The gas-kinetic unified algorithm using Boltzmann model equation have been extended and developed to solve the micro-scale gas flows in Poiseuille-like micro-channels from Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS). The numerical modeling of the gas kinetic boundary conditions suitable for micro-scale gas flows is presented. To test the present method, the classical Couette flows with various Knudsen numbers, the gas flows from short microchannels like plane Poiseuille and the pressure-driven gas flows in two-dimensional short microchannels have been simulated and compared with the approximate solutions of the Boltzmann equation, the related DSMC results, the modified N-S solutions with slip-flow boundary theory, the gas-kinetic BGK-Burnett solutions and the experimental data. The comparisons show that the present gas-kinetic numerical algorithm using the mesoscopic Boltzmann simplified velocity distribution function equation can effectively simulate and reveal the gas flows in microchannels. The numerical experience indicates that this method may be a powerful tool in the numerical simulation of micro-scale gas flows from MEMS. 展开更多

The original vector discrete ordinate radiative transfer(VDISORT)model takes into account Stokes radiance vector but derives its solution assuming azimuthal symmetric surface reflective matrix and atmospheric scattering phase matrix,such as the phase matrix derived from spherical particles or randomly oriented non-spherical particles.In this study,a new VDISORT is developed for general atmospheric scattering and boundary conditions.Stokes vector is decomposed into both sinusoidal and cosinusoidal harmonic modes,and the radiance at arbitrary viewing geometry is solved directly by adding two zero-weighted points in the Gaussian quadrature scheme.The complex eigenvalues in homogeneous solutions are also taken into full consideration.The accuracy of VDISORT model is comprehensively validated by four cases:Rayleigh scattering case,the spherical particle scattering case with the Legendre expansion coefficients of 0th-13th orders of the phase matrix(hereinafter L13),L13 with a polarized source,and the randomoriented oblate particle scattering case with the Legendre expansion coefficients of 0th-11th orders of the phase matrix(hereinafter L11).In all cases,the simulated radiances agree well with the benchmarks,with absolute biases less than 0.0065,0.0006,and 0.0008 for Rayleigh,unpolarized L13,and L11,respectively.Since a polarized bidirectional reflection distribution function(pBRDF)matrix is used as the lower boundary condition,VDISORT is now able to handle fully coupled atmospheric and surface polarimetric radiative transfer processes. 展开更多

The reflection of ocean surface is often assumed azimuthally symmetric in the previous vector discrete ordinate radiative transfer(VDISORT)and many other radiative transfer solvers.This assumption can lead to obvious errors in the simulated radiances.In this study,the vector radiative transfer equation is solved with a polarized bidirectional reflection distribution function(pBRDF)for computing the surface-leaving radiation from the lower boundary.An azimuthally asymmetric pBRDF model at visible and infrared bands over oceans is fully coupled with the updated VDISORT model.The radiance at the ocean surface is combined with the contributions of atmospheric scattering and surface properties.It is shown that the radiance at the ocean surface also exhibits a strong angular dependence in the Stokes vector and the magnitudes of I.Q.and V increase for a larger azimuthal dependence of pBRDF.In addition,the solar position affects the peaks of sun glitter pattern,thus modulating the signal magnitudes and the angular distributions.As ocean wind increases,the reflection weakens with reduced magnitudes of Stokes parameters and lessvarying angular distributions. 展开更多

This paper presents an engineering-oriented UGKS solver package developed in China Aerodynamics Research and Development Center(CARDC).The solver is programmed in Fortran language and uses structured body-fitted mesh,aiming for predicting aerodynamic and aerothermodynamics characteristics in flows covering various regimes on complex three-dimensional configurations.The conservative discrete ordinate method and implicit implementation are incorporated.Meanwhile,a local mesh refinement technique in the velocity space is developed.The parallel strategies include MPI and OpenMP.Test cases include a wedge,a cylinder,a 2D blunt cone,a sphere,and a X38-like vehicle.Good agreements with experimental or DSMC results have been achieved. 展开更多

The Boltzmann simplified velocity distribution function equation describing the gas transfer phenomena from various flow regimes will be explored and solved numerically in this study. The discrete velocity ordinate method of the gas kinetic theory is studied and applied to simulate the complex multi-scale flows. Based on the uncoupling technique on molecular movement and colliding in the DSMC method, the gas-kinetic finite difference scheme is constructed to directly solve the discrete velocity distribution functions by extending and applying the unsteady time-splitting method from computational fluid dynamics. The Gauss-type discrete velocity numerical quadrature technique for different Mach number flows is developed to evaluate the macroscopic flow parameters in the physical space. As a result, the gas-kinetic numerical algorithm is established to study the three-dimensional complex flows from rarefied transition to continuum regimes. The parallel strategy adapted to the gas-kinetic numerical algorithm is investigated by analyzing the inner parallel degree of the algorithm, and then the HPF parallel processing program is developed. To test the reliability of the present gas-kinetic numerical method, the three-dimensional complex flows around sphere and spacecraft shape with various Knudsen numbers are simulated by HPF parallel computing. The computational results are found in high resolution of the flow fields and good agreement with the theoretical and experimental data. The computing practice has confirmed that the present gas-kinetic algorithm probably provides a promising approach to resolve the hypersonic aerothermodynamic problems with the complete spectrum of flow regimes from the gas-kinetic point of view of solving the Boltzmann model equation. 展开更多

In this work,the utilization of lattice Boltzmann method(LBM)in the simulation of coupled conduction and radiation heat transfer in composite materials is studied.The novel D3Q30-LBM and D3Q38-LBM models are proposed for the simulation of radiative transfer equation(RTE).The LBM-LBM model,coupled finite volume method(FVM)and LBM are compared with the coupled FVM and discrete ordinate method(DOM)for 2D and 3D simulations.The results show that the original D3Q26-LBM is insufficient for the simulation of radiation,and both the D3Q30-LBM and D3Q38-LBM are close to the DOM for the RTE.The LBM can have large errors in the simulation of heat conduction when the relaxation time is large.Thus,its application in the composite materials is limited when the ratio between thermal conductivities of different components is large.The models with LBM for RTE can be more efficient than the FVM-DOM for the simulation of conduction-radiation heat transfer in composite materials.The FVM-D3Q30-LBM model is suggested because of its accuracy and efficiency. 展开更多

A comparison of two methods of solution to classical flow problem in rarefied gas dynamics was presented. The two methods were chosen to examine the effect of the following transport phenomena (pressure gradient and temperature difference) viz Poiseuille and Thermal creep respectively on the flow of rarefied gas. The governing equations were approximated using BGK model. It was shown that while the Discrete Ordinate Method could consider more values of the accommodation coefficients, the Finite Difference Method can only take accommodation coefficient of one. It was also shown that the flow rate has its minimum in both solution methods at Kn = 0.1 in the transition regime and that as the channels get wider, the Thermal creep volume flow rates get smaller. 展开更多

The AKN low-Reynolds-number model is employed to predict turbulent flows with separation and heat transfer, while the radiation part of the problem is modeled by the discrete ordinate method (DOM). Discretized forms of the governing equations for fluid flow are obtained by finite volume approach and solved using SIMPLE algorithm. Results are presented for the distributions of Nusselt numbers as a function of the controlling parameters like radiation-conduction parameter (RC) and optical thickness. 展开更多

China’s first Mars rover,Zhurong,successfully landed in the south of Utopia Planitia.The surface water content at the landing area can provide constraints on mineral formation conditions and help us better understand the evolution of the Martian aqueous and geological environment.In this work,the surface kinetic temperature of the Zhurong landing area was derived by analyzing data from the Mars Express Observatoire pour la Minéralogie,l’Eau,les Glaces et l’Activité(OMEGA)spectrometer.Using the Discrete Ordinate Radiative Transfer(DISORT)model,we performed atmospheric correction and thermal correction for the OMEGA data to obtain the surface effective single-particle absorption thickness(ESPAT)parameter to evaluate the surface water content.The surface water content distribution at the landing area was relatively uniform at a lateral scale of~10 km.At the Zhurong landing site,the surface water content in the topmost layer(a few hundred micrometers)of the regolith was 5−8 weight percent water(wt%H_(2)O),assuming surface particle sizes of<45μm,or 1.6−2.5 wt%H_(2)O,assuming surface particle sizes in the range of 125−250μm.The Mars Surface Composition Detector(MarSCoDe)onboard Zhurong also observed significant H_(2)O/OH signals in the landing area.Our results provide an important regional context for the hydration state of the area and can be further verified by the H content derived from the Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectrometer(LIBS)data of MarSCoDe. 展开更多

The high-order compact finite difference technique is introduced to solve the Boltzmann model equation, and the gas-kinetic high-order schemes are developed to simulate the different kinetic model equations such as the BGK model, the Shakhov model and the Ellipsoidal Statistical (ES) model in this paper. The methods are tested for the one-dimensional unsteady shock-tube problems with various Knudsen numbers, the inner flows of normal shock wave for different Mach numbers, and the two-dimensional flows past a circular cylinder and a NACA 002 airfoil to verify the reliability of the present high-order algorithm and simulate gas transport phenomena covering various flow regimes. The computed results are found in good agreement both with the theoretical prediction from continuum to rarefied gas dynamics, the related DSMC solutions, and with the experimental results. The numerical effect of the schemes with the different precision and the different types of Boltzmann collision models on the computational efficiency and computed results is investigated and analyzed. The numerical experience indicates that an approach developing and applying the gas-kinetic high-order algorithm is feasible for directly solving the Boltzmann model equation. 展开更多
