The recent strict air quality regulation in livestock production facilities has accelerated the need for accurate on-farm determination of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission rates (ERs) from livestock operations in the United States under a wide range of production, management, and climate conditions. The estimation of GHG emissions from different ground-level sources or at a property line is a very complicated process, and such measurements require multidirectional expertise including engineering, micrometeorology, agronomy, applied physics, and chemistry. Accurate measurement of gaseous concentration from an emitting source is a prerequisite and of paramount importance for estimating emissions rates (ERs) using any micro-meteorological and sampling device-based method. This paper provides an overview of the state-of-the-art sensors and analyzers used to measure GHG concentrations. Sensor and analyzer selection and their performance in the laboratory and field were discussed. In addition, protocols for data quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) when deploying sensors in the area for long-term use were also discussed. In addition, the preparation of measurement systems, coupling of air samplers with sensing systems for measuring gaseous concentrations, and uncertainties inherent to such measurement methods as a whole to estimate ERs were discussed in this paper.展开更多

The needed knowledge has by large been imported. Now, to some extent the development of phosphorus removal technology may be Swedish contribution to advanced knowledge. This paper presents the development in Sweden, mainly a close to 50-year period. Starting in the late 1960s, a standard of <0.5 mg P/l was the normally raised effluent criteria, regardless of the magnitude of the discharge flow. The successive sharpening of the discharge levels has today resulted in a level of 0.2 to 0.3 mg P/l typically. As a matter of fact, even levels of 0.1 to 0.15 mg P/l have been discussed. The period should a large extent demonstrated both improved technologies and a far better efficiency with respect to the use of chemicals and energy. Some important points in this development may be the understanding of the Oxygen Consumption Potential, as well as the identified needs for an improved nitrogen removal. Lately the problems of complex pollution agents and predominantly the remains of pharmaceutical agents have been identified. To illustrate the development during the 50-year period, two examples are presented from the Swedish context. The main conclusion in this paper is that the Swedish history on phosphorus removal illustrates how empirical science in practice sometimes works, including a never-ending need for an open mind and a readiness to take revised and improved knowledge on board.展开更多

However, TiO2 nanoparticles tend to agglomerate due to high surface energy and van der Waals forces. This leads to precipitation which causes the formation of non-homogeneous MMM morphology. In this study, the effect of octaisobutyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) addition on TiO2/polysulfone MMM was investigated. The aims are to enhance gas separation performance whilst preventing agglomeration of TiO2 nanoparticles. The results demonstrated that inclusion of POSS as dispersant increases MMMs’ CO2/CH4 selectivity and permeance, possibly due to less void formation and more evenly distributed pore structure. For example, synergistic addition of 5 wt% TiO2 and 5 wt% POSS increased the CO2/CH4 selectivity up to 390% compared to MMM without POSS. This is supported by elemental mapping of titanium which revealed that POSS successfully dispersed TiO2 nanoparticles and prevented aggregation. TiO2-POSS/PSf MMMs also retained their favorable thermal stability.展开更多
