The existing state and partitioning of rare earth (RE) on weathered ores in Longnan County(LN), Xingfeng County(XF) and Ninghua County(NH) were characterized systematically by standard geological analytical methods. It is found that RE in the weathered rare earth ores exist as four phases: (a) water soluble, (b) ion-exchangeable, (c) colloidal sediment (oxides), (d) minerals, in which mainly as ion exchangeable phase, accounting for nearly 80% of total RE, with about 20% in the form of colloid sediment phase and mineral phase, but very little as aqueous soluble phase. These rare earth partitioning were mainly chosen mid-heavy RE elements, occupying above 60%, but not equal in the four phases. The mid-heavy RE elements were primarily enriched in the ion exchangeable phase up to 40%, while the containment of cerium dioxide is below 2 %. The cerium deficiency occurs in the ion exchangeable phase in weathered ore. It results from that the Ce^3+ is oxidized into Ce^4+ and changes into CeO2. For LN ore, the containment of Y is high in weathered ore because Y-minerals are abundant in original rock. 展开更多

In order to intensify the leaching process of rare earth(RE) and reduce the impurities in the leachate, ammonium chloride(NH4Cl) and ammonium nitrate(NH4NO3) were mixed as a compound leaching agent to treat the weathered crust elution-deposited RE ore. Effects of molar ratio of NH~+_4Cl and NH_4NO_3, ammonium(NH_4) concentration, leaching agent pH and flow rate on the leaching process of RE were studied and evaluated by the chromatographic plate theory. Leaching process of the main impurity aluminium(Al) was also discussed in detail. Results showed that a higher initial ammonium concentration in a certain range could enhance the mass transfer process of RE and Al by providing a driving force to overcome the resistance of diffusion. pH almost had no effects on the mass transfer efficiency of RE and Al in the range of 4 to 8. The relationship between the flow rate and height equivalent to a theoretical plate(HETP) could fit well with the Van Deemter equation, and the flow rate at the lowest HETP was determined. The optimum conditions of column leaching for RE and Al were 1:1(molar ratio) of NH_4Cl and NH_4NO_3, 0.2 mol/L of ammonium concentration, pH 4–8 of leaching agent and 0.5 mL /min of flow rate. Under this condition, the mass transfer efficiency of RE was improved, but no change was observed for Al compared with the most widely used ammonium sulfate. Moreover, the significant difference value(around 20 mL) of retention volume at the peak concentration between RE and Al provided a possibility for their separation. It suggested the potential application of the novel compound leaching agent(NH_4Cl/NH_4NO_3). It was found that the relative concentration of RE in the leachate could be easily obtained by monitoring the pH of leachate. 展开更多

In order to strengthen the leaching procedure, the chemical processes of leaching rare earths (RE) from the weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth ore were investigated frow the viewpoints of kinetics, hydrodynamic and mass transfer. The results show that the leaching hydrodynamics follows the Darcy law.The leaching kinetics can be described by the shrinking core model;the leaching process is controlled by diffusion of porous solid layer;and the mass transfer can be described with Van Deemter equation. This provides a theoretic basis and a scientific approach with high efficiency and optimized extraction conditions in industrial practice. 展开更多

In order to reveal the permeability rule of leaching agent solution and the effects of anions in the leaching process of weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth(RE) ores, the effects of ammonium concentration, temperature, particle size and porosity on the permeability were discussed in detail with(NH4)2SO4, NH4Cl and NH4NO3 as the leaching agent. It was found that the permeation velocity of ammonium salts increased linearly with the increase of hydraulic gradient. The seepage of ammonium salts solution in the RE ores followed Darcy’s law and displayed a laminar flow. The properties of the leaching agent solution and RE ores were the main factors that affect the permeability of RE ores. With the decrease of ammonium concentration and increase of temperature, the viscosity of solution decreased and the permeability coefficients of RE ores increased. And the effects of temperature on the viscosity and permeability were larger than ammonium concentration. The permeability of RE ores became worse with the decrease of particle size and porosity, and the particle size played a more important role compared with porosity. The permeability coefficient of RE ores increased and the viscosity of ammonium salts solution decreased in the order of(NH4)2SO4, NH4Cl and NH4NO3, implying that the penetrating power of anions increased in the order of SO42-, Cl- and NO3-. The results may play a vital role in improving the permeability of weathered crust elution-deposited RE ores. 展开更多

We report for the first time the geochemistry of rare earth elements(REE) in the weathered crusts of I-type and calc-alkaline to high-K(shoshonitic) granitic rocks at Mamasa and Palu region, Sulawesi Island, Indonesia. The weathered crusts can be divided into horizon A(lateritic profile) and B(weathered horizon). Quartz, albite, kaolinite, halloysite and montmorrilonite prevail in the weathered crust. Both weathered profiles show that the total REE increased from the parent rocks to the horizon B but significantly decrease toward the upper part(horizon A). LREE are enriched toward the upper part of the profile as shown by La/YbN value. However, HREE concentrations are high in horizon B1 in Palu profile. The total REE content of the weathered crust are relatively elevated compared to the parent rocks, particularly in the lower part of horizon B in Mamasa profile and in horizon B2 in Palu profile. This suggests that REE-bearing accessory minerals may be resistant against weathering and may remain as residual phase in the weathered crusts. The normalized isocon diagram shows that the mass balance of major and REE components between each horizon in Mamasa and Palu weathering profile are different. The positive Ce anomaly in the horizon A of Mamasa profile indicated that Ce is rapidly precipitated during weathering and retain at the upper soil horizon. 展开更多

The effect of hydrated radius, cation valence, pH and solution concentration on the zeta potential of clay minerals was investigated, and the relation between zeta potential of clay minerals and swelling was discussed in different leaching agents as well. The results show that the zeta potential of clay minerals decreases with the hydrated ionic radius increasing. It could be seen that the zeta potential of the clay minerals in AICl3 solution is positive, whereas that in NH4C1, KCl and MgCl2 solution is negative. And the zeta potential of clay minerals increases with the cation valence increasing. Moreover, the zeta potential of clay minerals decreases with the solution pH increasing, whereas that increases with the solution concentration increasing in different ammonium solutions. In addition, the swelling of clay minerals decreases while the zeta potential of clay minerals increasing in different ammonium solutions. The ability of compound ammonium to inhibit the swelling of clay minerals is lower than that of single ammonium solution. 展开更多

In order to better understand the leaching process of rare earth (RE) and aluminum (Al) from the weathered crust elutiondepositedRE ore, the mass transfer of RE and Al in column leaching was investigated using the chromatographic plate theory. There is an optimum flow rate that makes the highest mass transfer efficiency. The optimum leaching condition of RE is the leaching agent pH of 4?8, ammonium concentration of 0.4 mol/L and flow rate of0.5 mL/min. One of the major challenges during subsea tunnel construction is to seal the potential water inflow. Thepaper presents a case study of Xiang'an subsea tunnel in Xiamen, the first subsea tunnel in China. Duringits construction, different grades of weathered geomaterials were encountered, which was the challengingissue for this project. To deal with these unfavorable geological conditions, grouting was adoptedas an important measure for ground treatment. The grouting mechanism is first illustrated by introducinga typical grouting process. Then the site-specific grouting techniques employed in the Xiang'ansubsea tunnel are elaborated. By using this ground reinforcement technique, the tunneling safety of theXiang'an subsea tunnel was guaranteed. 2014 Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. A drilling process monitor (DPM) for ground characterization of weathered granite is presented. The monitor is portable and can be mounted on a hydraulic rotary drilling rig to record various drilling parameters in real time during normal subsurface investigation. The identification method for dominative and subsidiary interfaces has been established. The study reveals that the monitored drilling parameters are dependent on geotechnical materials and can be further applied to characterize ground interfaces. The t-test between manual logging and DPM logging has been carried out. The results show that the DPM has high accuracy in interfaces detection and well agreement with the manual logging. The findings show that the device and data analysis method are of potential application in subsurface drilling exploration in weathered granites. It also seems to have prospective uses in the determination of orebody boundary as well as in the detection of geohazards. 展开更多

The ion exchange model of the leaching process was determined via batch leaching experiments using the Kerr model, with the selectivity coefficient experimentally determined to be 12.59×10^-10 L^2/g^2. Solute transport laws of ammonium ions (NH4 +) and rare earth ions (RE^3+) in column leaching were described by the convection-dispersion equation (CDE). The source and sink in the CDE were determined by the Kerr model. The CDE with strong nonlinearity was solved using the sequential non-iterative method. Compared with the breakthrough curve of RE^3+, the correlation coefficient between the simulated and experimental curves reached 0.8724. Therefore, this method can simulate the one-dimensional column leaching of weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth ore. Moreover, the effects of different concentrations of ammonium sulfate ((NH4)2SO4) solution on the leaching rate of rare earth were analyzed. The optimal concentration of the (NH4)2SO4 solution had a linear relationship with the rare earth grade. 展开更多

The properties of rare earth partitioning in Chinese industrial rare earth ores were analyzed. Rare earth ores can be divided into the single-mineral type ore with bastnaesite, the multi-mineral type ore with bastnaesite and monazite, and the weathering crust type. Both the Bayan Obo rate earth ore and the Zhushan rate earth ore are a kind of mixed ore, consisting of basmaesite and monazite. Their rate earth partifionings are strongly enriched in light rate earths, where CeO2 is 50% and the light rate earth partitioning is totally over 95%. The Mianning rate earth ore as well as the Weishan rate earth is a kind of rate earth ore only having basmaesite. Their rare earth partitionings are also strongly enriched in light rate earths, in which CeO2 is 47% and the light rare earth partitioning is totally over 94%. For the weathering crust type rate earth ore, there are the Longnan rare earth ore, the Xunwu rare earth ore, and the middle yttrium and rich europium ore. In the Longnan rate earth ore, which is strongly enriched in heavy rate earths, Y2O3 is 64.83%, and the heavy and light rate earth partitionings are 89.40% and 10.53%, respectively. In the Xunwu rate earth ore, which is strongly enriched in light rate earths, CeO2 is 47.16%, and the light rate earth partitioning is totally 93.25%. Y and Eu are enriched in the middle yttrium and rich europium ore. Its middle rare earth partitioning is totally over 10%, and Eu2O3 and Y2O3 are over 0.5% and 20%, respectively, which are mainly industrial resources of the middle and the heavy rare earths. 展开更多

This present study focused on investigating the content and relative enrichment multiple of rare earth elements(REEs) in different terrain of weathered ore body, and the value of light rare earth elements/middle and heavy rare earth elements(LREEs/HREEs), in order to understand the mobilization and redistribution of HREEs, Furthermore, the abrasion pH was investigated as well, The results show that the average contents of HREEs in the knap, ridge and col are 37.26, 61.71, and 271.3 μg/g, respectively. The value of LREEs/HREEs is decreased from 16.78 to 7.914 between knap and col and the relative enrichment multiple of HREEs is as follows: CCol-HREEs 〉 CRidge-HREEs 〉 0. It is indicated the HREEs is concentrated in the col and the enrichment degree of HREEs is stronger than the ridge and the knap. Rare earth elements fractionation is exhibited in the different terrain of weathered ore body. Based on this study, the finding that HREEs concentrate in the lower terrain of weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth ores, such as in the col, would become a marker or indicator to search for middle and heavy rare earth enriched zone. 展开更多

Warm and humid climate and gentle hilly topography have provided favourable conditions for the devel-opment of the weathering crust of the granite intrusions in the Longnan area, Jiangxi Province. REE is mostlyconcentrated in an adsorption state in clay in the wholly weathered zone. The rare-earth minerals enriched inthe parent rocks provided the source material for the REE enrichment. Exchangeable REE accounts for48-86%. Extraction experiments and stable isotopic study of clay minerals suggest that the downward infiltra-tion of meteoric water and increasing gradient of pH values have played an important role in the enrichment ofREE during the progressive weathering. Slight fractionation of individual REE can not change their distribu-tion patterns in the profiles. which are inherited from the parent rocks. 展开更多

Rainfall intensity and slope gradient are two of the most important factors affecting the variations of runoff nitrogen(N).However, the effects of slope gradient and rainfall intensity on N loss via surface flow and interflow on weathered granite slopes are poorly understood. In this study,12 artificial rainfalls(three rainfall intensities and four slope gradients)were simulated to investigate the coupling loss characteristics of surface flow–interflow–total nitrogen(TN),nitrate nitrogen(NO_3^--N)and ammonia nitrogen(NH_4^+-N)on weathered granite slopes. The results show that slope gradient has a greater impact on the surface flow when the rainfall intensity is relatively large. The effect gradually weakens with the decrement of rainfall intensity. The interflow yield increases firstly with the prolongation of rainfall duration, then tends to be stable and finally decreases. The total surface flow percentage increases with rainfall intensity while it decreases with increasing slope gradient with a range of 10.88%-71.47%.The TN loss concentration of the surface flow continually decreases with rainfall duration while that of the interflow shows different fluctuations. However, the TN loss loads of both surface flow and interflow increase with increasing rainfall intensity and slope gradient. The NO_3^--N concentration of interflow is much higher than that of the surface flow. The NH_4^+-N concentration is always less than that of NO_3^--N with no significant difference between surface flow and interflow. The percentages of the TN,NO_3^--N,and NH_4^+-N total loss load and concentration of surface flow and interflow were analyzed. The results show that N loss via both surface flow and interflow occurs mainly in the form of NO_3^--N.Most of the N loss is caused by interflow which is the preferential path of runoff nutrient loss. These findings provide data support and underlying insights for the control of runoff and N loss on the weathered granite slopes. 展开更多

Weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth ores(WREOs)in China are the main source of medium and heavy rare earths in the world. In order to improve the seepage and the mass transfer of traditional ammonium salt leaching process of WREOs,surfactants were added in the ammonium sulfate leaching solution and the ammonium chloride leaching solution. The leaching kinetics, the mass transfer process, and the adhesion work reduction factor calculated from the interfacial properties were studied to reveal the strengthening mechanism of surfactant. In the presence of the tested five surfactants, cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide(CTAB),dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide(DTAB),sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS),sodium oleate and oleic acid, the permeability of WREOs is improved, the rare earth(RE)leaching efficiency increase and the impurity aluminum(Al)leaching efficiency decrease, indicating its promotional effect on the leaching process of WREOs.Furthermore,CTAB shows a better leaching enhancement, and the optimal addition dosage is 0.4 g/L for the two ammonium salt leaching agent systems. The kinetics analysis shows the internal diffusion controls model of RE and Al leaching process, and the leaching kinetics equations of RE and Al related to CTAB concentration were obtained for the two ammonium salt leaching systems.According to the chromatographic plate theory, the mass transfer efficiency of RE increases with the CTAB concentration increasing until 0.4 g/L,which confirms that the optimal CTAB addition is 0.4 g/L.Smaller adhesion work and adhesion work reduction factor indicate more favorable permeation as well as the leaching process. 展开更多

Weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth ore is an important resource of rare earths, including grantic weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth ore and volcanic weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth ore. The development condition of the weathered crust, weathering degree and mineral composition of these ores will be different because of the differences between their parent rocks and weathered crust causes of mineralogy path. Therefore, mineral properties and leaching characteristics of volcanic weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth ore from Chongzuo(CZ), Guangxi province were investigated. It was found that the CZ rare earth ore was a typical mid-yttrium and rich-europium ore, with the overall rare earth(REE) grade in ion-exchangeable phase of 0.15%. Partide size classification showed that finer particle had a higher REE grade. Column leaching tests showed that the leaching efficiency of REE was above 94% with leaching agent concentration of 0.20 mol/L, liquid-solid ratio of 4:3, flow rate of 0.60 mL/min, and initial pH value around 5.67. Compared to ammonium sulfate leaching, magnesium sulfate leaching was advantaged by nearly zero ammonia nitrogen emission while their REE leaching was almost equivalent. 展开更多

Aluminum, the main impurity in the lixivium of weathered crust elution deposited rare earth ore,not only results in an increasing consumption of precipitant in the rare earth precipitation process, but also lowers the purity of final rare earth product.Aluminum in the weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth ore lixivium should be removed.Neutralizing hydrolysis method was employed to remove aluminum from the lixivium.Hexamethylenetetramine was found to be the optimum pH regulator for the removal of aluminum in the low concentration. When used to adjust the pH value of the lixivium to 5.0,aluminum in the lixivium can be effectively removed in the form of aluminum hydroxide precipitation with removal rate of 97.60%.It shows that hexamethylenetetramine has a good effect on the removing of aluminum ions from the lowconcentration lixivium. Moreover, hexamethylenetetramine in removing aluminum from lixivium has little adverse effect on the RE precipitation process. 展开更多

Aggregation and structure play key roles in water-holding capacity and stability of soils. In this study, the incorporation of carbon(C) from switchgrass biochar into stable aggregate size fractions was assessed in an Aridisol(from Colorado,USA) dominated by 2:1 clays and an Alfisol(from Virginia,USA) containing weathered mixed 1:1 and 2:1 mineralogy,to evaluate the effect of biochar addition on soil characteristics. The biochar was applied at 4 levels,0,25,50,and 100 g kg^(-1),to the soils grown with wheat in a growth chamber experiment. The changes in soil strength and water-holding capacity using water release curves were measured. In the Colorado soil, the proportion of soil occurring in large aggregates decreased, with concomitant increases in small size fractions. No changes in aggregate size fractions occurred in the Virginia soil.In the Colorado soil,C content increased from 3.3 to 16.8 g kg^(-1),whereas in the<53 μm fraction C content increased from 5.7 to 22.6 g kg^(-1) with 100 g kg^(-1)biochar addition. In the Virginia soil,C content within aggregate size fractions increased for each size fraction, except the>2 000 μm fraction. The greatest increase(from 6.2 to 22.0 g kg^(-1)) occurred in the 53–250 μm fraction. The results indicated that C was incorporated into larger aggregates in the Virginia soil, but remained largely unassociated to soil particles in the Colorado soil.Biochar addition had no significant effect on water-holding capacity or strength measurements.Adding biochar to more weathered soils with high native soil organic content may result in greater stabilization of incorporated C and result in less loss because of erosion and transport, compared with the soils dominated by 2:1 clays and low native soil organic content. 展开更多

The micaceous weathered granitic soil(WGS)is frequently encountered in civil engineering worldwide, unfortunately little information is available regarding how mica affects the physico-mechanical behaviors of WGS.This study prepares reconstituted WGS with different mica contents by removing natural mica in theWGS,and then mixes it with commercial mica powders. The geotechnical behavior as well as the microstructures of the mixtures are characterized. The addition of mica enables the physical indices of WGS to be specific combinations of coarser gradation and high permeability but high Atterberg limits. However, high mica content in WGS was found to be associated with undesirable mechanical properties, including increased compressibility, disintegration, and swelling potential,as well as poor compactability and low effective frictional angle.Microstructural analysis indicates that the influence of mica on the responses of mixtures originates from the intrinsic nature of mica as well as the particle packing being formed withinWGS.Mica exists in the mixture as stacks of plates that form a spongy structure with high compressibility and swelling potential.Pores among the plates give the soil high water retention and high Atterberg limits.Large pores are also generated by soil particles with bridging packing, which enhances the permeability and water-soil interactions upon immersion. This study provides a microlevel understanding of how mica dominates the behavior of WGS and provides new insights into the effective stabilization and improvement of micaceous soils. 展开更多
