Fossilized caryopses (or grains) of foxtail millet (Setaria italica) and broomcorn millet (Panicum miliaceum) are important archaeobotanical materials for the study of early human agricultural activities.The morpholog...Fossilized caryopses (or grains) of foxtail millet (Setaria italica) and broomcorn millet (Panicum miliaceum) are important archaeobotanical materials for the study of early human agricultural activities.The morphology and ultrastructural characteristics of carbonized modern millets caryopses treated in a drying oven and burning in a field were investigated at different temperatures to study how fossilized millets are formed.The caryopses shrank gradually at temperatures below 200°C,and starch granules in the endosperm retained their crystalline structure.At 250°C the foxtail millet caryopses expanded,whereas the broomcorn millet caryopses were greatly deformed.At this temperature,the structure of the starch granules of both millets became amorphous.At 300°C the caryopses partially turned to ash and became porous,and the ultrastructure of the starch granules was transformed into alveolate cavities.Fossil caryopses from the prehistoric storage cellar at the Beiniu Site retained their crystalline structure and were formed by the dehydrating effect of carbonization,indicating that water molecules were not involved in the starch crystallization.The results of a field burning experiment demonstrated that the ultrastructure of carbonized caryopses placed on the ground under the fire was amorphous.The amorphous ultrastructure of the carbonized caryopses recovered from the archaeological layers is consistent with the expected structure of caryopses that have been carbonized at 250°C.Therefore,we suggest that the recovered caryopses were formed at about 250°C by baking rather than by burning in an open fire.展开更多
The strength development law of γ-type dicalcium silicate (γ-C_(2)S) under different carbonation processes was investigated,and the carbonation mechanism of γ-C_(2)S under the action of NH_(4)HCO_(3) was clarified ...The strength development law of γ-type dicalcium silicate (γ-C_(2)S) under different carbonation processes was investigated,and the carbonation mechanism of γ-C_(2)S under the action of NH_(4)HCO_(3) was clarified by using a wide range of test methods,including XRD and SEM.A method of saturated NH_(4)HCO_(3) solution as a curing agent was identified to improve the carbonation efficiency and enhance the carbonation degree of γ-C_(2)S,and then a high-strength carbonated specimen was obtained.Microhardness analysis and SEM morphology analysis were conducted on the carbonised specimens obtained under atmospheric pressure carbonisation conditions using the curing agent.It was found that γ-C_(2)S could perform carbonisation well under atmospheric pressure,which promoted the carbonisation efficiency and decreased the carbonisation cost simultaneously.Therefore,a new carbonisation process solution was proposed for the rapid carbonisation of γ-C_(2)S.展开更多
Ultrafine or nano-sized of tungsten carbide(WC)is the key material to prepare ultrafine grained cemented carbides.In this paper,nano-sized WC powders were directly prepared by using industrial nano-needle violet tungs...Ultrafine or nano-sized of tungsten carbide(WC)is the key material to prepare ultrafine grained cemented carbides.In this paper,nano-sized WC powders were directly prepared by using industrial nano-needle violet tungsten oxide(WO2.72)as the raw material,a fluidized bed as the reactor,and CO as the carbonization gas.The relationship between particle sizes and reaction temperatures,residence times,atmospheres has been investigated systematically.In addition,the physical–chemical indexes(such as residual oxygen,total carbon and free carbon)of the products were measured.The results indicated that the particle size of WC increased with the increase of temperature from 800 to 950°C.As the residence time increased,the particle size decreased gradually,and then increased due to slight sintering.The introduction of hydrogen reduced the carbonization rate,and is not beneficial to obtaining nano-sized WC.Products that satisfy the standard were obtained when WO2.72 reacted with CO at 850°C,900°C and 950°C for 3.0 h,2.5 h and 2.0 h,respectively.The particle sizes of the three samples calculated from the specific surface area were 46.4 nm,53.2 nm and 52.1 nm,respectively.展开更多
