This package includes three independent detectors: HEPP-H, HEPP-L, and HEPP-X. HEPP-H and HEPP-L can detect energetic electrons from 100 keV to approximately 50 MeV and protons from 2 MeV to approximately 200 MeV. HEPP-X can measure solar X-rays in the energy range from 1 keV to approximately 20 keV. The objective of the HEPP payload was to provide a survey of energetic particles with high energy, pitch angle, and time resolutions in order to gain new insight into the space radiation environments of the near-Earth system. Particularly, the HEPP can provide new measurements of the magnetic storm related precipitation of electrons in the slot region, and the dynamics of radiation belts. In this paper, the HEPP scientific data sets are described and initial results are provided. The scientific data can show variations in the flux of energetic particles during magnetic storms.展开更多

Ion fluxes at 4-min temporal resolution derived from ENA data in the energy ranges 50-81 and 81-158 keV are compared with in situ particle fluxes measured by the LANL-SOPA instruments aboard LANL-01, LANL-02, LANL-97, and LANL-84 (a series of geostationary satellites that encircle the equatorial plane at -6.6 RE). Also, magnetic fields measured simultaneously by the magetometers aboard GOES-10 and GOES-12 (which are also geostationary satellites) are compared with the particle data. It is demonstrated that ion fluxes in the ring current were enhanced during geomagnetic field tailward stretching in the growth phases of substorms rather than after Earthward directed dipolarization events. This observation, which challenges the existing concept that ring current particles are injected Earthward from the magnetotail following dipolarization events, requires further investigation using a large number of magnetic storm events.展开更多

For the reversed magnetic shear(RS) H-mode scenario with an enhanced internal transport barrier(ITB), the αTAEs are trapped in the electron cyclotron(EC) power deposition region and the effects of different pedestals on αTAEs are analyzed. For the negative off-axis magnetic shear scenario, the αTAEs are discussed, and the effect of different magnetic shears on the α TAEs is presented. Finally, the effects of beam energies and pitch-angle distributions onαTAE stability are also presented.展开更多

The evaluation depends on both combustion heat and ignition temperature. Conventional non-metallic materials have low ignition temperature but small combustion heat, whereas metals have large combustion heat but high ignition temperatures. We show that many metallic glasses, combining the merits of both metals and non-metals, have large combustion heat, approximately twice that of the non-metals, and low ignition temperature that is several hundreds of Kelvin lower than that of the metals. The ease in igniting metallic glass results from the low thermal conductivity of the materials and the storage of energy in their liquid-like atomic structure. Metallic glass ribbons outweigh metallic nanoparticles due to their high production efficiency, low cost and nontoxicity. The findings suggest that metallic glasses are alternative energetic materials.展开更多
