To reduce the high computational burden of ML method and make it more suitable to engineering applications, we apply the Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithm to maximize the likelihood function for DOA estimation. As a recently proposed bio-inspired computing algorithm, ABC algorithm is originally used to optimize multivariable functions by imitating the be- havior of bee colony finding excellent nectar sources in the nature environment. It offers an excellent alternative to the con- ventional methods in ML-DOA estimation. The performance of ABC-based ML and other popular meta-heuristic-based ML methods for DOA estimation are compared for various scenarios of convergence, Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR), and number of iterations. The computation loads of ABC-based ML and the conventional ML methods for DOA estimation are also investi- gated. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed ABC based method is more efficient in computation and statistical performance than other ML-based DOA estimation methods.展开更多

Their permeation properties including hydraulic permeability and diffusional permeability can be dramatically controlled or adjusted self-regulatively in response to small chemical and/or physical stimuli in their environments. Such environmental stimuli-responsive smart membranes could find myriad applications in numerous fields ranging from controlled release to separations. Here the trans-membrane mass-transfer and membrane separation is introduced as the beginning to initiate the requirement of smart membranes, and then bio-inspired design of environmental stimuli-responsive smart membranes and four essential elements for smart membranes are introduced and discussed. Next, smart membrane types and their applications as smart tools for controllable mass-transfer in controlled release and separations are reviewed. The research tooics in the near future are also suggested.展开更多

The dynamic mechanism of the robot was studied based on Watt-I planar linkages, and the movement trajectory of the double bar Assur Group was deduced to simulate the water-running foot trajectories of the basilisk lizard. A Central Pattern Generator (CPG)-based fuzzy control method was proposed to control the robot for realizing balance control and gait adjustment. The effectiveness of the proposed control method was verified on the prototype of a water running robot (weight: 320 g). When the biped robot is running on water, the average force generated by the propulsion mechanism is 1.3 N, and the robot body tilt angle is 5~. The experiment results show that the propulsion mechanism is effective in realizing the basilisk lizards-like water running patterns, and the CPG-based fuzzy control method is effective in keeping the balance of the robot.展开更多
