The contents of fertility desire include ideal number ...This paper compared fertility desire of the migrated and never migrated women in rural China, based on the survey data from 4 counties in Anhui and Sichuan, 2000. The contents of fertility desire include ideal number of children and sex preference. The influence of individual characteristics and migration experience to fertility desire are also analyzed. Results of this study show that the desired number of children of ever migrated women is significantly less than that of never migrated women. The influence is less significant if the women have returned home for a longer period. There is no significant difference among ever migrated women, regardless of the difference in migration experience.展开更多
According to relevant international instruments,violence against women violates women’s human rights.Theoretically,there is no universal definition of the concept of “domestic violence”.Facts prove,however,that a b...According to relevant international instruments,violence against women violates women’s human rights.Theoretically,there is no universal definition of the concept of “domestic violence”.Facts prove,however,that a broader definition is necessary so to cover different experience of survivors of domestic violence,and is useful and effective to prevent violence against women.With regard to theoretical exploration of causes of domestic violence,there are many diversified perspectives.It is worth to note that feminist research in this field has not only provided us with a theoretical framework for further analysis of causes of domestic violence,but also supplied a deconstruction approach for understanding social,cultural and legal responses that to a great extent,have perpetuated the occurrence of domestic violence.In respect of strategies combating domestic violence,there are mainly two strategies:one involves human rights strategy,the other,legal reform strategy.The two have their respective advantages and disadvantages.We should explore the possibility of a combined approach so to work for provision,protection,prosecution and prevention of crime of domestic violence.展开更多
Scholars in contemporary China have been engaged in research on women since mid 1980s.The term “women’s studies” has been translated into Chinese since 1982 and many associations of women’s studies have been forme...Scholars in contemporary China have been engaged in research on women since mid 1980s.The term “women’s studies” has been translated into Chinese since 1982 and many associations of women’s studies have been formed since than.However,the lasting interest in research on women has neither resulted in curriculum transformation in higher education in China,nor created gender studies as a legitimate academic field.This article presents an analysis of the factors that have affected the development of gender studies in China.The author examines the conservative trend in the Chinese academic mainstream in the reform era,and analyzes male intellectuals’ role in reproducing and consolidating gender hierarchy as a response or reaction to political,economic and gender policies of the Mao era.The article also discusses the necessity and feasibility of creating women and gender studies in higher education in China.展开更多
