Post-stroke Antihypertensive Treatment Study (PATS) was a randomized, double-blind and placebo-controlled trial, which aimed at determining whether antihypertensive treatment could reduce the risk of fatal and nonfata...Post-stroke Antihypertensive Treatment Study (PATS) was a randomized, double-blind and placebo-controlled trial, which aimed at determining whether antihypertensive treatment could reduce the risk of fatal and nonfatal stroke incidence in patients with a history of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TLA). 5 665 patients were randomized by a sealed envelope system. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) ranged from 80 to 280 mm Hg and diastolic (DBP) from 50 to 150 mmHg. The average SBP was 154 mmHg and average DBP 93 mmHg. The mean age was 60 years. Among the patients, women accounted for 28%. In 71% the latest stroke was ischemic. Average follow-up approximated to 2 years. The three-year average SBP was 149 mmHg for the placebo group and 144 mmHg for the indapamide treatment group, and the three-year DBP was 89 mmHg and 87 mmHg respectively. The three-year first incidence of fatal and nonfatal stroke was 12.3 per 100 patients placebo treatment and 9.4 per 100 with indapamide. The relative risk by proportional hazards regression analysis was 0.71 (P=0.0009). For deaths from all causes, the relative risk was 0.91. (P>0.05). The findings of this trial indicate that in patients with a history of stroke or TLA, blood pressure reduction of 5 / 2 mmHg with 2.5 mg indapamide reduced the first incidence of fatal and nonfatal stroke by 29%, with three-year absolute benefit of 29 events per 1000 participants.展开更多

Increasing rice yield is therefore crucial for solving food shortage problem, ensuring food secruity, and reducing poverty. Given the vast population and limited per capita cultivated land in China, meeting food demands by increasing the yield per unit area with the aid of advanced sciences and technologies would be the only option. Several alternative measures for increasing crop yield, such as building water conservancy facilities, increasing fertilizer application, improving soil texture, forming interrelated cultivation techniques, more effective controlling of pests and diseases, and using of elite varieties, have been undertaken. Among these alternative measures, adopting elite varieties, particularly popularizing super hybrid rice, proves to be the most economical and effective option.展开更多

It was excavated in 1997, which resulted in the revelation of 115 Neolithic tombs and many ash-pits, house-foundations and fireplaces and the discovery of pottery, jade, stone and bone artifacts and quantities of animal remains. The cultural deposits can he divided into the upper, middle and lower layers, which are all simple in cultural content and represent the late, middle and upper phases respectively. The cultural aspect shows strong regional features distinctly different from the contemporary cultures of adjacent areas, which suggests that the remains can he named “Xuecheng cultural type. ” Chronologically, the early phase roughly corresponds to the middle and late Majiahang culture, the middle phase to the second period of Beiyinyangying culture or a little earlier than it, and the late phase to the middle and late Songze culture.展开更多

A 'Standard' ocean state is introduced into the equations of the model and the perturbed thermodynamic variables are used in the modlc's calculations. Both a free upper surface and a bottom topography are included in the model and a sigma coordinate is used to normalize the model's vertical component. The model has four unevenly-spaced layers and 4 × 5 horizontal resolution based on C-grid system. The finite-difference scheme of the model is designed to conserve the gross available energy in order to avoid fictitious energy generation or decay.The model has been tested in response to the annual mean surface wind stress, sea level air pressure and sea level air temperature as a preliminary step to its further improvement and its coupling with a global atmospheric general circulation model. The work covered an area of more than 1,300 sq m, revealed 11 spots of house-foundation, well, small yard,clay-refining pool and ash-pit remains, and discovered above 600 intact and restorable articles of greenish-white-glazed, egg-white-glazed, black-glazed and blue-and-white porcelain wares from the Song, Yuan and Ming periods. The excavation clarified relatively direct stratigraphic evidence on the typological evolution of the vessels typical of the Song and Yuan periods and threw light on a batch of egg-white-glazed “shu fu” porcelain objects of the early Yuan and some inscribed porcelain-making implements.展开更多

It can further be inferred that the owner of the tomb might have been the Chu crown prince's teacher, the documents from there were teaching material for the prince, and the tomb and bamboo slips go back to a time earlier than 303 BC.展开更多

In this paper, a portable TDLAS system built specifically for long time monitoring methane in the atmosphere is introduced. The detection limit is below 100 ppb that is enough for the monitoring of ambient methane, and the long time monitoring results obtained in Beijing are given, which is well coincident with that of the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy.展开更多
The reform of the housing system in Shanghai has unexpectedly given rise to a self-governed property owners’ collective supervisory system, primarily in the form of Property Owners’ Supervisory Council (POSC), which...The reform of the housing system in Shanghai has unexpectedly given rise to a self-governed property owners’ collective supervisory system, primarily in the form of Property Owners’ Supervisory Council (POSC), which has picked up some of the government’s administrative functions. Although this new, institutionalized management model has theoretically made democratic managerial participation at the grassroots level possible, it has brought about endless problems, overt and covert, shortly after its appearance, some of which are even alarming. A comprehensive analysis of the data collected over a long period of time has led to the conclusion that this system is a failure, attributable to the overt factor related to skills in reality and the covert “priori” factor that is masked by the former. The existence of such “priori” factor once again demonstrates the deep-rooted, traditional managerial logic: Positive operations is society need only to depend upon individuals’ unstable self-disciplined morality rather than to build a system. The current paper points out that any change in the socioeconomic structure that has long been subject to the power of politics is to inevitably incur a corresponding global structural accommodation, including politics itself. To respond to the two factors for the failure, system building in the two overlapping areas is a must.展开更多

The pathogenic mechanisms underlying tobaccorelated cancers are well characterized and efective programs have led to a decline in smoking and related cancers, but there is a global epidemic of obesity without a clear understanding of how obesity causes cancer. Obesity is heterogeneous, and approximately 25% of obese individuals remain healthy(metabolically healthy obese, MHO), so which fat deposition(subcutaneous versus visceral, adipose versus ectopic) is "malignant"? What is the mechanism of carcinogenesis? Is it by metabolic dysregulation or chronic inflammation? Through which chemokines/genes/signaling pathways does adipose tissue influence carcinogenesis? Can selective inhibition of these pathways uncouple obesity from cancers? Do all obesity related cancers(ORCs) share a molecular signature? Are there common(overlapping) genetic loci that make individuals susceptible to obesity, metabolic syndrome, and cancers? Can we identify precursor lesions of ORCs and will early intervention of high risk individuals alter the natural history? It appears unlikely that the obesity epidemic will be controlled anytime soon; answers to these questions will help to reduce the adverse efect of obesity on human condition.展开更多
A nation-wide survey of blood pressure (BP) and high BP was made in China in 1991, using standardized methods and covering 950 356 men and women aged 15 years and above, from 30 provinces, autonomous regions, and muni...A nation-wide survey of blood pressure (BP) and high BP was made in China in 1991, using standardized methods and covering 950 356 men and women aged 15 years and above, from 30 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities. The purpose of the study was to estimate the prevalence and the status of awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension. The overall prevalence rate of hypertension defined as systolic BP> 140 or diastolic BP> 90 mmHg or currently on antihypertensive medication was 13.6%, and was higher in urban (16.3%) than in rural (11.1%) setting. The rate was 6.6% if a BP cut-point of 160 / 95 mmHg was used. Rates were low in younger age-groups but rose sharply after age 45. The total number of hypertensives in 1990 was estimated to be close to 90 millions. Of all hypertensives, about 1/4 were aware of their high BP, half of these were on medication, and only 3% had their BP controlled. All the rates were higher if the BP cut-point was 160 / 95 mmHg. Higher rates were found in urban than rural setting and, to a lesser degree, for women than men. In conclusion, hypertension was found to be common in China, and the rates of awareness, drug treatment, and controlled BP were low, indicating an urgent need for developing a national program of treatment and prevention of high BP.展开更多

However, patients with aortic dissection may suffer adverse outcomes that lead to mortality and morbidity, such as stoke, re-dissection, myocardial infarction, and heart failure. One is to understand hardness microscopically and reveal the controlling f...Over the past several decades, great endeavors have been devoted to superhard materials research, among which two topics are of central focus. One is to understand hardness microscopically and reveal the controlling factors for superhardness, which can be used to guide the design of novel superhard crystals;the other is to synthesize superhard materials with enhanced comprehensive performance(i.e., hardness, fracture toughness,and thermal stability), with the ambition to synthesize materials harder than natural diamond. We proposed a microscopic understanding of the indentation hardness as the combined resistance of chemical bonds in a material to indentation, and established a microscopic hardness model for covalent and polar covalent crystals, which was further generalized to polycrystalline materials. Guided by the polycrystalline hardness model, we successfully synthesized nanotwinned cubic boron nitride and diamond bulks under high pressure and high temperature. These materials exhibit simultaneous improvement of hardness, fracture toughness, and thermal stability, designating a new direction for superhard materials research.展开更多

文摘On the lacquered eared-cup unearthed in 1995 from the No. 1 Chu tomb at Guodian, Jingmen, Hubei, there is the inscription “Donggong zhi shi 东宫之币.” Among the characters the “donggong” must refer to the crown prince of the Chu state, and the last character, in the light of the characteristics and evolutionary laws of similar phrases in inscriptions on oracle bones and bronzes as well as in those of the Eastern Zhou period, should be deciphered as the word “teacher.” So the whole inscription means the teacher of the Chu crown prince. It can further be inferred that the owner of the tomb might have been the Chu crown prince's teacher, the documents from there were teaching material for the prince, and the tomb and bamboo slips go back to a time earlier than 303 BC.
文摘The paper analyzes both the progress and problems in the western China developmentdrive over the past three years and attempts a tentative evaluation of the results of the drive.The authors hold that the western China development drive has been proceeding in anactive, orderly and steady fashion, and has achieved considerable success in the constructionof infrastructure, and improvement of ecological environment. However, there are stillmany problems. It has been slow in attracting non-governmental investment, in theimprovement of investment climate, regional industrialization and in opening up to theoutside world. It is, therefore, necessary to make adjustments to the western Chinadevelopment strategy during the remaining years of the Tenth Five-Year Plan period (2001-2005) and during the Eleventh Five-Year Plan period (2006-2010), make greater efforts inreform and opening up, improve the investment climate, accelerate the pace of industrializationand attract more non-governmental capital from at home and abroad.

文摘Tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) has been widely employed in atmospheric trace gases detection. In the measurement of these trace gases, harmonic detection combined with a multi-pass white cell could remarkably enhance the detection sensitivity. In this paper, a portable TDLAS system built specifically for long time monitoring methane in the atmosphere is introduced. The detection limit is below 100 ppb that is enough for the monitoring of ambient methane, and the long time monitoring results obtained in Beijing are given, which is well coincident with that of the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy.
文摘The reform of the housing system in Shanghai has unexpectedly given rise to a self-governed property owners’ collective supervisory system, primarily in the form of Property Owners’ Supervisory Council (POSC), which has picked up some of the government’s administrative functions. Although this new, institutionalized management model has theoretically made democratic managerial participation at the grassroots level possible, it has brought about endless problems, overt and covert, shortly after its appearance, some of which are even alarming. A comprehensive analysis of the data collected over a long period of time has led to the conclusion that this system is a failure, attributable to the overt factor related to skills in reality and the covert “priori” factor that is masked by the former. The existence of such “priori” factor once again demonstrates the deep-rooted, traditional managerial logic: Positive operations is society need only to depend upon individuals’ unstable self-disciplined morality rather than to build a system. The current paper points out that any change in the socioeconomic structure that has long been subject to the power of politics is to inevitably incur a corresponding global structural accommodation, including politics itself. To respond to the two factors for the failure, system building in the two overlapping areas is a must.
文摘Obesity is recognized as the second highest risk factor for cancer. The pathogenic mechanisms underlying tobaccorelated cancers are well characterized and efective programs have led to a decline in smoking and related cancers, but there is a global epidemic of obesity without a clear understanding of how obesity causes cancer. Obesity is heterogeneous, and approximately 25% of obese individuals remain healthy(metabolically healthy obese, MHO), so which fat deposition(subcutaneous versus visceral, adipose versus ectopic) is "malignant"? What is the mechanism of carcinogenesis? Is it by metabolic dysregulation or chronic inflammation? Through which chemokines/genes/signaling pathways does adipose tissue influence carcinogenesis? Can selective inhibition of these pathways uncouple obesity from cancers? Do all obesity related cancers(ORCs) share a molecular signature? Are there common(overlapping) genetic loci that make individuals susceptible to obesity, metabolic syndrome, and cancers? Can we identify precursor lesions of ORCs and will early intervention of high risk individuals alter the natural history? It appears unlikely that the obesity epidemic will be controlled anytime soon; answers to these questions will help to reduce the adverse efect of obesity on human condition.
文摘A nation-wide survey of blood pressure (BP) and high BP was made in China in 1991, using standardized methods and covering 950 356 men and women aged 15 years and above, from 30 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities. The purpose of the study was to estimate the prevalence and the status of awareness, treatment, and control of hypertension. The overall prevalence rate of hypertension defined as systolic BP> 140 or diastolic BP> 90 mmHg or currently on antihypertensive medication was 13.6%, and was higher in urban (16.3%) than in rural (11.1%) setting. The rate was 6.6% if a BP cut-point of 160 / 95 mmHg was used. Rates were low in younger age-groups but rose sharply after age 45. The total number of hypertensives in 1990 was estimated to be close to 90 millions. Of all hypertensives, about 1/4 were aware of their high BP, half of these were on medication, and only 3% had their BP controlled. All the rates were higher if the BP cut-point was 160 / 95 mmHg. Higher rates were found in urban than rural setting and, to a lesser degree, for women than men. In conclusion, hypertension was found to be common in China, and the rates of awareness, drug treatment, and controlled BP were low, indicating an urgent need for developing a national program of treatment and prevention of high BP.
文摘Aortic dissection is a life-threatening disease that can produce a variety of symptoms and complications. Patients at high risk for mortality, such as individuals with aortic regurgitation, cardiac tamponade, or myocardial infarction, should be treated by surgery as soon as possible, especially in cases with acute ascending aortic dissections (Stanford type A). However, patients with aortic dissection may suffer adverse outcomes that lead to mortality and morbidity, such as stoke, re-dissection, myocardial infarction, and heart failure. Patients with surgically treated acute type A aortic dissection show an 18.2% likelihood of stroke in early morbidity.

文摘Over the past several decades, great endeavors have been devoted to superhard materials research, among which two topics are of central focus. One is to understand hardness microscopically and reveal the controlling factors for superhardness, which can be used to guide the design of novel superhard crystals;the other is to synthesize superhard materials with enhanced comprehensive performance(i.e., hardness, fracture toughness,and thermal stability), with the ambition to synthesize materials harder than natural diamond. We proposed a microscopic understanding of the indentation hardness as the combined resistance of chemical bonds in a material to indentation, and established a microscopic hardness model for covalent and polar covalent crystals, which was further generalized to polycrystalline materials. Guided by the polycrystalline hardness model, we successfully synthesized nanotwinned cubic boron nitride and diamond bulks under high pressure and high temperature. These materials exhibit simultaneous improvement of hardness, fracture toughness, and thermal stability, designating a new direction for superhard materials research.
