Rockhead profile is an important part of geological profiles and can have significant impacts on some geotechnical engineering practice,and thus,it is necessary to establish a useful method to reverse the rockhead pro...Rockhead profile is an important part of geological profiles and can have significant impacts on some geotechnical engineering practice,and thus,it is necessary to establish a useful method to reverse the rockhead profile using site investigation results.As a general method to reflect the spatial distribution of geo-material properties based on field measurements,the conditional random field(CRF)was improved in this paper to simulate rockhead profiles.Besides,in geotechnical engineering practice,measurements are generally limited due to the limitations of budget and time so that the estimation of the mean value can have uncertainty to some extent.As the Bayesian theory can effectively combine the measurements and prior information to deal with uncertainty,CRF was implemented with the aid of the Bayesian framework in this study.More importantly,this simulation procedure is achieved as an analytical solution to avoid the time-consuming sampling work.The results show that the proposed method can provide a reasonable estimation about the rockhead depth at various locations against measurement data and as a result,the subjectivity in determining prior mean can be minimized.Finally,both the measurement data and selection of hyper-parameters in the proposed method can affect the simulated rockhead profiles,while the influence of the latter is less significant than that of the former.展开更多

Understanding the probabilistic nature of brittle materials due to inherent dispersions in their mechanical properties is important to assess their reliability and safety for sensitive engineering applications.This is...Understanding the probabilistic nature of brittle materials due to inherent dispersions in their mechanical properties is important to assess their reliability and safety for sensitive engineering applications.This is all the more important when elements composed of brittle materials are exposed to dynamic environments,resulting in catastrophic fatigue failures.The authors propose the application of a non-intrusive polynomial chaos expansion method for probabilistic studies on brittle materials undergoing fatigue fracture when geometrical parameters and material properties are random independent variables.Understanding the probabilistic nature of fatigue fracture in brittle materials is crucial for ensuring the reliability and safety of engineering structures subjected to cyclic loading.Crack growth is modelled using a phase-field approach within a finite element framework.For modelling fatigue,fracture resistance is progressively degraded by modifying the regularised free energy functional using a fatigue degradation function.Number of cycles to failure is treated as the dependent variable of interest and is estimated within acceptable limits due to the randomness in independent properties.Multiple 2D benchmark problems are solved to demonstrate the ability of this approach to predict the dependent variable responses with significantly fewer simulations than the Monte Carlo method.This proposed approach can accurately predict results typically obtained through 105 or more runs in Monte Carlo simulations with a reduction of up to three orders of magnitude in required runs.The independent random variables’sensitivity to the system response is determined using Sobol’indices.The proposed approach has low computational overhead and can be useful for computationally intensive problems requiring rapid decision-making in sensitive applications like aerospace,nuclear and biomedical engineering.The technique does not require reformulating existing finite element code and can perform the stochastic study by direct pre/展开更多
This study introduces a new approach utilizing an interval finite element method combined with a bilevel Kriging model to determine the bounds of structural responses in the presence of spatial uncertainties.A notable...This study introduces a new approach utilizing an interval finite element method combined with a bilevel Kriging model to determine the bounds of structural responses in the presence of spatial uncertainties.A notable benefit of this approach is its ability to determine the response bounds across all degrees of freedom with a small sample size,which means that it has high efficiency.Firstly,the spatially varying uncertain parameters are quantified using an interval field model,which is described by a series of standard interval variables within a truncated interval Karhunen-Loe`ve(K-L)series expansion.Secondly,considering that the bound of structural response is a function of spatial position with the property of continuity,a surrogate model for the response bound is constructed,namely the first-level Kriging model.The training samples required for this surrogate model are obtained by establishing the second-level Kriging model.The second-level Kriging model is established to describe the structural responses at particular locations relative to the interval variables so as to facilitate the upper and lower bounds of the node response required by the first-level Kriging model.Finally,the accuracy and effectiveness of the method are verified through examples.展开更多
