Such interactions tend to feature a dilemma in which both the autonomy and sociality of art are involved, turning out to be a kind of contradictive but dynamic tension. All this seems conducive to the value or end of art in an ontological sense. With a particular reference to T.W.Adorno’s negative dialectics, this paper looks into the relationship between art and society in view of ontology, epistemology, aesthetic psychology, aesthetic culture and sociology respectively. It argues that the role of art in contemporary society can be significantly affective and cognitive so long as artworks are able to perform such virtues as critical spirit, truth content and aesthetic shudder in an artistically subtle and expressive mode.展开更多
