Photolysis of P...The photolysis of 16 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) (including mono- through deca-chlorinated) in n-hexane was investigated under ultraviolet irradiation using a 500-W high-pressure mercury lamp. Photolysis of PCBs follows pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics, with photolysis rate constants ranging between 0.0011 s^-1 for PCB-52 and 0.0574 s^-1 for PCB-118. The degradation rates of PCBs by high-pressure mercury lamp irradiation were remarkably independent with respect to the degree of chlorination. Furthermore, partial least squares (PLS) models were developed to provide insight into which aspect of the molecular structure influenced PCB photolysis rate constants. It was found that the photolysis rates of PCBs increased with an increase in the net charge on the carbon atom (qc), (ELUMO-EHOMO)^2, and the Y-axis dipole moment (μy) values, or the decrease in the energy of the second highest occupied molecular orbital (EHOMO-1), energy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (ELUMO), ELUMO + EHOMO, ELUMO - EHOMO, most positive atomic charge (q^+), and the twist angle of the chlorine atom (TA) values.展开更多
The reactivity parameters,Q and e,in the Q-e scheme reflect the reactivities of a monomer(or a radical)in free-radical copolymerizations.By applying multiple linear regression(MLR)analysis,the optimal quantitative str...The reactivity parameters,Q and e,in the Q-e scheme reflect the reactivities of a monomer(or a radical)in free-radical copolymerizations.By applying multiple linear regression(MLR)analysis,the optimal quantitative structure-activity relationship(QSAR)model for the reactivity parameter lnQ was developed based on five descriptors(NAF,NOF,EαLUMO,EβHOMO,and EβLUMO)and 69 monomers with the root mean square(rms)error of 0.61.The optimal MLR model of the parameter e obtained from five descriptors(TOcl,NpN,NSO,EαHOMO and DH)and 68 monomers produced rms error of 0.42.Compared with previous models,the two optimal MLR models in this paper show satisfactory statistical characteristics.The feasibility of combining 2D descriptors obtained from the monomers and 3D descriptors calculated from the radical structures(formed from monomers+H )to predict parameters Q and e has been demonstrated.展开更多

Because of this, measuring the BCFs of many thousands of chemical substances that are potential regulatory interest is simply not possible. Hence, prediction of BCFs of the PCBs based on QSAR were made time to time to increase the probability of success and reduce the time and cost in exploring the toxicological and ecological characteristics of molecules. DFT methods are, in general, capable of generating a variety of isolated molecular descriptors as well as local reactivity descriptors quite accurately. In this work, prediction of BCFs of the fifty seven PCBs based on quantum chemical descriptors derived from DFT method using the B88-PW91 GGA energy function with the DZVP basis set have been made. The study concluded that dipole moment and ionization potential are reliable descriptors for correlation of bioconcentration factors of polychlorinated biphenyls with their electronic structures. The resulted QSAR model (r2 = 0.9139, ?= 0.8986, k = 2, SE = 0.2668) can be useful for predicting the BCFs of compounds prior to their synthesis.展开更多
