Several preventive measures are generally used, including supplementing of oils in foods. Our objective was to compare the effects of Tetracarpidum conophorum oil (TC) and corn oil (CO) on serum lipid profiles of normal male rats. 42 Wistar rats were divided into 7 groups. Diets included TC oil (groups TC5, TC10 and TC20) and corn oil (groups CO5, CO10 and CO20) in proportions of 5%, 10% and 20%, with a control group (T). After 5 weeks of feeding, several parameters were measured during and after the study, including body weight, food intake and organ weights (kidney, liver and fat). Lipid profiles (total cholesterol, TG, HDL and LDL), glucose and protein levels were measured in the serum. The increase in body mass was inversely proportional to the amount of oil in the food. The decrease in body mass and adiposomatic index of group TC10 was significant (p < 0.05) compared with the other groups. The lowest glycaemia (64.17 ± 5.14 mg/dl) was noted with the diet containing 20% TC oil. A significant reduction in total cholesterol, LDL fraction and blood triglycerides was observed in the groups supplemented with TC and corn oils compared to controls. Results were also more beneficial for the TC10 group. HDL-cholesterol levels were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the oil-supplemented groups than in the control group. Castelli’s risk indices decrease significantly (p < 0.05) with increasing oil content for TC. The oils had no impact on blood protein contents. One can conclude that a diet containing 10% crude oil from TC kernels could prevent or alleviate cardiovascular diseases and glycemia.展开更多

Assays of biochemical reproductive parameters (total cholesterol, serum testosterone, FSH and LH) were carried out using Cypress and ELISA kits respectively. The chemical screening of the extract was conducted through tube reactions, the principle of which involves adding a reagent to a quantity of the extract, and subsequently observing the resulting reactions such as precipitation and color change. The results obtained showed that oral administration of the aqueous extract of Tetracarpidium conophorum (250 and 500 mg/kg) produced a significant increase (p Tetracarpidium conophorum kernels at the doses studied produced a very significant decrease in total cholesterol levels (p Tetracarpidium conophorum kernels could have hypocholesterolemic and steroidogenic potential. A study of the aqueous extract of Tetracarpidium conophorum on semen quality and oxidative stress parameters deserves to be conducted.展开更多

Objective: To evaluate the antidiabetic effects of Emilia coccinea (Ec) (Asteraceae), Scoparia dulcis (Sd) (Plantaginaceae) and Tetracarpidium conophorum (Tc) (Euphorbiaceae) aqueous extracts mixture (EcSdTc) in rats. Methodology: Single plant aqueous extracts (Ec, Sd and Tc) and their mixtures (EcSd, EcTc, SdTc and EcSdTc) (each at the doses of 125 and 250 mg/kg body weight respectively) were evaluated in acute administration on blood glucose in normal, glucose-overloaded and diabetic rats;then EcSdTc mixture was assessed in prolonged administration (21 days) on blood glucose, body weight, serum biochemical and antioxidant parameters in diabetic rats. Diabetes was induced by single intraperitoneal administration of streptozotocin (STZ;50 mg/kg), and glibenclamide (10 mg/kg) was used as standard drug. Results: In acute administration, EcTc250, EcSdTc125, SdTc250, SdTc125, EcSd250, and EcSdTc250 extracts mixtures reduced (p Conclusion: EcSdTc aqueous extracts mixture has potent hypoglycemic and antidiabetic effects, probably due to their bioactive compounds synergistic and/or additive actions, justifying its traditional use as alternative remedies.展开更多

These effects decreased progressively from the 14th to the 28th day.But Proviron showed the highest effect on the 28th day. These effects were all time-dependent and statistically significant at P 【 0.05(ANOVA).Finally, the phytochemical screening of the seeds of T.conophorum revealed the presence of flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, terpenoids, carbohydrates, volatile oils, steroids, saponins and cardiac glycosid展开更多

Results:The aqueous extract of the Tetracarpidium conophorum seeds(100-400 mg/kg) caused a statistically significant increase(P【0.05,ANOVA) in the level of testosterone of male guinea pigs,from(2.60±0.06) ng/mL to(3.40±0.05) ng/mL,(3.00±0.60) ng/mL and(3.30±0.45) ng/mL on the 7th,14th and 21st day of the administration of the extracts, respectively. The highest increase was obtained after the 7th day of treatment[(3.40±0.05) ng/mL].These effects were very comparable to the effects of Proviron on the testosterone of male guinea pigs, which were obtained to be(2.80±0.01) ng/mL,(2.90±0.16) ng/mL and(3.10±0.30) ng/mL on the 7th, 14th and 21st day, respectively. These effects were dose-and time-dependent.The optimum effect on testosterone level under dose-dependent study f(4.70±0.45) ng/mL]was obtained at 300 mg/kg of Tetracarpidium conophorum after 7 days treatment. Finally, the phytochemical screening of the seeds of Tetracarpidium conophorum revealed the presence of flavonoids, tannin, alkaloids, carbohydrate, volatile oils, terpenoids, saponins and cardiac glycosides. Conclusion:This study supports the claims on the use of the seeds of this plant by traditional medicine practitioners as a fertility agent. However, further studies need to be done to isolate and characterize the active principle(s) responsible for this activity展开更多
