It is aim ed at“ activeinheritance”, focusing on construction of system s and environm ents, which differsfrom saving in a general sense or static inheritance as it was in the past.U nder the“ Ethnic Tradition Project”, the V illage Culture Inheriting Program m e wasofficially inaugurated in O ctober 2004. It first started in a village of Pum i ethnicgroup in Lanping County, N ujiang Prefecture, Yunnan Province, with positive resultsin saving the local ethnic root culture and encouraging youth to learn it. The Pro-gram m e, growing from the experience of the first experim ental site, has helped to es-tablish four“ V illage Culture Inheriting Sites”for the Pum i ethnic people. In each ofthe different villages there is one “ Culture Inheriting Showroom ”and“ LearningG roup”, which is engaged in discovering, restoring and inheriting the traditional cul-ture and folk art in their own villages. O n the other hand, eight Pum i village girlsform ed the “ Pum i Traditional Culture Learning G roup”, and after three years’prac-tice, their traditional skills have been recognized by their villagers, and have beenon display in Shangri-La, W eixi, Lijiang, Dali, Sim ao, Pu’er and W ashan.Theseyoung girls at the age of 20or so can now m aster the root culture of their own eth-nic group, which inspires our thoughts on the issue of inheriting ethnic cultures.Todate, under the influence of the Program m e’s conception, Lam a V illage of Bai eth-nic group in Lanping County as well as several other m inority-populated villages inother regions of Yunan have started their own inheritance tasks.The“ Ethnic Tradition Project”intends to actively inherit cultural traditions to preserveethnic expressions.
