As a patriotic scientist, Dejun Yu refused a position in Britain and returned to China without hesitation in 1950. He devoted his whole life to the botanical sciences. His contributions went far beyond advancing botany, however, extending to construction of botanical gardens and the exploration of plant resources, especially fruit trees in China.
