However, little is known about the adverse effects of graphene on the human body and ecological environment. The purpose of our work is to make assessment on the toxicity of graphene oxide (GO) against human cell line (human bone marrow neuroblastoma cell line and human epithelial carcinoma cell line) and zebrafish (Danio rerio) by comparing the toxic effects of GO with its sister, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs). The results show that GO has a moderate toxicity to organisms since it can induce minor (about 20%) cell growth inhibition and slight hatching delay of zebrafish embryos at a dosage of 50 mg/L, but did not result in significant increase of apoptosis in embryo, while MWNTs exhibit acute toxicity leading to a strong inhibition of cell proliferation and serious morphological defects in developing embryos even at relatively low concentration of 25 mg/L. The distinctive toxicity of GO and MWNTs should be ascribed to the different models of interaction between nanomaterials and organisms, which arises from the different geometric structures of nanomaterials. Collectively, our work suggests that GO does actual toxicity to organisms posing potential environmental risks and the result is also shedding light on the geometrical structure-dependent toxicity of graphitic nanomaterials.展开更多

The results indicated that the percentage removal and adsorption capacity of lead remarkably increased with decreasing outer diameter due to larger specific surface area (SSA). The SSA-normalized maximum adsorption capacity (qJSSA) and SSA-normalized adsorption coefficient (KdSSA) were strongly positively correlated with surface oxygen content, implying that lead adsorption onto MWCNTs significantly increases with the rise of oxygen content and decreases with decreasing SSA. The calculated thermodynamic parameters indicated that adsorption of lead on MWCNTs was endothermic and spontaneous. When the oxygen content of MWCNTs increased from 2.0% to 5.9%, the standard free energy (AGt) became more negative, which implied that the oxygenated functional groups increased the adsorption affinity of MWCNTs for lead. Through calculation of enthalpy (△H0), AGO and free energy of adsorption (Ea), lead adsorption onto MWCNTs was recognized as a chemisorption process. The chemical interaction between lead and the phenolic groups of MWCNTs could be one of the main adsorption mechanisms due to highly positive correlations between the phenolic groups and Kd/SSA or qm/SSA.展开更多

The MWCNTs covered by Co-Fe is a desirable light absorbent in wide wave band by utilizing electroless plating process in experiments. Field-emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and field-emission transmission electron microscope (FETEM) images as well as energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) results are presented to show the morphology, components and electromagnetic parameters of MWCNTs. Their catalytic performance for thiophene hydrodesulfurization (HDS) and pyrrole hydrodenitrification (HDN) reactions was studied, and compared with the reference system sup- ported by AC. Over the 7.24%Mo3Co1/CNTs catalyst at reaction condition of 1.5 MPa, 613 K, C4H4S/H2=3.7/96.3(molar ratio) and GHSV≈8000 mlswP/(g-cat.h), the specific HDS activity of thiophene reached 3.29 mmolc4H4S/(s.molMo), which was 1.32 times as high as that (2.49 mmolc4H4S/(s.molMo)) of the AC-based counterpart, and was 2.47 times as high as that (1.33 mmolc4H4S/(s-molMo)) of the catalysts supported by AC with the respective optimal MoaCol-loading amount, 16.90%Mo3Co1/AC. Analogous reaction-chemical behaviours were also observed in the case of pyrrole HDN. It was experimentally found that using the CNTs in place of AC as support of the catalyst caused little change in the apparent activation energy for the thiophene HDS or pyrrole HDN reaction, but led to a significant increase in the concentration of catalytically active Mo-species (Mo^4+) at the surface of the functioning catalyst. On the other hand, H2-TPD measurements revealed that the CNT-supported catalyst could reversibly adsorb a greater amount of hydrogen under atmospheric pressure at temperatures ranging from room temperature to about 673 K. This unique feature would help to generate microenvironments with higher stationarystate concentration of active hydrogen-adspecies at the surface of the functioning catalyst. Both factors mentioned above were favorable to increasing the rate of thiophene HDS and pyrrole HDN reactions.展开更多

Methods The 2-h post-fertilization (hpf) zebrafish embryos were exposed to MWCNTs, GO, and RGO at different concentrations (1, 5, 10, 50, 100 mg/L) for 96 h. Afterwards, the effects of the 3 nanomateria on spontaneous movement, heart rate, hatching rate, length of larvae, mortality, and malformations Is were evaluated. Results Statistical analysis indicated that RGO significantly inhibited the hatching of zebrafish embryos. Furthermore, RGO and MWCNTs decreased the length of the hatched larvae at 96 hpf. No obvious morphological malformation or mortality was observed in the zebrafish embryos after exposure to the three nanomaterials. Conclusion MWCNTs, GO, and RGO were all toxic to zebrafish embryos to influence embryos hatching and larvae length. Although no obvious morphological malformation and mortality were observed in exposed zebrafish embryos, further studies on the toxicity of the three nanomaterials are still needed.展开更多

Vibration governing equations of an N-layer carbon nanotube are formulated by considering the scale effect. In the numerical simulations, the effects of different theories, small-scale, variation of wavenumber, the innermost radius and length of double- walled and triple-walled carbon nanotubes are considered. Vibrational frequencies decrease with an increase of scale coefficient, the innermost radius, length of nanotube and effects of wall number are negligible. The results show that the cut-off frequencies can be influenced by the wall number of nanotubes.展开更多

Nanofluids are nano-sized particles dispersed in conventional working fluids. A great number of materials have potential to be used in nanoparticles production and then in nanofluids;one of them is Multi-Walled Carbon Nano Tubes (MWCNT). They have thermal conductivity around 3000 W/mK while other materials used as nanoparticles like CuO have thermal conductivity of 76.5 W/mK. Due to this fact, MWCNT nanoparticles have potential to be used in nanofluids production, aiming to increase heat transfer rate in energy systems. In this context, the main goal of this paper is to evaluate from the synthesis to the experimental measurement of thermal conductivity of nanofluid samples based on functionalized (-OH) MWCNT nanoparticles. They will be analyzed nanoparticles with different functionalization degrees (4% wt, 6% wt, and 9% wt). In addition, it will be quantified other thermophysical properties (dynamic viscosity, specific heat and specific mass) of the synthetized nanofluids. So, the present work can contribute with experimental data that will help researches in the study and development of MWCNT nanofluids. According to the results, the maximum increment obtained in thermal conductivity was 10.65% in relation to the base fluid (water).展开更多

In this study, two important auxins were selected as model analytes, namely indole-3- butyric acid (IBA) and 1-naphthylacetic acid (NAA). They could be extracted and concentrated due to their π-π stacking interactions with MWCNT. Then HPLC-UV was introduced to detect IBA and NAA after sample pretreatment. Factors that may affect the enrichment efficiency were investigated and optimized. Comparative studies showed that MWCNT was superior to CI 8 for the extraction of the two analytes. Validation experiments showed that the optimized method had good linearity (0.9998 and 0.9960), high recovery (81.4%-85.4%), and low detection limits (0.0030 mg/L and 0.0012 mg/L). The results indicated that the novel method had advantages of convenience, good sensitivity, high efficiency, and it was feasible for the determination of auxins in plant samples.展开更多

The film was further coated with a natural antimicrobial peptide nisin. We studied the effects of nisin coating on the attachment of Bacillus anthracis spores, the germination of attached spores, and the subsequent biofilm formation from attached spores. It was found that the strong adsorptivity and the super hydrophobicity of MWCNTs provided an ideal platform for nisin coating. Nisin coating on MWCNT sheets decreased surface hydrophobicity, reduced spore attachment, and reduced the germination of attached spores by 3.5 fold, and further inhibited the subsequent biofilm formation by 94.6% compared to that on uncoated MWCNT sheet. Nisin also changed the morphology of vegetative cells in the formed biofilm. The results of this study demonstrated that the anti-adhesion and antimicrobial effect of nisin in combination with the physical properties of carbon nanotubes had the potential in producing effective anti-biofilm formation surfaces.展开更多

The results show that the cut-off frequencies can be influenced by the wall number of nanotubes.

文摘A method of cross-linking multi-walled carbon nanotubes by a nucleophilic substitution of brominated multi-walled carbon nanotubes using hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin anions was studied. The modified multi-walled carbon nanotube samples were characterized using thermogravimetric analysis, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes were used as a chiral stationary phase additive for thin-layer chromatography to separate clenbuterol enantiomers, and the chiral separation factor was increased.

文摘The microstructural evolution and oxidation resistance of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) by di- rectly heating silicon powder and MWCNTs in a coke bed from 1000 to 1500 ~C are investigated with the aid of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC). The results showed that the morphology and microstructure of MWCNTs did not change much after being treated from 1000 ~C to 1200 ~C. An obvious SiC coating was formed on the surface of MWCNTs from 1300 to 1400 ~C. Up to 1500 ~C, nearly all the MWCNTs transformed into SiC nanowires. The oxidation resistance of the treated MWCNTs was improved compared with as-received ones. Non-isothermal kinetics showed that the oxidation activation energy of the treated MWCNTs reached 208 kJ/mol, much higher than 264 k J/tool of as-received ones.
文摘A new amperometric biosensor for hydrogen peroxide was developed based on adsorption of horseradish peroxidase at the glassy carbon electrode modified with zinc oxide nanoflowers produced by electrodeposition onto multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) film. The morphology of the MWNTs/nano-ZnO electrode has been investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the electrochemical performance of the electrode has also been studied by amperometric method. The resulting electrode offered an excellent detection for hydrogen peroxide at -0.11 V with a linear response range of 9.9×10^-7 to 2.9×10^-3 mol/L with a correlation coefficient of 0.991, and response time 〈5 s. The biosensor displays rapid response and expanded linear response range, and excellent stability.
文摘A possible way to increase thermal conductivity of working fluids, while keeping pressure drop at acceptable levels, is through nanofluids. According to the results, the maximum increment obtained in thermal conductivity was 10.65% in relation to the base fluid (water).

文摘In this work, a new sample pretreatment method prior to HPLC separations was developed for the determination of auxins in plant samples, Owing to its large surface area and high adsorption capacity, multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) was chosen as the adsorbent for the extraction of auxins from plant samples. The results indicated that the novel method had advantages of convenience, good sensitivity, high efficiency, and it was feasible for the determination of auxins in plant samples.

文摘Pd nanoparticles(Pd-NPs)were prepared and directly anchored on the surface of multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs)in the absence of chemical reduction agent, where MWCNTs were used as both the chemical reduction agent and the support substrate of Pd-NPs.Effect of various surfactants on the in situ deposition of PdNPs on MWCNTs was investigated. When MWCNTs were modified with a cationic surfactant(hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide,CTAB),the amount of the Pd-NPs(Pd-NP/CTAB-MWCNT)generated by such an in situ deposition method gets a notable increase, and the size of the as-synthesized Pd-NPs becomes smaller, compared with those in the absence of any surfactant(Pd-NP/MWCNT)or in the presence of an anionic surfactant SDS(Pd-NP/SDS-MWCNT)and a neutral surfactant OP(PdNP/OP-MWCNT).Results show that the MWCNTs modified with CTAB are propitious to the in situ reduction of Pd2?.Among the prepared catalysts,Pd-NP/CTABMWCNT displays the highest electroactivity for ethanol oxidation in alkaline media.

文摘Multi-walled carbon nanotube(MWCNT) sheet was fabricated from a drawable MWCNT forest and then deposited on poly(methyl methacrylate) film. The results of this study demonstrated that the anti-adhesion and antimicrobial effect of nisin in combination with the physical properties of carbon nanotubes had the potential in producing effective anti-biofilm formation surfaces.

文摘In this study,platinum(Pt)-polyaniline(PANI)/MWNTs catalysts were synthesized by two sequential reactions.First, coreshell structural PANI/MWNTs composites were fabricated by in-situ chemical oxidation polymerization,in which MWNTs act as the core and PANI as the shell. Then,Pt particles were deposited on the PANI/MWNTs composites by a chemical reduction method. The morphology and constitution of the products were characterized by FT IR,scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and XRD.It was observed that the Pt particles were smaller in size and more uniformly distributed on these composite supports than those on the reference, pure MWNT supports.XRD results showed higher Pt(111) content in the catalyst deposited on PANI/MWNTs supports than that on MWNTs.The cyclic voltammeter(CV) tests demonstrated that the electrode modified by Pt-PANI/MWNTs ternary composite catalyst showed a higher catalytic stability than Pt-MWNT binary catalyst did,due to the synergic interaction between Pt and the composite support.
