The volcanic rocks consist mainly of andesitic to rhyolitic rocks and are traditionally mapped as Permian-Triassic sequences. Our zircon U-Pb geochronological results show that two andesitic samples (TL-1-B and TL-31-B), are representative of the Doi Yao volcanic zone, and give a mean weighted age of 241.2-+-4.6 Ma and 241.7-+-2.9 Ma, respectively. The rhyolitic sample (TL-32-B1) from the Doi Khun Ta Khuan volcanic zone erupted at 238.3+3.8 Ma. Such ages indicate that Chiang Khong volcanic rocks erputed during the early Middle Triassic period. Seven samples from the Doi Yao and Doi Khun Ta Khuan zones exhibit an affinity to arc volcanics. Three rhyolitic samples from the Chiang Khong area have a geochemical affinity to both arc and syn-eollisional volcanic rocks. The Chiang Khong arc volcanic rocks can be geochemically compared with those in the Lampang area in northern Thailand, also consistent with those in Jinghong area of southwestern Yunnan. This indicates that the Chiang Rai arc-volcanic zone might northwardly link to the Lancangjiang volcanic zone in southwestern China.展开更多

Analysis of DNA sequence data from the mitochondrial gene 16S, advertisement calls, and morphological distinctiveness support recognition of the new species. Matrilineal genealogy suggests that the new population from Chiang Mai is a sister taxon to the South Asian clade that includes F. syhadrensis, F. granosa, and F. pierreL The new species, Fejervarya chiangmaiensis sp. nov., differs morphologically from its congeners by its relatively small body size and proportions and the presence of dorsal warts and dermal ridges. Discovery of this new species indicates that the biodiversity of amphibians in this region remains underestimated.展开更多

However, it has been a matter of debate as to its southerly extension in NW Thailand(the Chiang Mai-Chiang Rai vs. Nan-Uttaradit zone). Our field investigation identified the high-iron basaltic rocks in the Chiang Dao Permian standard profile in NW Thailand. The high-iron rocks provide crucial records for understanding the controversy on the location of Paleotethyan main ocean in NW Thailand. The Early Permian high-iron samples show extremely high Fe Ot(20.96 wt.%–25.56 wt.%) and TiO2(6.07 wt.%–6.34 wt.%) and low SiO2(38.54 wt.%–43.46 wt.%) and Mg O(1.61 wt.%–2.40 wt.%) contents. Such characteristics are similar to those of the Fenner differentiation trend rarely observed in the natural system, distinct from those of the "normal" Bowen trend. Their chondrite- normalized REE and primitive mantle-normalized patterns are generally similar to those of typical OIB. The initial 87Sr/86 Sr ratios and εNd(t) values range from 0.704 677 to 0.705 103 and 3.16 to 3.48, respectively, falling near the field of typical OIB(oceanic-island basalt). These data synthetically suggest that the Chiang Dao high-iron rocks are the products of high-degree partial melting of peridotite with Fe-rich eclogitic blobs/streaks in response to a seamount setting. In comparison with the Permian tectonic setting in SW Yunnan and NW Thailand, it is inferred that the Paleotethyan Ocean was located between the Shan-Thai terrane of Sibumasu and Sukhothai arc along the Inthanon zone of the Chiang Mai-Chiang Rai rather than Nan-Uttaradit zones.展开更多

The Seven Gentlemen Incident occurred in the midst of the national crisis of Japanese aggression, when an independent patriotic movement led by seven Shanghai intellectuals organized the National Salvation Association and urged Chiang Kai-shek to fight the Japanese invaders. The Chiang regime, however, arrested the seven and accused them of plotting to overthrow the government. They were released only after Japan launched a full-scale attack on China in July 1937. Scholars have offered varying images of the incident. While the Seven Gentlemen were denounced as criminals by the Nationalists in Chinese Taiwan, they were respected as national heroes in Chinese mainland. Myths with conflicting viewpoints have been created. What were the life and career backgrounds of these people? Were they petty-bourgeoisie, as some mainlanders assume? Were the seven figures, as mainland Chinese claim, motivated under communist leadership to organize their association? What were their relations with the Nationalist regime and the Communist Party? This article endeavors to answer these questions based on new primary documents in particular archival material and offers new perspectives on this fascinating episode of modern China.展开更多

Both the local and national governments should have important roles in supporting the small and medium tourism enterprises by providing good public facilities, technical expertise and easy information access.

文摘The conversion of forests into agricultural lands is a major cause of deforestation, particularly in the mountain ecosystems of northern Thailand. It results in a rapid loss of biological diversity of both flora and fauna. In addition, the above-ground biomass(AGB),which can be a major source of carbon storage,is also decreased. This study aimed to predict the AGB in Doi Suthep-Pui National Park,Chiang Mai province, based on land-use/land cover(LULC)changes from 2000 to 2030.Landsat-5 TM(2000)and Landsat-8 TM(2015)satellite images were analyzed to predict LULC changes to 2030.Temporary plots(30 m 930 m)were established in each LULC type for AGB analysis;trees with diameters at breast height≥4.5 cm were identified and measured.AGB of all LULC types were analyzed based on specific allometric equations of each type. The results show that area of forest and nonforested areas fluctuated during the study period.Through the first 15 years(2000–2015),5%(2.9 km^2)of forest changed to either agriculture or urban lands, especially mixed deciduous forest and lower montane forest. There was a similar trend in the 2030 prediction, showing the effect of forest fragmentation and the resultant high number of patches.Total AGB tended to decrease over the 30-year period from 12.5 to 10.6 t ha^-1 in the first and second periods, respectively.Deforestation was the main factor influencing the loss of AGB(30.6 t ha^-1)related to LULC changes.Furthermore, habitat loss would be expected to result in decreased biological diversity.Consequently,a management plan should be developed to avoid unsustainable land use changes, which may adversely affect human well-being.
文摘The literature generally refers to Chiang Kai-shek and his son Chiang Ching-kuo as“authoritarian”leaders. This paper will argue that,in fact, they governed more like totalitarian dictators.Their tight control over every sector of Taiwan Residents society was not inferior to the dictatorial rule of the German Democratic Republic(GDR).Despite the tight control exercised by the GDR regime and the Chiangs, however,Protestant churches still managed to become shelters for dissidents in both East Germany and Taiwan. Also,in both localities, church buildings became gathering locations and church newsletters optimal channels for communications. Moreover, the dissidents that had kept hidden in East German churches eventually led the protests that overthrew the GDR’s communist regime.Similarly,in Taiwan dissidents from the Gikong Presbyterian Church became the oppositional leaders that facilitated the first democratic party rotation in Taiwan. This article explores why the above became possible by examining the following hypothesis:The oppressive policies of dictatorial regimes transform churches into breeding grounds for dissidents because of the alternative ideologies and values they provide. Moreover, the paper will show how civic movements can develop in churches even under authoritarian regimes.
