Water quality of the river Nile and trace elements of the water, sediments and fish tissues were investigated in the current work. Eighteen different sampling points were selected along the whole course of the River Nile from its spring at Aswan to its estuaries at Rosetta and Damietta. Higher mean value of conductivity, alkalinity, chemical oxygen demand (COD), total organic carbon (TOC), ammonia (NH3), nitrate (NO3), total solid (TS), sulphate (SO4), chloride (Cl), orthophosphate were recorded in the water of Damietta and Rosetta branches comparing to other sites. Also trace metals in the water, sediments and tissues of Clarias gariepinus increased significantly (P Fe > Cu > Pb > Mn > Cr> Cd > Hg. In the gill tissues theses metals were accumulated in the following order Fe > Zn > Mn > Pb > Cr > Cu > Cd> Hg. The low accumulation of metals in muscle may be due to lack of binding affinity of these metals with the proteins of muscle. This is particularly important because muscles contribute the greatest mass of the flesh that is consumed as food. 展开更多

This primer article focuses on the basic reproduction number,ℛ0,for infectious diseases, and other reproduction numbers related toℛ0 that are useful in guiding control strategies.Beginning with a simple population model, the concept is developed for a threshold value ofℛ0 determining whether or not the disease dies out.The next generation matrix method of calculatingℛ0 in a compartmental model is described and illustrated. To address control strategies, type and target reproduction numbers are defined,as well as sensitivity and elasticity indices. These theoretical ideas are then applied to models that are formulated for West Nile virus in birds(a vector-borne disease),cholera in humans(a disease with two transmission pathways),anthrax in animals(a disease that can be spread by dead carcasses and spores),and Zika in humans(spread by mosquitoes and sexual contacts). Some parameter values from literature data are used to illustrate the results. Finally, references for other ways to calculateℛ0 are given. These are useful for more complicated models that, for example, take account of variations in environmental fluctuation or stochasticity. 展开更多

The International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) recognized the lack of hydro- logical data as a world-wide problem in 2002 and adopted the Prediction of Ungauged Basins (PUB) as a decadal research agenda during the period of 2003 to 2012. One of the objectives is to further develop methodologies for prediction in ungauged basins and to reduce uncertainties in model prediction. Estimation of stream flows is required for flood control, water quality control, valley habitat assessment and water budget of a country. However, the majority of water catchments, streams and valleys are ungauged in most developing countries. The main objective of this paper is to introduce the IHACRES (Identification of Hy- drographs and Components from Rainfall, Evaporation and Stream) model into African hydrological plan- ning as a methodology for water resources assessment, which in turn can be used to resolve water conflicts between communities and countries and to study the climate change issues. This is because the IHACRES model is applied for the estimation of flows in ungauged catchments whose physical catchments descriptors (PCDs) can be determined by driving variables (i.e. rainfall and temperature); and also in gauged streams but whose gauging stations are no longer operational but historical data are available for model calibration. The model provides a valuable insight into the hydrologic behaviour of the upper water sources for valleys as well as provides a useful methodology for water resources assessment in situations of scarce financial resources in developing countries. In addition, it requires relatively few parameters in its calibration and has been successful applied in previous regionalization studies. It will also make possible the equitable distri- bution of water resources in international basins and rivers' catchments. This paper does not apply the model anywhere, but recommends it as a methodology for water resources assessment in order to cure water conflicts on the African c 展开更多

Several cardiac outcomes have been reported with West Nile-encephalitis;however, the underlying pathophysiology remains complex. We present a 42-year-old female, with multiple sclerosis, whose neurological symptoms and respiratory decline were finally explained by the diagnosis of West Nile-encephalitis. During her admission, the isolated peaked T-waves indicated the underlying stress-induced cardiomyopathy. The absence of all other causes of hyperacute T-waves, their subsequent resolution with the resolution of infection and improvement in wall motion abnormalities, further supported the association. This case highlights the importance of considering hyperacute T-waves in an approach towards the diagnosis of WNV-encephalitis related atypical variant of stress-induced cardiomyopathy. 展开更多

This study investigated the effects of yellow mealworm meal(YM)replacing soybean meal(SBM)at different proportions(0%,15%,30%and 45%,referred as YM0,YM15,YM30 and YM45,respectively)on the flesh quality of Nile tilapia.A total of 360 fish(70.0±0.12 g)were randomly divided into 4 groups(3 tanks per group).Fish were fed the experimental diet twice daily for 10 wk.The results showed that muscle protein content significantly decreased in YM30 and YM45,while the lipid content significantly decreased in YM45(P<0.05).The essential amino acids and flavor amino acids of the muscle were not affected by the YM substitution, while saturated fatty acid content decreased in YM30 and YM45 compared with YM0(P<0.05).Fillets in YM45 had higher hardness, gumminess, and a higher proportion of thin myofibers(≤100μm,P<0.05)than those in other groups.Further analysis revealed that apoptosis and atrophy related genes were up-regulated,while the muscle antioxidant capacity decreased significantly in YM45(P<0.05),which may be related to the high acid value in YM45 diet. Our findings indicated that YM could replace up to 30%SBM without substantially altering the flesh quality. When the replacement ratio increased to 45%,the flesh quality would change.Special attention should be paid to avoid feed rancidity which may affect the flesh quality of fish. 展开更多

The NEW GIFT Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus niloticus L.) is a nationally certificated new strain selected over 14 years and 9 generations from the base strain of GIFT Nile tilapia, introduced in 1994. This new variety has been extended in most of areas of China. The management of genetically improved strains, including the genetic markers for identification is needed urgently. RAPD analysis was conducted and their conversion to SCAR markers was developed. From NEW GIFT Nile tilapia, two strain-specific RAPD bands, S304624 bp and S36568 bp were identified. The strain-specific RAPD bands were gel-purified, cloned, and sequenced. Locus-specific primers were then designed to amplify the strain-specific bands. PCR amplification was conducted to test the variations in allele frequencies of two converted SCAR markers among the NEW GIFT Nile tilapia and its base strains, as well as 7 additional farmed strains worldwide. The frequency of SCAR marker Ⅰ (553 bp) was 85.7% in NEW GIFT Nile tilapia, but 16.7% in the base strain. The frequency of SCAR marker Ⅱ (558 bp) was 91.4% in NEW GIFT Nile tilapia, but 0% 70% in the 7 other strains. In order to confirm the utility of these two markers, an examination was conducted for a wild population from Egypt, resulted the frequency of SCAR Ⅰ and Ⅱ was 10% and 70%, respectively, much lower than that of New GIFT strain. The increase in allele frequency of these two SCAR markers suggests that these markers might be genetically linked to the quantitative trait loci (QTL) underlining the performance traits by long term selection, and indicate the bright potential of SCAR marker technology for tracking generations during selection progress and for distinguishing among genetically improved strain and other strains. 展开更多

Objectives The main objective of the present article is to assess and evaluate the characteristics of the Nile water system , and identify the major sources of pollution and its environmental and health consequences. The article is also aimed to highlight the importance of water management via re-use and recycle of treated effluents for industrial purpose and for cultivation of desert land. Method An intensive effort was made by the authors to collect, assess and compile the available data about the River Nile. Physico-chemical analyses were conducted to check the validity of the collected data. For the determination of micro-pollutants, Gas Chromatography (GC) and High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) were used. Heavy metals were also determined to investigate the level of industrial pollution in the river system. Results The available data revealed that the river receives a large quantity of industrial, agriculture and domestic wastewater. It is worth mentioning that the river is still able to recover in virtually all the locations, with very little exception. This is due to the high dilution ratio. The collected data confirmed the presence of high concentrations of chromium and manganese in all sediment samples. The residues of organo-chlorine insecticides were detected in virtually all locations. However, the levels of such residues are usually below the limit set by the WHO for use as drinking water. The most polluted lakes are Lake Maryut and Lake Manzala. Groundwater pollution is closely related to adjacent (polluted) surface waters. High concentrations of nutrients, E.coli, sulfur, heavy metals, etc. have been observed in the shallow groundwater, largely surpassing WHO standards for drinking water use. Conclusion A regular and continuous monitoring scheme shall be developed for the River Nile system. The environmental law shall be enforced to prohibit the discharge of wastewater (agricultural, domestic or industrial) to River Nile system. 展开更多

This study was attempted to reveal the changes in three hematological parameters such as blood hemoglobin, number of white blood cells(WBCs)and number of red blood cells(RBCs)and one biochemical(e.g.,glucose)parameter along with the changes in histomorphological structures of gills and kidney of Nile tilapia fry reared in saline water. Two experimental set up were used for two different age groups-5 days-after-hatch(5DAH)and 15 days-after-hatch(15DAH)-to test a novel hypothesis:if a little difference in the age during the first exposure to saline water could produce any variation in the results. They were placed into 6 plastic drums having six different salinity levels:0,5,10,15,20 and 25.After 60 days,at least 5 individuals were taken out from each drum to observe the above-hematological and histomorphological parameters.A two-way-ANOVA revealed that, except for hemoglobin, all the observed parameters have been affected the effect of age×salinity interaction(P<0.05).Between the two age groups, only the overall average glucose value and RBC count were significantly different.Among various salinity levels, only RBC and WBC counts differed significantly.Further, the mean glucose value,RBC counts and WBC count at different salinities differed significantly from the base mean value of each parameter. With regard to the histomorphological structure of the gills and kidney, various malformations were evident.Though hypertrophy, epithelial uplifting and epithelial necrosis were present as gill degenerations, hyperplasia was prevalent across almost all salinity levels. On the other hand, glomerular necrosis, pyknotic nucleus, hyaline droplets degeneration, shrinking of the glomeruli, etc.were observed in kidney structures.By assisting to understand the effects of salinity stress, all these data on tilapia fry will help to determine the prospects and scope of culturing the species in high-salinity water. 展开更多

Tilapia culture is one of the largest sectors of global aquaculture.Among the different species of tilapia,Nile tilapia(Oreochromis niloticus)is perhaps the top cultured species. The production of Nile tilapia has been continually increasing throughout the years resulting in genetic deterioration.Several tilapia strains with better growth performance and adaptive capability to survive in different culture conditions have been developed to alleviate the crisis.Increased demand for Nile tilapia implies higher farming cost.Plant-based proteins are utilized as partial or complete fishmeal replacements to reduce feed cost. However, these proteins can adversely affect and alter growth and feed performance, carcass composition and indices, and gut and hepatic health. This review discusses the use of seven plant-based proteins:namely, soybean, copra, pea, corn, palm kernel, microalgae, and seaweed as a Nile tilapia aquafeed.Different processing methods are employed to produce several types of plant-based proteins.Processed plant-protein types, when utilized as an aquafeed ingredient, vary in its effect on the performance,hemato-immunological parameters, and gut and hepatic health of Nile tilapia.Studies have shown that Nile tilapia can effectively maximize plant-based protein diets based on the preparation method, type of plant source, amino acid supplementation, and inclusion levels of the plant proteins. These readily available crops should be considered as primary protein sources for aquaculture.Hindrances to the use of plant-based proteins as a main dietary protein are limiting amino acids, presence of anti-nutritional factors, and the competition between its demand as human food and as animal feed. 展开更多

The quality of a water body is usually characterized by sets of physical, chemical, and biological parameters, which are mutually interrelated. Since August 1997, monthly records of 33 parameters, monitored at 102 locations on the Nile Delta drainage system, are stored in a National Database operated by the Drainage Research Institute (DRI). Correlation patterns may be found between water quantity and water quality parameters at the same location, or among water quality parameters within a monitoring location or among locations. Serial correlation is also detected in water quality variables. Through the investigation of the level of information redundancy, assessment and redesign of water quality monitoring network aim to improve the overall network efficiency and cost effectiveness. In this study, the potential of the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) on simulating interrelation between water quality parameters is examined. Several ANN inputs, structures and training possibilities are assessed and the best ANN model and modeling procedure is selected. The prediction capabilities of the ANN are compared with the linear regression models with autocorrelated residuals, usually used for this purpose. It is concluded that the ANN models are more accurate than the linear regression models having the same inputs and output. 展开更多

A Large scale hydropower dam known as Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is under construction on the Blue Nile River just upstream of the Ethiopian-Sudan border in Ethiopia. The GERD has an active storage capacity of more than 60,000 Mm3 and is anticipated to produce 6000 MW of hydropower energy. The aim of this study was to assess the potential impact of the dam on the performance of the High Aswan Dam (HAD) during filling and operation phases using a simulation model using Mike Basin river basin simulation model. The results indicate the planned 6 years filling period is sufficient to fill the reservoir with little impact on the current irrigation water demands from HAD in Egypt without additional management investment. There will be about 12% and 7% of reduction of annual energy output from High Aswan Dam during the filling and after filling stage of GERD respectively. Cumulative Energy production from the two dams will increase significantly Water loss at HAD due to evaporation will decreases by 22%. Overall performance of HAD during and after filling of the GERD remains at a reliability level of 96%. The study advises to utilize the results cautiously as it is based on only one historical realization of the many possible scenarios that may evolve in the future. 展开更多

The rate constant for the chemical reaction between NADH and PNB is strongly influenced by NADH concentration and the pH value of solution, and it decreases with increasing NADH concentration, indicating that the electrocatalytic process proceeds via the formation of an intermediate of charge-transfer complex between NADH and PNB. 展开更多

Seismic attributes supported by composite logs are the best way that can enable the interpreter to understand seismic data very well and generate a new view of the output results.Detection of the reservoir zone can be enhanced by analyzing wells log data based on Gamma-ray,Resistivity,and Vp sonic logs respectively.Composite logs of Scarab-1,Scarab-De,Scarab-Da,Scarab-Dd,and Scarab-2 wells indicate the lateral and vertical variation of the gas reservoir in ElWastani Formation. However, there are several seismic attributes that can be used to support reservoirs identification. For enhancement the detection of the hydrocarbon reservoirs,it is important to carefully analyze the 2D seismic data, which in this study will be primarily prepared to enhance seismic attributes results for the identification of gas chimneys, gas zones as channels, enhance stratigraphic and structural interpretations. In this article,we have performed data conditioning, quality control and seismic well ties including the preliminary wavelet extractions to get accurate output. Then,we have extracted of several classes of physical, geometrical and complex attributes as a direct hydrocarbon indicator to identify the gas zones, channels and chimneys and to identify the faults and discontinuities. The main contribution of this work is to provide a more detailed seismic reflection image supported by several seismic attributes classes and well logs to show a visual and quantitative evidence to identify the gas channels and gas chimneys with improving the detection of the faults and discontinuities. 展开更多

Moringa oleifera is well known as a highly nutritious plant and a water purifier in fish culture.Tilapia fish has many impressive qualities making them very suitable for aquaculture. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of supplementation of Moringa oleifera aqueous extract(MOAE)at varying concentrations(0,100,200,and 400 mg/kg diet for 90 days)on growth performance, hematological, and some biochemical parameters of Nile tilapia.Additionally, histological changes and immunohistochemical expression of caspase 3 in gills and livers were evaluated.Significant enhancements(P<0.05)in the final weight, weight gain, specific growth rate, red blood cells, hemoglobin, packed cell volume, white blood cells, and total serum protein were observed in fish fed 200 mg MOAE/kg diet compared with other groups. However,a significant reduction(P<0.05)of liver and kidney function tests and non-significant changes in lipid profile were recorded. On the other hand, fish fed 400 mg MOAE/kg diet revealed disturbance in the corresponding parameters.Severe histological degenerative changes were detected in the gills and liver of fish fed 400 mg MOAE/kg diet.In comparison, fish fed 200 mg MOAE/kg diet showed the best histo-architectures of these organs compared with other groups.Concomitant immune expressions of caspase 3 were determined where gills and liver of fish fed 400 mg MOAE/kg diet revealed extensive number of positive caspase 3 cells indicating severe apoptotic features.Accordingly,a dietary MOAE at 200 mg/kg diet is recommended to improve the growth performance, hematological parameters, liver and kidney functions in Nile tilapia.Meanwhile, caution must be considered when using MOAE at a concentration over 200 mg/kg diet. 展开更多

Syzygium jambolanum is a promising natural treatment for diabetes. The potential benefits of S jambolanum for diabetes include lowering blood sugar levels, increasing insulin sensitivity, protecting pancreatic beta cells, and slowing the absorption of glucose into the bloodstream. The anti-diabetic activity of the crude extract of S jambolanum was evaluated in L6 myotubes and the lipid deposition in tissue was measured using Nile red Staining.Nile red staining confirmed that a considerable quantity of lipids had been deposited in the tissue treated with a crude extract of S jambolanum, comparable to the quantity of lipids deposited with a standard drug known as Rosiglitazone. This study analyzed the anti-diabetic activity of a crude extract of S jambolanum to understand its potential as a feedstock for extracting bioactive constituents to screen for bioactive molecules in the treatment of diabetes. 展开更多
