Results indicated that more Mg;Y;particles and Mg;Nd;Y(β) phases were dispersed in the matrix when Nd content increased from 0 wt% to 2.63 wt% in the extruded alloys.Consequently, the nucleation of dynamic recrystallization and the volume fraction of recrystallized grains were promoted obviously. The average grain size can be refined in the range of 4.6–1.3 μm after the addition of 2.63 wt% Nd. The tensile strength of extruded alloys increased with increasing Nd content, and elongation exhibited an opposite change tendency. The extruded alloy sheet with 1.01 wt% Nd demonstrates optimal combination of strength and plasticity, i.e., the ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation were 273 MPa, 214 MPa, and 24.2%, respectively. Variations in mechanical properties are discussed on the basis of microstructure observations.展开更多

It is revealed that different forming modes do not influence the phase composition of as-cast alloy. In the as-cast specimens, the microstructures are similar and composed of α-Mg solid solution, eutectic compound of α-Mg+Mg 24 (Gd, Y) 5 and cuboid-shaped Mg 5 (Gd, Y) phase; whereas the average grain size of the alloy produced by metal mould casting is smaller than that by lost foam casting. The eutectic compound of the alloy is completely dissolved after solution treatment at 525 ℃for 6 h, while the Mg 5 (Gd, Y) phase still exists after solution treatment. After peak-ageing, the lost foam cast alloy exhibits the maximum ultimate tensile strength of 285 MPa, and metal mould cast specimen 325 MPa at room temperature, while the tensile yield strengths of them are comparable. It can be concluded that GW104 alloy cast by lost foam casting possesses similar microstructure and evidently lower mechanical strength compared with metal mould cast alloy, due to slow solidification rate and proneness to form shrinkage porosities during lost foam casting process.展开更多

During HIP process, shrinkage porosity was closed by grain compatible deformation and subsequent diffusion across the bonding interface. The amount of initial shrinkage porosity was the key factor for shrinkage porosity closure. HIP was testified to be effective on shrinkage porosity reduction in GW63 alloy due to its relatively narrow solidification range and resultant low content of initial shrinkage porosity in most sections, leading to higher tensile properties both in as-cast and cast-T6 condition. The improvement in tensile properties was mainly because of shrinkage porosity reduction and resultant effective rare-earth (RE) elements homogenization and precipitation strengthening.展开更多

The type, morphology, size distribution and volume fraction of inclusion were analyzed with OM and SEM. The effect of inclusion in Mg-Gd-Y-Zr alloys on anticorrosion ability was investigated with salt spray test and electrochemical test. The results show that the inclusions in the alloy can be removed effectively by filtering purification. The average size of inclusions in the alloys is decreased from 12.7 μm to 2.0 μm and the volume fraction of inclusions is reduced from 0.30% to 0.04%. With the decrease of the size of inclusions in the alloys, the corrosion rate of the alloys decreases dramatically from 38.8 g/(m 2 ·d) to 2.4 g/(m 2 ·d) in the salt spray test. The corrosion potential increases while the corrosion current decreases and the polarization resistance increases in the electrochemical tests, which indicates that the anticorrosion ability is improved.展开更多

In the present work, a solute homogenization model is proposed based on the chemical short-range-order tendency in Mg-Gd- based alloys. After a calculation using the cluster-plus-glue-atom model, the stable Mg-Gd structural unit is derived, [Gd-Mg12 ]Mg6, where one solute Gd is nearest-neighbored with twelve Mg atoms to form the characteristic hcp cluster [Gd-Mg12 ] and this cluster is matched with six Mg glue atoms. Such a local unit is then mixed with [Mg-Mg12 ]Mg3, the stable unit for pure Mg. Assuming that the Gd-containing units are arranged in fcc- or bcc-like lattice points and the Mg units in their octahedral interstices, three proportions between the two units are obtained, 1:1, 2:3, and 1:3, which constitute three solute homogenization modes. The prevailing Mg-Gd-based alloys are consequently classified into three groups, respectively exemplified by GW103 K (Mg-10Gd-3Y-0.4Zr, wt%), GW83 K (Mg-SGd-3Y-0.4Zr), and GW63 K (Mg-6Gd- 3Y-0.4Zr). Mg-Gd-Y-Zr alloys were designed following the model (where Y and Zr were also added in substitution for Gd) and prepared by permanent-mould casting. According to their mechanical properties, the 1:3 alloy (Mg-5.9Gd-1.6Y-0.4Zr) shows the best comprehensive properties (ultimate tensile strength 305 MPa, yield strength 186 MPa, elongation 9.0%) in solution plus ageing state.2017 Published by Elsevier Ltd on behalf of The editorial office of Journal of Materials Science & Technology.展开更多

The corrosion potential increases while the corrosion current decreases and the polarization resistance increases in the electrochemical tests, which indicates that the anticorrosion ability is improved.

文摘High temperature deformation behavior and workability of Mg-8.1 Gd-4.5Y-0.3Zr alloy were studied by compression tests.Arrhenius equation with strain compensation and processing maps were established. The results show that the activation energy Q,structure factor a,n and In A varies with the strain, its relationship fit well by fifth order polynomial. The flow stresses predicted by the extracted model are in good agreement with the experimental results. There are five typical domains in the processing map,and the deformation mechanisms in different domains were determined by microstructure analysis. The feasible processing window of the alloy is in the areas of 400-500℃/0.001-0.1 s^(-1).
文摘Microstructure evolution and texture development and their effects on mechanical properties of a Mg-Gd-Y-Zr alloy during equal channel angular pressing(ECAP) were investigated. It is found that the microstructure is still inhomogeneous after four passes, and two zones, namely the fine grain zone(FGZ) and the coarse grain zone(CGZ) are formed. The grain refinement occurs mainly by particle-stimulated nucleation(PSN) mechanism, which led to a more random texture after four passes of ECAP.In the ECAP-processed alloy, the strength did not increase while the ductility was enhanced dramatically compared with the as-received condition. The change of ductility of this alloy was discussed in terms of texture and second phase particles.
文摘Magnesium alloys are used in aircraft because of their light weight. However, for these alloys to be applied in electronic devices, high thermal conductivities are required.Several high-potential compositions of Mg-Zn-Y-Zr alloys were selected by phase composition and their freezing ranges calculated using Thermo-Calc software. The alloys were prepared, and their fluidity, hot tearing susceptibility, mechanical properties, and thermal conductivity were obtained and compared. The alloy composed of Mg-4 wt%Zn-3 wt%Y-0.3 wt%Zr was selected for further investigation, because of its high thermal conductivity and satisfactory mechanical properties. The Mg-4 wt%Zn-3 wt%Y-0.3 wt%Zr alloy’s fluidity and hot tearing susceptibility were similar to those of the widespread AZ91 commercial casting magnesium alloy. The influence of a heat treatment regime on the microstructure, thermal conductivity, and mechanical properties of the developed alloy was also investigated. It was established that the room temperature thermal conductivity of the Mg-4 wt%Zn-3 wt%Y-0.3 wt%Zr alloy after aging at 300℃for 5 h was 105 W/m K^(-1).Additionally,the following tensile test results were obtained in aged condition:120 MPa yield strength,200 MPa ultimate tensile strength, and 4%elongation.The utilization of solid solution heat treatment at 520℃for 8 h prior to aging can promote up to 9%increase in elongation. The Mg-4 wt%Zn-3 wt%Y-0.3 wt%Zr casting alloy can be used as a high thermal conductivity material with industrial applications.

文摘Composition homogenization in solid solution is important for industrial alloys. According to their mechanical properties, the 1:3 alloy (Mg-5.9Gd-1.6Y-0.4Zr) shows the best comprehensive properties (ultimate tensile strength 305 MPa, yield strength 186 MPa, elongation 9.0%) in solution plus ageing state.2017 Published by Elsevier Ltd on behalf of The editorial office of Journal of Materials Science & Technology.
