In the conventional motion compensated frame interpolation scheme, all blocks adopt the same side-information generation method regardless of the motion intensity inequality at different regions. In this paper, an improved method is proposed. The image blocks are classified into two modes, fast motion and slow motion, by simply computing the discrete cosine transformation(DCT) coefficients at the encoder. On the decoder, it chooses the direct interpolation and refined motion compensated interpolation correspondingly to generate side information. Experimental results show that the proposed method, without increasing the encoder complexity, can increase the average peak signal-to-noise ratio(PSNR) by up to 1~ 2 dB compared with the existing algorithm. Meanwhile, the proposed algorithm significantly improves the subjective quality of the side information.展开更多

Solving the fluence map optimization (FMO) problem while satisfying DVCs often requires a tedious trial-and-error for selecting appropriate dose control parameters on various organs. In this paper, we propose an iterative approach to satisfy DVCs using a multi-objective linear programming (LP) model for solving beamlet intensities. This algorithm, starting from arbitrary initial parameter values, gradually updates the values through an iterative solution process toward optimal solution. This method finds appropriate parameter values through the trade-off between OAR sparing and target coverage to improve the solution. We compared the plan quality and the satisfaction of the DVCs by the proposed algorithm with two nonlinear approaches: a nonlinear FMO model solved by using the L-BFGS algorithm and another approach solved by a commercial treatment planning system (Eclipse 8.9). We retrospectively selected from our institutional database five patients with lung cancer and one patient with prostate cancer for this study. Numerical results show that our approach successfully improved target coverage to meet the DVCs, while trying to keep corresponding OAR DVCs satisfied. The LBFGS algorithm for solving the nonlinear FMO model successfully satisfied the DVCs in three out of five test cases. However, there is no recourse in the nonlinear FMO model for correcting unsatisfied DVCs other than manually changing some parameter values through trial and error to derive a solution that more closely meets the DVC requirements. The LP-based heuristic algorithm outperformed the current treatment planning system in terms of DVC satisfaction. A major strength of the LP-based heuristic approach is that it is not sensitive to the starting condition.展开更多

In Wyner-Ziv residual coding of video, the residual of a frame with respect to a reference frame is Wyner-Ziv encoded, which can reduces the input entropy and leads to a higher coding efficiency than directly encoding the original frame. In this paper, we propose a new approach of residual coding combined with Region Of Interest (ROI) extraction. Experimental results show that, the proposed scheme achieves better rate-distortion performance compared to conventional Wyner-Ziv coding scheme.展开更多

This paper proposes an SI refinement algorithm, in which the Wyner-Ziv (WZ) frame is split into two parts based on checkerboard pattern, and the two parts are encoded independently but decoded sequentially. In the decoding process, the part 1 is first decoded with the initial SI and partially decoded part (PDP) 1 is used to improve the motion vectors (MVs) and SI of both parts. At the next stage, the part 2 is decoded with the improved SI and PDP 2 is used to further refine MVs of the part 2. Then, SI of both parts are further refined. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can improve the peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) by up to 1.43 dB when compared with traditional DVC codec.展开更多
