It has been proposed by Froude in the 19th century and used from then on. Behind it there is a quadratic model [θ|θ|] for the damping and a subsequent equivalent linearization. Probably all model basin in the world follows this approach to assess the damping from a methods to get the P1-P2 coefficients. This is very applied to any kind of hull. However, it has become decay test. This is well documented and so is the general in the sense that in principle, it could be clear that for hull with a flat bottom such as a very large crude carrier (VLCC), this approach may lead to confusing results such as negative P2. Faced with this, the work presents a completely new idea. Avoiding the polynomial approximation, the basic attitude is to devise two regions from the decaying test response. The first, called the large amplitude response region yields a larger damping, probably due to the large bilge keel vortices that are attracted to the hull flat bottom. The second is the small amplitude response region where the vortices are not attracted to the bottom but travels approximately 45° sidewise. These observations has led to a new approach called the bi-linear approach as discussed in the work after analyzing several (many) model test results. In fact, a new modified bi-linear approach is ultimately proposed after the understanding of a transition region instead of a transition angle.展开更多

It is a successful estimation strategy if the predicted points fall in the target area. If the object makes a sudden maneuvering, the prediction may get out of the target area easily which may make the tracking system lose the object. The aim is to investigate the admissible maximum object maneuvering intensity, which is characterized as model noise variance, for such kind of tracking system. Firstly, the concept of stochastic passage characteristics over the boundary of target area and their relationship with prediction error variance are described. Secondly, the consistency among the indices of regional pole, prediction error variance and stochastic passage characteristics is analyzed. Thirdly, the multi-indices constraints are characterized by a set of bi-linear matrix inequalities (BMIs). Then, the admissible maximum model noise variance and the satisfactory estimation strategy are presented by iteratively solving linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) to approximate BMIs. Finally, a numerical example is proposed to demonstrate the obtained resuits.展开更多

We develop a bi-linear algorithm, named ECO-Trade to generate the near-optimal schedules of the households’ loads, storage and energy sources. The algorithm also facilitates Peer-to-Peer (P2P) energy trading among the smart homes in a community microgrid. However, P2P trading potentially results in an unfair cost distribution among the participating households. To the best of our knowledge, the ECO-Trade algorithm is the first near-optimal cost optimization algorithm which considers the unfair cost distribution problem for a Demand Side Management (DSM) system coordinated with P2P energy trading. It also solves the time complexity problem of our previously proposed optimal model. Our results show that the solution time of the ECO-Trade algorithm is mostly less than a minute. It also shows that 97% of the solutions generated by the ECO-Trade algorithm are optimal solutions. Furthermore, we analyze the solutions and identify that the algorithm sometimes gets trapped at a local minimum because it alternately sets the microgrid price and quantity as constants. Finally, we describe the reasons of the cost increase by a local minimum and analyze its impact on cost optimization.展开更多

The cross-sectional area of the elements is set to have the actual distribution measured by 3D laser scanner system. The variable factor in the analysis is the length of the elements. The analysis results show that the length of the elements has a major influence on the deformation capacity after yielding. The calculated stress-strain curves, obtained using the elements with a length that is 2 times the bar diameter, are in good agreement with the tensile test results. The calculated stress-strain curves are modeled using a bi-linear model to facilitate the FEA (finite element analysis) of an overall concrete structure. From the analysis results, both the tensile and yield strengths decrease in proportion to the reduction of the minimum cross-sectional area of corroded bars. The ultimate strain has a remarkable decrement as the reduction of the minimum cross-sectional area. Formulas for determining these values are proposed as a function of the decrement ratio of the minimum cross-sectional area of a corroded bar.展开更多
