The correctionsare well within 10% for current experiments with working frequencies below ν < 100 GHz, but becomenon-negligible at high frequencies ν > 350 GHz. Moreover, the corrections appear to be slightlysmaller at higher l or smaller angular scales. We conclude that there is no need to include therelativistic corrections in the theoretical study of the SZ power spectrum especially at lowfrequencies unless the SZ power spectrum is used for precision cosmology.展开更多

If the massive galaxy cluster is spherically symmetric and relaxed, we can obtain the underlying total mass distribution accurately from its dynamical tracers using the spherical Jeans equations. Although the three tracers of clusters have very different number densities, velocity dispersions and anisotropies, they still trace the same total mass profile. We obtain the total mass profiles of clusters using these tracers separately and compare them with the true mass distributions. We find that:(1) the kinematics of dark matter trace the total mass of all clusters well and the mass inferred from dark matter are generally consistent with the true mass profiles with relative deviations smaller than ~ 25% at all radii;(2) stars in ~ 60% massive clusters are approaching equilibrium and the total mass of these clusters inferred from stars have relative deviations smaller than ~50% at all radii. Stellar substructures are rich and the mass inferred from stars tend to be over-estimated in the inner region;and(3) satellite galaxies are unrelaxed in the inner region and become more relaxed as the radius increases. The total mass inferred from satellites are under-estimated in all regions.展开更多

We argue that the ICM of the cooling flow in the galaxy group NGC 5813 is more likely to be heated by mixing of post-shock gas from jets residing in hot bubbles with the ICM, than by shocks or turbulent- heating. Shocks thermalize only a small fraction of their energy in the inner regions of the cooling flow; in order to adequately heat the inner part of the ICM, they would overheat the outer regions by a large factor, leading to its ejection from the group. Heating by mixing, which was found to be much more efficient than turbulent-heating and shocks-heating, hence, rescues the outer ICM of NGC 5813 from its predestined fate according to cooling flow feedback scenarios that are based on heating by shocks.展开更多

X-ray spectroscopy of galaxy clusters provides rich information about the physical state of hot intracluster gas and the underlying potential structure. In this paper, starting from the basic description of clusters under equilibrium conditions, we review properties of clusters revealed primarily through X-ray observations considering their thermal and dynamical evolutions. The future prospects of cluster studies using upcoming X-ray missions are also mentioned.展开更多

(the elliptical β model) and Bonamente et al. (the spherical β model), and the luminosity distance DL from Constitution and Union2 type Ia supernova (SNe Ia) datasets. To obtain DL associated with the observed DA at the same redshift, we smooth the noise of the SNe Ia in a model-independent way, obtain the evolutionary curve of DL and, finally, test the DD relation. We find that the elliptical β model, when compared with the SNe Ia from the Constitution compilation, is only consistent with the DD relation at the 3σ confidence level (CL), while the spherical β model is incompatible with the DD relation at the 3σ CL. For the Union2 compilation, the De Filippis and Bonamente samples are marginally compatible with the validity of the DD relation at the 1σ and 2σ CLs, respectively.展开更多

Both its profound theoretical motivation and its successful explanations for the galactic rotation curves and the gravitational scaling laws of clusters indicate that the TIS model is a promising candidate among other prevailing models such as the NFW profile and the Burkert profile. This promotes us to re-examine the universality of the TIS model on cluster scales from a different angle. Using an ensemble of X-ray surface brightness profiles of 45 clusters, we test the goodness of fit of the TIS predicted gas distributions to the X-ray data under the assumption of isothermal, hydrostatic equilibrium. Unlike the conventional B model or the NFW/Burkert profile, for which about half of the clusters have the reduced X2 values smaller than 2, the TIS model fails in the fitting of the X-ray surface brightness profiles of clusters in the sense that 38 out of the 45 clusters show X2 > 2. This may constitute a challenge for the universality of the TIS model unless the present analysis is seriously contaminated by other uncertainties including the negligence of non-gravitational heating processes and the unconventional sampling of the X-ray data.展开更多

We base our reassessment on the clusters' luminosi- ties (an observational quantity) rather than their masses (a derived quantity), and confirm conclusively that the galaxy's starburst-ring clusters--and particularly the youngest subsample, log(t yr-1) ≤7.2- show evidence of a turnover in the cluster luminosity function well above the 90% completeness limit adopted to ensure the reliability of our results. This confirmation emphasizes the unique conundrum posed by this unusual cluster population.展开更多

Until several decades ago, star clusters were believed to be ideal laboratories for studies of simple stellar populations (SSPs). However, discoveries of multiple stellar populations in Galactic globular clus- ters have expanded our view on stellar populations in star clusters. They have simultaneously generated a number of controversies, particularly as to whether young star clusters may have the same origin as old globular clusters. In addition, extensive studies have revealed that the SSP scenario does not seem to hold for some intermediate-age and young star clusters either, thus making the origin of multiple stellar popu- lations in star clusters even more complicated. Stellar population anomalies in numerous star clusters are well-documented, implying that the notion of star clusters as true SSPs faces serious challenges. In this review, we focus on stellar populations in massive clusters with different ages. We present the history and progress of research in this active field, as well as some of the most recent improvements, including ob- servational results and scenarios that have been proposed to explain the observations. Although our current ability to determine the origin of multiple stellar populations in star clusters is unsatisfactory, we propose a number of promising projects that may contribute to a significantly improved understanding of this subject.展开更多

We consider four different approaches to derive the gas mass function and two different parameterizations of the DD relation, and find that they have very slight influences on the DD relation test and the relation is valid at the la confidence level. We also discuss the constraints on a andβ, which represent the effects of the shapes and colors of the light curves of SNIa, respectively.
