The effect of lime on the pre-desilication and digestion of gibbsitic bauxite in synthetic sodium aluminate liquor at different tem- peratures was investigated. The bauxite is comprised of gibbsite, aluminogoethite, hematite, kaolin, quartz, and minor boehmite. Lime in- creases the desilication efficiency of the bauxite during the pre-desilication process by promoting the conversion of sodalite and cancrinite to hydrogamet. Desilication reactions during the digestion process promoted by lime result in the loss of A1203 entering the red mud, but the amount of aluminogoethite-to-hematite conversion promoted by lime leads to the increase of aluminogoethific A1203 entering the digested liquor. The alumina digestion rate at 245~C is higher than that at 145 C due to the more pronounced conversion of aluminogoethite to hema- tite. The soda consumption during the digestion process decreases due to lime addition, especially at higher temperatures. 展开更多

The reductive Bayer digestion by using iron powder as reductant is proposed to convert hematite to magnetite and further to dissociate iron minerals from sodium aluminosilicate hydrate(desilication product,DSP)based on the differences of their surface properties.The results show that the differences of surface properties between magnetite and DSP in zeta potential,wettability and solvation trend facilitate magnetite to agglomerate,grow up and thus to dissociate from DSP.The increments of reductant amount and alkali concentration favor the transformation of hematite in digestion with the relative alumina recovery of98.91%.Processing the resultant red mud can obtain qualified iron concentrate with iron grade of approximate60%and recovery of about86%through magnetic separation,resulting in reduction of red mud emission higher than70%.The results are potential to develop a novel technology for processing high iron diasporic bauxite efficiently and provide references for comprehensive utilization of high iron red mud. 展开更多

To recycle residual iron efficiently in Bayer red mud, three-factor three-level orthogonal experiments on carbon-bearing pellets of Bayer red mud were conducted on the basis of their characteristics. The influences of CaO dosage, temperature and roast- ing time on total iron content and iron recovery of reduced iron powder were studied. Results showed that these factors slightly influenced iron recovery, but significantly influenced total iron content. The principal factor influencing total iron content was CaO dosage, followed by temperature and roasting time. An increase in CaO dosage could decrease total iron content, whereas an increase in temperature and an extension of roasting time could improve total iron content. The reduced iron powder with total iron content of 88.4 l% and iron recovery rate of 97.97% can be obtained under the optimal conditions of temperature of 1 275 ℃, roasting time of 60 min and CaO dosage of 7.5%. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses of the reduced pellets showed that iron minerals in red mud were almost completely reduced to metallic iron. The principal factor influencing the total iron content of reduced iron powder was the grain size of metallic iron particles. An increase in CaO dosage hindered the growth of metallic iron particles, whereas an increase in temperature and an extension of roasting time could neutralise the effect of CaO dosage. Therefore, CaO dosage should be decreased when iron minerals in red mud can be adequately reduced into metallic iron. 展开更多

Red mud is a bauxite residue generated during the process of alumina production. In this research, the occur- rence mode of scandium in the Bayer red mud was investi- gated mainly by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). The Bayer red mud used in this work is composed of 21.47 wt% hematite, 12.13 wt% goethite, 8.86 wt% gibbsite, 5.02 wt% perovskite, 9.70 wt% quartz, 3.23 wt% anhydrite, 29.92 wt% Na_2Al_2Si_5O_14 and 9.67 wt% Al_3Fe_5O_12. Besides, the scandium content in the Bayer red mud is 84.32 × 10-6, indicating that this Bayer red mud is an important scandium resource deserving exploitation. The EPMA results show that the scandium within the Bayer red mud is mainly occurring in the iron minerals of hematite and goethite with the isomorphism form, but its distribution is not homogeneous in these iron minerals with the Sc_2O_3 content between 330 × 10-6 and 2040 × 10-6. This study provides a theoretical base for the further experimental work on the scandium extraction from this Bayer red mud. 展开更多

The liquor concentration, mineral proportion, crystal parameters and micro morphology of various desilication products(DSPs) precipitated in silica-supersaturated sodium aluminate solution at 95 ℃ under different reaction conditions were systematically researched. The DSPs formed under atmospheric pressure comprise amorphous phase, zeolite A, zeolite and sodalite, and the DSPs concentration and crystallinity increase with the increase of initial silica concentration, initial molar ratio of caustic Na2O to Al2O3(αK) and desilication duration. Decreasing the initial silica concentration, initial αK and increasing the desilication duration can reduce the proportion of zeolite A. The zeolite and sodalite are the stable DSPs, while the precipitation of zeolite A occurs at a high silica-supersaturated state in sodium aluminate solution. The DSPs are precipitated in the form of agglomerates, but the morphologies of various DSPs are quite different. Both the molar ratios of Na2O to Al2O3 and SiO-2 to Al2O3 in DSPs increase with the increasing desilication duration, resulting in the increase of the cell volumes of various DSPs. The precipitation sequence of DSPs under atmospheric pressure is: amorphous phase→zeolite A→zeolite→sodalite. 展开更多

The absorbent composing of Bayer red mud and water was prepared and applied to removing SO2 from flue gas.Effects of the ratio of liquid to solid(L/S),the absorption temperature,the inlet SO2 concentration,the O2 concentration,SO4^2-and other different components of Bayer red mud on desulfurization were conducted.The mechanism of flue gas desulfurization was also established.The results indicated that L/S was the prominent factor,followed by the inlet SO2 concentration and the temperature was the least among them.The optimum condition was as follows:L/S,the temperature and the SO2 concentration were 20:1,25℃and 1000 mg/m^3,respectively,under the gas flow of 1.5 L/min.The desulfurization efficiency was not significantly influenced when O2 concentration was above 7%.The accumulation of SO4^2-inhibited the desulfurization efficiency.The alkali absorption and metal ions liquid catalytic oxidation were involved in the process,which accounted for 98.61%. 展开更多

A new chemical pre-desilication process of kaolinite in diasporic bauxite in alkali solution at atmospheric pressure was proposed.The dissolution kinetics and mechanism were studied by chemical analysis,XRD and SEM.The kinetic results of dissolution process show that the kaolinite is symbiotic with diaspore but without cladding.The dissolution ratio of kaolinite is close to 100%at 100℃for 90 min.The dissolution kinetic equation is 1-(1-α)^1/3=7.88×10^6 exp[-64434/(RT)]t.With the low L/S(L/S=10:1),the dissolution ratio of kaolinite decreases to 55%.This is due to the formation of lamellar hydroxyl-sodalite(OH-SOD)which is deposited on the surface of kaolinite and hinders the further dissolution of kaolinite.Under the optimum conditions,the A/S(mass ratio of Al2 O3 to SiO2)of dissolved residues is increased to 8.55,while the A/S of the bauxite is only 4.97. 展开更多

The formation kinetics and mechanism of tricalcium aluminate hydrate and calcium oxalate in dilute sodium aluminate solution and sodium oxalate solution were studied respectively based on the lime causticization, and the optimal conditions for removing the oxalate in dilute sodium aluminate solution as well as the mechanism were finally obtained.The formation processes of tricalcium aluminate hydrate and calcium oxalate are mainly controlled by the chemical reaction and the inner diffusion respectively,and the corresponding reaction rate equations as well as the apparent activation energy were calculated. The hydrocalumite with a spatially interleaved structure will form in dilute sodium aluminate solution with sodium oxalate, greatly removing the oxalate impurity by absorption. Calcium oxalate can be converted to tricalcium aluminate hydrate with the increasing reaction time.
