To resolve the strength-ductility trade-off problem for high-strength Mg alloys,we prepared a high performance Mg-8Gd-3Y-0.5 Zr(wt%)alloy with yield strength of 371 MPa,ultimate tensile strength of 419MPa and elongati...To resolve the strength-ductility trade-off problem for high-strength Mg alloys,we prepared a high performance Mg-8Gd-3Y-0.5 Zr(wt%)alloy with yield strength of 371 MPa,ultimate tensile strength of 419MPa and elongation of 15.8%.The processing route involves extrusion,pre-deformation and aging,which leads to a bimodal structure and nano-precipitates.Back-stress originated from the deformationincompatibility in the bimodal-structure alloy can improve ductility.In addition,dislocation density in coarse grains increased during the pre-deformation strain of 2%,and the dislocations in coarse grains can promote the formation of chain-like nano-precipitates during aging treatment.The chain-like nanoprecipitates can act as barriers for dislocations slip and the existing mobile dislocations enable good ductility.展开更多
This article presents experimental results of steel-timber-steel(STS)joints loaded parallel to grain.Eight groups of specimens were designed,and tensile tests were performed.The fastener types and fastener numbers wer...This article presents experimental results of steel-timber-steel(STS)joints loaded parallel to grain.Eight groups of specimens were designed,and tensile tests were performed.The fastener types and fastener numbers were considered to evaluate the tensile strengths and ductility performances of the STS joints.The screws with 6 mm diameter and the innovative steel-tubes with 18 mm diameter were adopted as connecting fasteners.The experimental results were discussed in terms of yielding and ultimate strengths,slip stiffness,and ductility factors.The ductility classification and failure mechanisms of each group of specimens were analyzed.It was demonstrated that the STS joint with large diameter steel-tubes showed acceptable ductility,which was close to the ductility of the STS joint with small diameter screws,thanks to the hollow structure of the steel-tube.The theoretical strengths of various failure modes for the joints with small diameter screws or large diameter steel-tubes were calculated and compared with the experimental results.The ductile performance of the STS joint was discussed by comparing the theoretical strengths of various failure modes.The effective number of the STS joint with multifasteners was also analyzed by considering the failure mechanisms in aspects of tensile strength and slip stiffness.展开更多
Developing ductile bulk metallic glasses(BMGs)can benefit from an in-depth understanding of the structure-property relation during plastic deformation.However,endowing BMGs with tensile ductility in BMGs needs to reve...Developing ductile bulk metallic glasses(BMGs)can benefit from an in-depth understanding of the structure-property relation during plastic deformation.However,endowing BMGs with tensile ductility in BMGs needs to reveal the response of critical structure units during deformation.Here,we report the experimental results of an in-situ synchrotron high-energy X-ray study of a Zr-based BMG under uniaxial tension after preprocessing by canning compression of the three-dimensional compressive stress state.It is revealed that the canning-compressed BMG(CC-BMG)sample has better tensile ductility and higher ultimate strength than the as-cast sample,which possesses heterogeneous and loosely packed local struc-tures on medium-range scales.The experimental results revealed two stages of plastic deformation in the CC-BMGs compared with one stage of plastic deformation in the as-cast BMG.Moreover,the shift in the first sharp diffraction peak along the tension direction for the canning-compressed sample is substan-tially more pronounced than that of the as-cast sample.Furthermore,the real-space analysis illustrates a competition mechanism between the 2-atom and 3-atom connection modes on medium-range order during the plastic deformation of the CC-BMG.Additionally,the ordering on the medium-range scale de-creases in the first plastic deformation stage but increases in the second plastic deformation stage.There-fore,a structural crossover phenomenon occurs in the CC-BMG during plastic deformation.Our results demonstrate a structure-property correlation for the CC-BMGs of heterogeneous medium-range ordered structures,which may be beneficial for endowing BMGs with ductility based on medium-range order engineering techniques.展开更多
