, sun tide and sun magnetic field have played a role of modulation and triggering in the intensity. At last, the condi-tions for earthquake generation and occurrence are also discussed.展开更多

Because of the great influence of the great earthquake on the atmosphere, the atmos- pheric circulation and climate in the late stage of Nepal will be affected. The great earthquake had transient effects on China's climate. Firstly, tem- perature from the ground to high altitudes increased abnormally; secondly, after the occurrence of the great earthquake, extremely low pressure generated in the earthquake region, and cold and warm airflow converged, so that heavy rainfall occurred to the southwest of the plateau. Thirdly, it cut off southwesterly airflow transporting water vapor to regions south of the Yangtze River, so that hot and dry weather appeared in the regions in late April. Moreover, the great earthquake affected China's climate in a short term. Nepal's giant earthquake increased zonal circulation cell at lat- itudes, and the circulation cell could make subtropical high over Western Pacific strengthen and extend westward to control regions south of the Yan- gtze River, so that hot and dry weather appeared in regions south of the Yangtze River in summer. In the next year after the great earthquake oc- curred, the earthquake is conducive to the strengthening and maintaining of Meiyu zone in the Yangtze River basin, and large floods will appear easily in the Yangtze River basin.展开更多
