Although most irradiation tests have been related to national R&D relevant to nuclear power, demand for neutron irradiation of electro-magnetic materials is increasing rapidly at HANARO. Another research reactor, which is named the KIJANG research reactor (KJRR), is under construction in Korea. KJRR is dedicated to increasing the national radio-isotopes supply capacity and to the irradiation facilities including Neutron Transmutation Doping (NTD) facilities for power semiconductor production in a large scale and fast neutron irradiation (FNI) facility for fast neutron irradiation. The NTD and FNI facilities in the KJRR reactor can be effectively utilized on the study of separated effect of thermal and fast neutron irradiations on the properties of electro-magnetic materials. HANARO will also specialize more on irradiation research, including neutron irradiation of electronic materials. The research status and possibility of new electro-magnetic materials using neutron irradiation at HANARO are surveyed to ascertain the utilization of neutron irradiation technology in electro-magnetic material researches.展开更多

Since its initial criticality in Feb. 1995, it has worked as a national neutron source for neutron beam research, RI production and related research, material and fuel irradiation research, and neutron transmutation doping. The installation of a cold neutron source and related beam instrument makes HANARO serve as a regional source for beam research as well. As Korea is developing nuclear power systems and fuels, irradiation research is a main utilization subject in HANARO, and irradiation facilities have been actively utilized for various nuclear fuel and material irradiation tests requested by users from research institutes, universities, and industries. Most of the irradiation tests were related to the R & D relevant to the ageing management and safety evaluation of the present nuclear power reactors. Korea is conducting R & D programs relevant to new nuclear systems including a research reactor, System-integrated Modular Advanced Reactor (SMART), and future nuclear systems such as a very high temperature reactor system (VHTR) and sodium cooled fast reactor system (SFR). To effectively support the R&D for new nuclear systems, advanced irradiation technologies such as high-temperature irradiation, instrumentation, and long-term irradiation are being developed. In addition, research on the irradiation characteristics of super-conductor materials and new chemical materials is being conducted as a part of fundamental research.展开更多

From August 2013, the first irradiation testing of coated particle fuel was begun to demonstrate and qualify TRISO fuel for use in the VHTR in HANARO (high-flux advanced neutron application reactor) at KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute). This experiment is currently undergoing under an atmosphere of a mixed inert gas without on-line temperature monitoring and control combined with on-line fission product monitoring of the sweep gas. The irradiation device contains two test rods, one contains nine fuel compacts and the other five compacts and eight graphite specimens. Each compact has 263 coated particles. After a peak bum-up of about 4% and a peak fast neutron fluence of about 1.7 × 1021 n/cm2, PIE (post irradiation examination) will be carried out at KAERI's irradiated material examination facility. This paper describes the characteristics of coated particle fuels, and the design of the test rod and irradiation device for the coated particle fuels, and discusses the technical results of irradiation testing at HANARO.展开更多
