Among the increasing inquiries into the relation of"interality"with various disciplines,interality and rhetoric have rarely been connected directly.This essay attempts to examine interality in rhetorical fig...Among the increasing inquiries into the relation of"interality"with various disciplines,interality and rhetoric have rarely been connected directly.This essay attempts to examine interality in rhetorical figures by focusing on how interality works in metaphor under the two criteria of openness and negotiation so as to establish an interality hierarchy.This assumed metaphor interality hierarchy is justified as Form 3(vehicle present,tenor implied)>Form 2(tenor present,vehicle implied)>Form 1(tenor and vehicle both present).By applying this interality hierarchy to analyzing metaphors in the imaginative classic of Chuang Tzu,we find that its rich metaphors in all three forms are well weaved to generate appropriate interality,leaving readers in the adequate and comfortable space of poetry and eloquence.This research is expected not only to theorize the specific nature and function of interality in metaphor,but offer implications for exploring interality in other rhetorical figures as well.展开更多

This study explored the mechanism on how volunteers as rationalists use rationalism during their cognitive appraisal process when dealing with emotional events in their social helping behavior such as international re...This study explored the mechanism on how volunteers as rationalists use rationalism during their cognitive appraisal process when dealing with emotional events in their social helping behavior such as international rescue events.The authors used the triangulation method to include three studies(Study 1 is a qualitative research which explored ways of TCF leader’s inspiring their volunteer workers;Study 2 is a quantitative research on the decision-making process of volunteer individuals involving in international rescue activities;Study 3 is a quantitative research on individuals’motivation for joining social helping behavior)for validation of Tzu Chi Foundation(TCF),which is a famous non-profit organization worldwide,to prove that volunteers as rationalists rely on the reasonable cognitive appraisal method to substantially evaluate the necessity of social helping behavior,including their emotional responses and arousals.Economic evaluation theory was used to depict volunteers as volunteers as rationalists’way of cognitive appraisal perspective towards emotional events such as international rescue cases or when participating in activities by non-profit organizations.Accordingly,this study found that volunteers as rationalists adhere to the principles of altruism,egoism,compensation,and reciprocity as part of their cognitive appraisal when responding to emotional situations.The researchfindings of this study depicted the volunteers’behavioral intention as volunteers as rationalists in responding to emotional events in the form of NPO helping behaviors and international rescue events.Social helping behaviors often rely on people’s emotional compassion and empathy at the beginning,but social helping behaviors cannot rely solely on emotional support.To create long-term support for non-profit organizations’action plans,it is still neces-sary to plan rationally,turning the actions of volunteers into reasonable plans.In this way,even if the volun-teers have experienced many difficulties during devotion,h展开更多

As the quintessence of traditional Chinese culture,Chuang Tzu and other Chinese literary classics have been translated and introduced to many Western countries in succession,arousing Western attention and thoughts on ...As the quintessence of traditional Chinese culture,Chuang Tzu and other Chinese literary classics have been translated and introduced to many Western countries in succession,arousing Western attention and thoughts on Chinese culture.Since Chuang Tzu was introduced to Germany by sinologists and missionaries at the end of the nineteenth century,it has triggered a continuous upsurge of interest in its reading and research,which has solidified into a spiritual mirror aimed at fully representing traditional Chinese culture.From this translation and research history of Chuang Tzu in Germany,a general pattern of"translation lagging behind research"is illustrated.In this process,Germany’s interpretation and acceptance of Chuang Tzu is not only conducted from the perspective of literature and philosophy,but widely extends to other academic realms,including natural science,highlighting its distinct"fusion"and"cross-boundary"features.Examining the cross-cultural presentation and reappearance of Chuang Tzu in Germany is of great enlightening significance to the construction of a translation model for Chinese classics.Thus,a cooperative translation model in which domestic translators and foreign sinologists can draw on each other’s unique strengths during communication could be built.To this end,in the selection of translated classics,translators should pay attention to their own compatibility with the cultural background of the target countries to avoid invalid translation,which might even cause cultural conflicts.Consequently,the translation of Chinese classics will be shifted closer towards their purest original intended purposes.展开更多
