Based on the reanalysis data of global 500hPa geopotential height (NCEP NCAR CDAS-1) and tropical Pacific SSTs, the characteristics of global subtropical highs and their response to tropical eastern Pacific SST are i...Based on the reanalysis data of global 500hPa geopotential height (NCEP NCAR CDAS-1) and tropical Pacific SSTs, the characteristics of global subtropical highs and their response to tropical eastern Pacific SST are investigated. Results show that global subtropical highs respond to SST consistently. Subtropical high intensity correlates to the 3 months leading SST maximally. The relationship between SST and 500hPa height stands out in low latitudes. The time for 500hPa height reaching maximuxn correlation to SST is 2 months later in latitude of 10 degree and 9 months in latitude of 30 degree than equatorial zone. And the response of atmospheric circulation over extratropic performs as wave train, and the response is more significant in the condition of warmer SST. Persistence of SSTs and subtropical highs changes obviously from season to season. Minimum persistence of subtropical highs in September and October may relate to the low persistence of SSTs in August and September.展开更多

Composite analysis of 500 hPa geopotential height field during different stages of ENSO reveals that in the winters of E1 Nifio (EN) years, there is significant negative anomaly of geopotential height in the three key regions. In the winters of La Nifia (LN) years, on the other hand, significant positive anomaly of geopotential height is observed in Eastern Ural, Baikal, and Okhotsk. In summer, Okhotsk exhibits positive anomaly, which is significant at a confidence level of 90% by Student's t-test during the developing stage of an LN year. In the developing stage of an EN year, geopotential height field at 500 hPa manifests positive (negative) anomaly in Baikal (Ural and Okhotsk), while the geopotential height field at 500 hPa exhibits positive (negative) anomaly in Ural and Okhotsk (Baikal) during the decaying stage of both EN and LN years. However, these abnormities are insignificant in a developing EN year, decaying EN year, and the summer of a decaying LN year. By analyzing 500 hPa geopotential height field during different phases of the ENSO cycle, it is observed that results of the case study are consistent with those of composite analysis. Annual average blocking is likewise examined during the different stages of ENSO from 1950 to 2008. Combined with composite analysis and case study, results indicate that blockings in the three key regions are suppressed (enhanced) during the winters of EN (LN) years. In summer, the influence of ENSO on the blockings in the three key regions is not as significant as that in winter. Evidently, developing LN may enhance blockings in Okhotsk. An enhanced Warm Arctic-Cold Eurasia(WACE)pattern has been a notable feature in recent winters of the Northern Hemisphere.However,divergent results between model and observational studies of the WACE still remain.This...An enhanced Warm Arctic-Cold Eurasia(WACE)pattern has been a notable feature in recent winters of the Northern Hemisphere.However,divergent results between model and observational studies of the WACE still remain.This study evaluates the performance of 39 climate models participating in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6(CMIP6)in simulating the WACE pattern in winter of 1980-2014 and explores the key factors causing the differences in the simulation capability among the models.The results show that the multimodel ensemble(MME)can better simulate the spatial distribution of the WACE pattern than most single models.Models that can/cannot simulate both the climatology and the standard deviation of the Eurasian winter surface air temperature well,especially the latter,usually can/cannot simulate the WACE pattern well.This mainly results from the different abilities of the models to simulate the range and intensity of the warm anomaly in the Barents Sea-Kara seas(BKS)region.Further analysis shows that a good performance of the models in the BKS area is usually related to their ability to simulate location and persistence of Ural blocking(UB),which can transport heat to the BKS region,causing the warm Arctic,and strengthen the westerly trough downstream,cooling central Eurasia.Therefore,simulation of UB is key and significantly affects the model’s performance in simulating the WACE.展开更多
Based on the daily Japanese 55-yr reanalysis data,this study analyzes the maintenance mechanism for 53 boreal winter blocking highs around the Ural Mountains(UBHs)during 1958-2018 based on the atmospheric energy budge...Based on the daily Japanese 55-yr reanalysis data,this study analyzes the maintenance mechanism for 53 boreal winter blocking highs around the Ural Mountains(UBHs)during 1958-2018 based on the atmospheric energy budget equations.After decomposing the circulation into background flow,low-frequency anomalies,and high-frequency eddies,it was found that the interaction between the background flow and low-frequency anomalies is conducive to the maintenance of the UBHs.Due to the southwestward gradient in the climatological mean air temperature over the Eurasian continent,it is easy for the air temperature anomalies as well as the wind velocity anomalies in the middle and lower troposphere induced by the UBHs to facilitate the positive conversion of baroclinic energy associated with the background flow into the UBHs.Likewise,the conversion of barotropic energy associated with the background flow is also evident in the upper troposphere,in which the climatological mean westerlies have evident southward gradient to the northwest of Lake Baikal and southwestward gradient over Barents Sea.Note that the conversion of baroclinic energy associated with the background flow is dominant throughout the lifecycle of UBHs,acting as the major contributor to the maintenance of the UBHs.Although transient eddies facilitate maintenance of the UBHs via positive conversion of barotropic energy in the middle and upper troposphere,they hinder the maintenance of UBHs via negative conversion of baroclinic energy in the lower troposphere.The diabatic heating anomalies tend to counteract the local air temperature anomalies in the middle and lower troposphere,which damps the available potential energy of UBHs and acts as a negative contributor to the UBHs.展开更多
