Purpose/Aim: To assess simple means of measuring pressure under different nosebands with a view to their adoption as scientific methodology. Method: Horses (n = 7) were fitted with five different bridles (A-E). Pressure distribution and intensity were measured using colour sensitive film (Fujifilm LLLW), assessing the level of pressure and distribution across the surface of the nosebands, as assessed and ranked by independent assessors. A CURO system was also used to measure pressure in real-time under nosebands whilst riding. Results: The colour-sensitive film for D & B were ranked 1st and 2nd, respectively. Regularity of pressure overall showed a statistical difference between nosebands (A & B significantly more unregular than the others). Pressure measurements revealed significantly different means (all P Conclusions: Pressures under nosebands can reach levels that appear capable of inflicting tissue damage, hence bridles and nosebands should be assessed using scientific methodology and not based on arbitrary and subjective criteria, as is currently the case.展开更多

His legend has been circulating in various forms since the twelfth century. In the context of the emerging women-authored tanci narratives and the political disorder of late 19th century China, this article examines how the gentry woman author Zhou Yingfang (1829-95) enriches the narratives of Yue Fei by inserting a number of domestic themes into her tanci adaptation. She redefines the virtues of both genders and expects transformed family dynamics. In considering scholarly interpretations of the tanci in the modem period, this article also argues that the May Fourth scholars tended to neglect and/or suppress Zhou Yingfang's gendered consciousness in her alternative imagination of history.展开更多

It centers on case studies of the concubines in the Guo and Zhang families. Zhen Daya, who marries Guo Lingyun, builds an individual identity as a chaste, talented and determined "career woman" through her pursuit of a self-determined marriage Zhen Xiaoya, Zhang Yishao's concubine, establishes her subjectivity by following the cult of chastity. By creating such a character, the female writer mocks the conventions of scholar-beauty romances and rethinks the contemporary tradition of romance and marriage. The last case is the author's strikingly sympathetic treatment of an unchaste girl, Bao Xiang'er. Although the multiple layers of voices all agree that Xiang'er is totally inappropriate and immoral according to traditional Confucian values, she, instead of being punished, still ends up being incorporated into Yishao's family and is granted a son. These cases allow us to reevaluate Cheng Huiying, a female writer, and her views of women's autonomy in determining their own marriages. They anticipate, either through fantasy or some level of reality, the concept of "free love" (ziyou lian 'ai) so central to the May Fourth conceptions of modem women.展开更多

Methods: A total of 468 healthy college student volunteers received moxibustion at the eight confluent points in three different periods of time, i.e. Chen (7:00-9:00), Wu (11:00-13:00) and Xu (19:00-21:00). The thermal pain threshold latency was adopted to measure the changes in pain threshold of the eight confluent points under different conditions (different periods of time, different genders, different acupoints and different states of the acupoints) based on Fei Teng Ba Fa. Results: Finally, thirty subjects dropped out and 438 subjects were included. The comparison of thermal pain threshold latencies of the eight confluent points in the same opening or closing state based on Fei Teng Ba Fa: latencies of the closing points and adjunct points were significantly different in different periods of time (P〈0.05), the latencies of the males were significantly longer than those of the females (P〈0.05); there was no significant difference in the latency between the left and right sides (P〉0.05); in the female group, there was a significant difference in the latency between the lower-limb points and the upper-limb points (P〈0.05). The comparison of thermal point threshold latencies of the eight confluent points in different opening or closing state: in the period of Wu (11:00-13:00), the latencies of the opening points were significantly longer than those of the closing points and adjunct points (P〈0.05); for men, their opening and closing points had significantly longer thermal pain threshold latencies than their adjunct points (P〈0.05); despite the gender, the latencies of the upper limb opening and closing points were significantly longer than the latency of the adjunct points (P〈0.05); in the female group, the latencies of the lower-limb ope展开更多

This study looks at two components of the Yue Fei story--patriotic tattoos, and tattooed generals--and examines their meaning in the broader stretch of Song dynasty history. Yue Eei was not the Song dynasty's only tattooed general who came to a tragic end. The Northern Song's Di Qing was a tattooed soldier whose military merit allowed him to rise to the highest levels of power in the empire. Di Qing's story makes it clear that tattooed generals were objects of suspicion and ridicule at court due to their military tattoos, a trait that linked them to the criminals and lower class men that manned the Song armies. Though military tattoos sometimes had a loyalist ring to them, they were carried out on a mass scale, and were a characteristic of coercion rather than fervent loyalism. This study shows that underneath the nationalist historical narrative of the Song dynasty, of which Yue Eel is a famous example, there lies a different story of social conflict within the Song state. Rather than a story of Chinese fighting non-Chinese and of traitorous and cowardly officials struggling with loyal patriots, this study offers a narrative of a social conflict between high-born clear-skinned officials and low-born tattooed military men.展开更多
