Sandstone samples from this area usually have low porosity and poor connectivity. We analyze the observed velocity data of tight sandstone samples with the Mori- Tanaka model, and give the sandstone framework physical model in this area based on theory and experiment analysis. The matrix modulus was obtained by an empirical relationship and then the experiment data were compared with the values predicted by the Mori-Tanaka model with different pore shapes. The results revealed that the experiment data were close to the model with low pore aspect ratio. Suppose there are sufficient identical particle inclusions with total volume fraction c in a representative volume element (RVE) of a particulate composite, these inclusions are separated into two groups, with volume fractions (1 -A-1)c and c/A over the RVE, respectively. We assume that the first group of inclusions has already been embedded in the original matrix to form a fictitious matrix, and the RVE of the composite consists of the fictitious matrix and the second group of particle inclusions. The property of the fictitious matrix is determined by the conventional self-consistent scheme, while the effective elastoplastic property of the composite is determined by the conventional Mori-Tanaka scheme. Analysis shows that, the conventional Mori-Tanaka scheme and self-consistent scheme can be obtained as the two limit cases of the extended approach as A = 1 and A = c~, respectively. The constitutive behavior of the inclusions in either Group I or Group II is identical, indicating the consistency in the description of the constitutive behavior in the two steps. ~klrthermore, the effective elastoplastic behavior of some typical particulate composites is analyzed, and the satisfactory agreement between the computational and experimental results demonstrates the validity of the extended approach. The introduced A can serve reasonably as a parameter, which is related to the actual property of composites and can be identified by experiments, for a more accurate evaluation of the effective elastoplastic property of particulate composites.展开更多

With the help of field emission scanning electron microscope(FESEM) and energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy(EDS), the indentation morphology and mineral composition in indentation area were quantitatively analyzed. According to mechanical strength classification, a micromechanical model with three components was introduced and the Mori-Tanaka model was used to upscale mechanical parameters from nano-scale to centimeter-size scale, which were further compared with uniaxial compression results. The experimental results show that there is a positive linear correlation between Young's modulus and hardness and between the Young's modulus and the fracture toughness under nano-scale; the Young's modulus, hardness and fracture toughness perpendicular to the bedding are slightly lower than those parallel with the bedding. According to data statistics, the mechanical properties at the nano-scale follow Weibull distribution feature and the dispersion degree of hardness results is the highest, which is mainly due to shale anisotropy and nanoindentation projection uncertainty. Comparing the results from nanoindentation test, with those from upscaling model and uniaxial compression test shows that the mechanical parameters at the nano-scale are higher than those from upscaling model and uniaxial compression test, which proves mechanical parameters at different scales have differences. It's because the larger the core, the more pores and internal weakness it contains, the less accurate the interpreted results of mechanical parameters will be.展开更多

A relatively low content of layered silicate yields a significant enhancement of material performance. After the volume fraction of clay reaches a relatively low 'critical value'; however, further increasing does not show a greater stiffening effect. This phenomenon is contrary to previous micromechanical predictions and is not understood well. Based on the analysis on the microstructures of PLS nanocomposites, the present note provides an insight into the physical micromechanisms of the above unexpected phenomenon. The properties of EI are obtained by embedding a single inclusion with the interface into an infinite matrix. However, whether such an EI is universal for different micromechanics-based methods is rarely discussed in the literature. In this pa- per, the interface energy theory is used to study the applicability of the above mentioned EI. It is found that some elastic properties of the EI are related only to the properties of the inclusion and the interface, whereas others are also related to the properties of the matrix. The former properties of the EI can be applied to both the classical Mori-Tanaka method (MTM) and the generalized self-consistent method (GSCM). However, the latter can be applied only to the MTM. Two kinds of new EIs are proposed for the GSCM and used to estimate the effective mechanical properties of nanocomposites.展开更多

The joints in rock masses are treated as penny-shaped inclusion in solid but not through structural planes by considering joint density, closure effect, joint geometry. The mechanical behavior of the joints is represented by an elasto-plastic constitutive law. Mori-Tanaka method is used to derive the relationship between the joint deformations and macroscopic strains. The incremental stress-strain relationship of rock masses is formulated by taking the volume average of the representative volume element. Meanwhile, the behavior of joints is obtained. By using implicit integration algorithms, the consistent tangent moduli are proposed and the method of updating stresses and joint displacements is presented. Material properties of the BDFG plate change in both the thickness and length directions via power-law distributions and Mori-Tanaka model. The governing equation of motion of BDFG plate in the fluid-plate system is formulated basing on Hamilton's principle and the refined quasi three-dimensional (3D) plate theory with improved function f(z). The fluid velocity potential is derived from the boundary conditions of the fluid-plate system and is used to determine the added mass. As for the arbitrary boundary conditions, a semi-analytical solution is presented via a hybrid approach combining the state space method and the technique of differential quadrature. The temperature field in the plate is determined according to the steady-state 3D thermal conduction. The Mori-Tanaka method with a power-law volume fraction profile is used to predict the effective material properties including the bulk and shear moduli, while the effective coefficient of thermal expansion and the thermal conductivity are estimated using other micromechanics-based models. To facilitate the im-plementation of state space analysis through the thickness direction, the approximate laminate model is employed to reduce the inhomogeneous plate into a homogeneous laminate that delivers a state equation with constant coefficients. The present solutions are validated by comparisons with the exact ones for both thin and thick plates. Effects of gradient indices, volume fraction of ceramics, and boundary conditions on the thermomechanical behavior of functionally graded plates are discussed.展开更多
