Under the guidance of the approach which integrates molecular networking,MolNetEnhancer and Net-work Annotation Propagation(NAP),daphnaltaicanoids A and B(1 and 2)with unprecedented 9-oxa-tetracyclo[6.6.1.0^(2,6).0^(8...Under the guidance of the approach which integrates molecular networking,MolNetEnhancer and Net-work Annotation Propagation(NAP),daphnaltaicanoids A and B(1 and 2)with unprecedented 9-oxa-tetracyclo[6.6.1.0^(2,6).0^(8,13)]pentadecane and tetracyclo[5.3.0.1^(2,5).2^(4,11)]tridecane central frameworks were iso-lated from Daphne altaica Pall.,representing two types of unparalleled meroterpenoid cores.Their struc-tures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis,nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)calcula-tions,DP4+analysis and electronic circular dichroism(ECD)calculations.The plausible biosynthetic path-ways for 1 and 2 were postulated.Biologically,2 exerted potent neuroprotective activities which were su-perior to trolox at 12.5 and 25μmol/L.Moreover,1 and 2 exhibited more noticeable acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activities than donepezil.Molecular docking simulations were performed to explore the inter-molecular interaction of compounds 1 and 2 with acetylcholinesterase.The bioactivity evaluation results highlight the prospects of 1 and 2 as a novel category of neurological agents.展开更多
Air pollution remains a serious environmental and social problem in many big cities in the world.How to predict and estimate the risk of extreme air pollution is unsettled yet.This study tries to provide a solution to...Air pollution remains a serious environmental and social problem in many big cities in the world.How to predict and estimate the risk of extreme air pollution is unsettled yet.This study tries to provide a solution to this challenge by examining the winter PM_(2.5)concentration in Beijing based on the UNprecedented Simulation of Extremes with ENsembles(UNSEEN)method.The PM_(2.5)concentration observations in Beijing,Japanese 55-yr reanalysis data,and the Met Office near term climate prediction system(DePreSys3a)large ensemble simulations are used,and 10,000proxy series are generated with the model fidelity test.It is found that in Beijing,the main meteorological driver of PM_(2.5)concentration is monthly 850-hPa meridional wind(V850).Although the skill in prediction of V850 is low on seasonal and longer timescales,based on the UNSEEN,we use large ensemble of initialized climate simulations of V850 to estimate the current chance and risk of unprecedented PM_(2.5)concentration in Beijing.We unravel that there is a 3%(2.1%–3.9%)chance of unprecedented low monthly V850 corresponding to high PM_(2.5)in each winter,within the 95%range,calculated by bootstrap resampling of the data.Moreover,we use the relationship between air quality and winds to remove the meridional wind influence from the observed record,and find that anthropogenic intervention appears to have reduced the risk of extreme PM_(2.5)in Beijing in recent years.展开更多

The goal of the paper is to conduct an exploratory review and analyses of the dynamics of the pandemic focusing on two themes:pandemic morbidity and vulnerable populations.Method:Review of literature,anecdotal evidenc...The goal of the paper is to conduct an exploratory review and analyses of the dynamics of the pandemic focusing on two themes:pandemic morbidity and vulnerable populations.Method:Review of literature,anecdotal evidence,and reports on the morbidity of COVID-19;including scope of its devastating effects in selected countries.Findings:The devastating effects of the coronavirus are felt across different vulnerable populations.These include the elderly,front line workers,marginalized communities,visible minorities,and more.Inadequate and sometimes conflicting remarks by“experts”have only contributed in exacerbating the confusion in the general population.However,compassion and empathy from different communities have had positive effects on mitigating some of the health outcomes like mental health and other health-related effects of the pandemic.Institutional support needs to be strengthened,especially with regard to individual risks and supply chain coordination:personal protection equipment(PPE),masks,swabs,reagents,etc.The challenge in Africa is especially daunting,because of limited and inadequate financial resources and infrastructure,as confirmed by the health budget allocations as a percentage of their respective GDP(gross domestic product).Discussion:The effects of the COVID-19 are producing unprecedented and catastrophic outcomes in many countries.These have been exacerbated by the level of unpreparedness and inadequate degrees of prevention and intervention strategies.With a few exceptions,the common and current intervention approach is driven by many unknowns including compilation of relevant reliable and compelling data sets.Vulnerable communities continue to suffer most:a situation that is highlighted in this essay as one attempt to remind institutions of their duty to provide appropriate support,including compassion and empathy to these populations.The repercussions of no or inadequate action are numerous,significant,and mind-boggling with unpredictable future outcomes and possible dire consequences.T展开更多
